The whole French Mistake sequence in Blazing Saddles is a bit cringey today but in 1974 was definitely more "acceptable" then.

Dom DeLuise yelling “Wash this, f#$&@t” in History of the World is another example I remember. Back then, it was pretty standard to laugh at the stereotype portrayals of gay men and (less frequently) women. Mel was damning racism and anti semitism with one hand while dehumanizing homosexuals with the other. I admit to being conflicted about pointing it out since I love his earlier movies. But I feel like it’s necessary to recognize such things and at least say “that’s not how things are”. Also, I can’t very well virtue signal without doing so, can I!?

In light of tonight's "Beaver Moon" we watched Hundreds of Beavers. Delightfully creative with many LOL moments, but it felt like they stretched the midgame to make it a feature film. I'm going to ding it for being overlong and award 7/8 tentacles.

Yeah, it’s incredibly imaginative. I put my take on it in the tv version of this topic by accident. Now I need to watch The Lake Michigan Monster from the same group.

That last 30 minutes is comedy gold.

I just watched Infinite with Mark Walberg. It was entertaining but this is the first one I've thought maybe be is getting to old for action movies. That's weird. Need to go look up his age.

If anyone needs an uplifting movie, I heartily recommend a Street Cat Named Bob. A struggling musician and recovering drug addict befriends a ginger cat and the two form a lifelong friendship. He finds he makes more money with the cat on his shoulder while busking.

The latest Alien movie, Romulus, made it to Hulu so I gave it a shot. It's...adequate. Just a straight-up action monster movie with omnipresent flashing colored lights and darkness, ample smoke and fog, water everywhere, and a swooping shaky camera. I was moderately entertained but don't think it added much to the franchise apart from

My wife made me watch the Netflix Hallmark Christmas movie Hot Frosty. A snow sculpture of a hot young guy comes to life with a magic scarf and starts a relationship with a struggling widower in a small town. I'm not worried about spoilers; every one of you already knows exactly how this movie goes.

It was harmless cuteness. Even though I wanted to hate watch it, Craig Robinson and Joe Lo Truglio as the bumbling cops made it impossible to truly dislike.

I would watch a tv test pattern for 8 hours if someone told me Craig Robinson made an appearance at some point. But I gotta tell ya, I don’t think I can watch a movie called Hot Frosty.

Just watched Hot Tub Time Machine for the first time. Pretty good movie.

Hot Tub Time Machine 2 is even better. It’s basically just 4 real life friends making a movie for fun. And yes, Craig Robinson is in it.

Oooooo... nice! I've watched The Big Sleep a couple (few?) times. It is excellent. I'm not sure if I have actually seen The Maltese Falcon, but I've always wanted to. Especially being a fan of The Friends of Mr. Cairo.

Arsenic and Old Lace, 1944. Cary Grant, Peter Lorre, Raymond Massey, and a bunch of faces you'll recognize if you've seen many studio-era films. When Massey's character first appeared I exclaimed "Is that Boris Karloff?" Just last month I watched The Raven with Lorre and Karloff together. But no, I decided, it's not him. It looks like Raymond Massey but he wasn't in the credits. Well, yes he was, but somehow I'd missed his name, so now I was utterly at sea. Furthermore, wiki says that Karloff played the character in the original play; there's some meta stuff going on there that I had no idea about. Soon a running joke kicks off that plastic surgery has made Massey look like Karloff and his name comes up repeatedly.

It's a Frank Capra holiday movie that comes with the expected helping of corn, albeit with a dark flavor. Still LOL funny in parts after 80 years. Cary Grant's rubber face and physical comedy alone are worth your time. I recorded it off TCM.

Watched "Return of the King" with the kids this morning. It was their first time seeing it. Being with a group of people (especially kids) who are seeing it for the first time is nearly as fun as seeing it for the first time myself.

The audible cheering, gasping, and "eeeeeeew"'ing (at Shelob) was pretty awesome. Daughter 15.8 jumped off the couch with a "YES" and a fist-pump at the "I am no man!" moment.

You know I loved both those series of movies but I have never seen that? Maybe one day. I think the last of either of those I saw were parts of Jason X and then only because it was in space and had a topless Lexa Doig.

We just saw the original (1974) version of Murder On The Orient Express.
Hadn't seen it since the 80's and forgot just how many big-name actors were in it.

Albert Finney is by a large stretch NOT the best Hercule Poirot.
He raised overacting to an art form though.

Still, a fun movie.

Coming up next week we have got tickets to the original (again, 1974) Burt Reynolds version of The Longest Yard.
Really looking forward to that one.

Followed up the very next day by a perennial favorite, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
That one is always a treat. Also, Michelle Monaghan is a very attractive woman.

Watched a really great Christmas movie called The Holiday. Like a Hallmark movie. I think my wife would have liked it. Starred Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jack Black Eli Wallach, and Shannyn Sossamon.

We watched Red One last night, and I must say I was pleasantly entertained. You had Chris Evans playing against type as a sleazy criminal, The Rock being....The Rock, and J.K. Simmons playing the most ripped Santa Claus in cinematic history. The lore was fun, it had a good message, what's not to love? I think it's only real flaw was being a touch too long, but other than that it's a film I'd like to see a sequel for. Sign me up for Red Two.

I think the critics were overly harsh on it, which is a shame. I think it will find success on streaming though. (Case in point, RT critic score is 30% while the audience score is a whopping 90%!)

I haven't seen it, but I think I was probably expecting little from the Timothy-Chalamet-as-Bob-Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown.

However, this review makes it sound like a very good treatment of early Dylan era.

Also, Chalamet is doing all the singing. There's no lip-synching to old Dylan, and the performances are recorded in-scene (as opposed to doing a studio version away from the acting). Apparently he does a very good Dylan, and there's a *lot* of performance.

Just finished "The Usual Suspects," and I'm glad that "What We Do..." and hepcat spoiled the ending for me, because I wouldn't have been able to follow it if I hadn't known where it was going. There were just too many characters and convoluted double-crosses for my elderly brain to track. Great cast and clever screenplay, though, and I'm glad I got shamed into watching it.
