I got a
ASUS ROG Strix Scope II 96 Wireless for Christmas, based on a lot of review sites that had it listed as one of their top picks.
Likes:
- Chunky keys with a good feel (it's not quiet, but not as loud as an old-fashioned mechanical keyboard)
- Customizable volume knob above the keypad is *chef's kiss*. I was constantly having to adjust volume through the systray which was a pain. It can be customized to perform a few alternate functions as well
- Battery life seems to be really good - I hooked it up at Christmas and didn't do my first recharge until a couple of days ago. So a solid 3 weeks or so and that's with the LEDs going constantly while in use. And the recharging is a breeze, it comes with a lengthy USB cable to pop into my front USB slot.
Dislikes:
- The 96% compact layout is something I'm still getting used to nearly a month into using it. While I specifically chose it to be more compact since I have a smallish keyboard tray, my muscle memory is having a very difficult time adjusting. I know eventually I'll get there, but for now I hit wrong keys constantly
- The great battery life is thanks to somewhat aggressive power saving on turning LEDs off when not in use. This can be adjusted for duration and even disabled entirely, but I've tried to keep at least some power savings measures in place. The biggest problem for me is given my current office lighting, it can be extremely difficult to make out the keys when the LEDs are off. While a single keystroke brings them back to life, I wish the printed lettering for the Shift symbols, etc. were brighter
- The ASUS software is an absolute nightmare, and far more complex than it needs to be. I spent a good 2 hours fighting with it when I first got it to both update all the drivers and figure out how to customize everything.
While my dislikes might make it seem like I'm "meh" on the keyboard overall, I do really like it. It feels much more solid and "premium" than my old beat up Logitech, and I've had no latency issues or anything with it being wireless. It's been rock solid for gaming and everything else I've thrown at it.
