I'm a Squirrel Girl fan, but I really only know the character from the defunct Marvel Heroes mmo (still far and away my most-played game on Steam).

I'm also a Howard the Duck fan, so take that as you will... :coffee:

He's not the hero, he's still a villain. It's the story of his rise.
And therein lies one of their big problems - their superhero universe is almost completely lacking in heroes.

You know, Howard would be a great way to satirize so many things in a movie.

Is there a comic-book reason why he's called "Kraven"?

Because "craven" means "cowardly; lacking courage."

In the comics, it's a play on his real name (Sergei Kravinoff), but that was most likely written to explain the handle, not the other way around. As to why Lee/Ditko decided to name him that... I have no idea.

Then again, Stan Lee was also known for coming up with words for things that didn't take into account their full meaning.

I guess it's like the "Super 8" motel chain ("suppurate" meaning "to fester; to discharge pus").

I'm not sure that's an inaccurate description.

Well, I guess it'll be on Netflix in a week or so:
Kraven the Hunter has hit a record franchise low in its opening weekend. The J. C. Chandor-directed movie, which follows a hunter who uses his bond with animals to help get revenge on his criminal father, is the latest installment in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, which includes the commercially successful Venom trilogy as well as the critical and commercial flops Morbius and Madame Web.

...

Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Kraven the Hunter is projected to close out its opening weekend with a 3-day domestic gross of $11 million. This is not enough for the movie to topple the holdover Thanksgiving hits Moana 2 and Wicked, which maintain their positions at the top of the chart, letting the Spider-Man Universe movie land at No. 3 in its debut. Additionally, it has earned the worst opening weekend of the entire franchise, coming in below the previous record-holder, which was Madame Web with a $15.3 million debut.

I really do like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, so I wish it hadn't been a complete disaster. I honestly think he'd make a great James Bond, which is something I've heard bounced around here and there.

The trailers made the movie look decent enough for an action movie. But the reviews were just so savage that I'm honestly curious to watch it just to see how bad it really is. They did the same thing with Morbius and despite Jared Leto being in the movie I didn't totally hate that one.

To be fair I was about a 6 pack deep when I watched Morbius, so my memory of that one could be slightly off. But only a thesbian of Leto's caliber could pull off a line like that.

so....
Spoiler:
He doesn't actually say that in the movie. That's an internet joke that I found particularly funny. Someone just dubbed over a scene with that line. It took off and became so popular that Sony even rereleased the film into theaters to capitalize on it.

Maybe it's me, but I had never heard of Kraven before this movie. Also, that...title...

I think he's another person pointing out that Kraven means cowardly…even though the spelling is off.

It's a silver age (1964) name for a Spider-Man villain. It fits fine with such well-named luminaries as Electro, Hyrdro-man, and Crime Master.

Yep, leopard print tights. They should have kept that - the movie might have gone over better as a comedy.

Most non-comics fans don't know who Kraven the hunter is. The title sounds like a low budget barbarian movie from the eighties.

I only remember him as a kid - from the Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends cartoon (1981):

Just came back from seeing this, it's a semi-forgettable action flick but definitely not as horrible as the reviews are making it out to be. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is really good in the role. I certainly liked it better than Morbius (which was probably the first time that I was bored watching a superhero movie).
