Wow, a little older than I'd expect, but Fillion is a great choice for Guy Gardner. Arorwverse already had a great Mr Fantastic, but I'm looking forward to seeing what they do. As to Hawkgirl? She's a great character, but to be honest, I'm a little Hawked out. They've been used a lot in live action.

I would say this is good news:

After years of rumors and wishful thinking from fans and Jason Momoa himself, Jason Momoa has been cast to play the Main Man, Lobo.

Jason Momoa posted to his Instagram, an image of a quote from himself back in 2023 during an interview he did with Fandango. The quote reads:

“So Lobo was… I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,’” he said at the time. “I mean, listen. If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a f*ck yeah. I haven’t received that call, so I don’t want to put any fake news out there, but if they ever call me and ask to play, or ask me to audition, I’m there.”

The caption was simple: “They called.”

There you have it! From Jason Momoa’s Instagram, a one hundred percent confirmation that he will be playing Lobo!

Deadline is reporting that Jason Momoa will make his debut as Lobo, not his own solo film but in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. There have been no details confirmed about the plot of the movie from James Gunn, director of the movie, Craig Gillespie, the script writer, Ana Nogueira, or Supergirl herself, Milly Alcock. If casting is underway for more than just the titular character, we can expect rumors to begin circulating any moment and more official announcements to come soon.

I hope it's good, like I hope all Marvel and DC properties are good, but I don't find Lobo interesting at all. His invulnerability is boring, and his personality and aesthetic were probably really cool for 12-year-olds in 1992.

I wish they’d stop recasting the same group of actors as different heroes even within the same movie universe. I find it distracting. That’s one thing I was hoping Gunn would stop doing. There are thousands of actors out there. But I guess casting the best person for the role takes a back seat to casting the most popular actor. I get it.

Also, I’m with AWS on the Lobo character. He has always felt derivative and two dimensional.

Happy to find out it isn't just me. I actually had no idea who he even is. I read the wiki page, and... I am completely ambivalent. The character seems all over the place. Powers appear to be whatever is cool at the time. And he really isn't a nice guy. Maybe they'll rewrite him like they did with Kraven to make him into some kind of hero...

Sandman was never a two dimensional character built solely to excrete testosterone for a teen male crowd.

As for Peacemaker, he was also more complicated than Lobo ever was. He existed as an ideological paradox as a way to (in my opinion) criticize a toxic view of justice permeating comics.

Lobo smoked a cigar, talked about himself in the third person, rode a space Harley and loved space dolphins. That was the extent of the character.

I’m a huge James Gunn fan. I’ve stated that numerous times. So I’m also hoping he changes the character by giving him some more depth. But I prefer more his taking on the obscure underdogs from comics and fleshing them out.

Note to self: send Gunn my idea for a Matter Eater Lad movie.

And my other issue is with recycling the same group of actors in both Marvel and DC. I’m also a huge fan of Nathan Fillion, but felt casting him as Guy Gardner was not the way to go since he’d just appeared in Suicide Squad as a different character. Also, once I saw the Duane Dibley haircut in the trailer for Superman I was a little disappointed. But that’s nitpicking at that point, I will admit.

I honestly think all directors should have been made to intern with either Lloyd Kaufman or Roger Corman for a few years before going out on their own. Gunn working outside the established Hollywood system before joining it shaped him. And for the better.

I'm ok with reusing actors during reboots but as much as I like Nathan Fillion I REALLY can't see him as Guy Gardner.
I'd pick him as Hal Jordan easily but Guy just seems weird.

I guess I was more keyed into the idea that all those characters (Lobo, The Sandman and Peacemaker) all feel very dated and/or of their time. I've read The Sandman at least four times and it feels very much like a late 1980s / early 1990s comic book. The ideas transcend, but the look and feel never changes. I thought the Netflix show did a good job of capturing the essence and modernizing the feel. While Lobo isn't Shakespearian, I am hopeful he can be translated into something viable for a modern audience even if he was a bit of a one-note wonder back in the day.

Anyway, yeah - Lobo has always been very much a late-80s/early 90s-feeling throwback. I happen to enjoy his particular flavor of that, and I'm confident that Gunn will manage to be true to the character while giving him a more modern tweak or two.

I absolutely agree - and that's what happened when Jason Momoa was cast as Aquaman coming off of Khal Drogo. Making him Lobo is, I believe, casting the best person for the role. He's been lobbying for the role forever, and fans have wanted him the role forever (I remember seeing discussions of it clear back when he was on Stargate Atlantis.) It actually reminds me a bit of the thing with Deadpool and Ryan Reynolds.

As an aside, this is the book I'm reading. It's a bit old at this point, but it's been a really interesting read so far. Like...I had no idea about DC's Madam Fatal - 1940!!
