Yeah - they can't just let people be. I haven't had a good night sleep in weeks now...I feel like our country is going to be ruined through no fault other than Trump got elected

We really should build more shipyards and the produce our own naval and trading ships. Then we can defend the Arctic like Trump wants without US involvement. This will allow our steel and aluminum industries to keep going during the tariff war and if we make some more merchant vessels it'll be easier to trade overseas and bypass the US

To be honest, I'm not sure. I know we have three shipyards but I remember hearing of many delays; I think we bought some old submarines from the UK and I don't think we've made any new naval ships in awhile. We were assured / discouraged by the US after WWII to get rid of our merchant navy and that we'd be protected by you guys. So, old habits die hard, but I think we've learnt now that we can no longer trust the US to have our backs so we'd better do it for ourselves.

Large vessel shipbuilding projects
To build Canada’s large vessels fleet, we’ve established long-term strategic relationships with 3 Canadian shipyards:
  • Irving Shipbuilding Inc., based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is building:
    • Canada's combat ship work package for the Royal Canadian Navy
    • non-combat vessels for the Canadian Coast Guard
  • Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards Co. Ltd., based in Vancouver, British Columbia, is building:
    • non-combat vessels for the Canadian Coast Guard
    • non-combat support ships for the Royal Canadian Navy
  • Chantier Davie Canada Inc., based in Lévis, Quebec, is building non-combat vessels for the Canadian Coast Guard

Yeah, that's true. I'm sure it's like most everything else in Canada...we have the natural resources but I'm guessing most of the refining into gas is happening outside of the country and then we buy it back. Might be wrong there...just speculating based on growing up in Nfld. The oil being drilled offshore is shipped away...the refinery on the island is shut down more than it's up

The Refining Sector in Canada
Canada is a net exporter of petroleum products. Yet, at times, product imports can play a significant role in satisfying petroleum product demand. The availability of both crude oil and petroleum product imports in every region hinges on geographic constraints. Each of these regions has its own natural features and this creates some unique situations.

Some regions are better suited than others to import products. Because of their connection via major waterways, Atlantic Canada and Quebec have good access to supplies from the northeastern United States and Europe. Because of there easy access to water for both importing crude oil feedstocks and for exporting petroleum products, Atlantic Canada has two large export refineries that send large portions of their output to market on the U.S. eastern seaboard. When economic conditions are favourable, East Coast Canadian refiners have sent products to markets as far away as California.

Ontario also has access to supplies from large U.S. markets and can also bring in provisions via Quebec. However, logistical constraints, such as the size of ships that can navigate the Seaway and the seaway-shipping season, increase the cost of these supplies. Other modes of transportation, such as pipeline, unit train and trucking, are necessary to bring in products from other regions.

Western Canada is landlocked, and as such, has very limited access to supplies from other regions. The current infrastructure was not designed to transport supplies to the Prairies from other regions. However, the prairies supply a substantial volume of gasoline into the Vancouver market. In the event of a supply shortage in the Prairies, refiners have the ability to balance supply and demand by importing product into Vancouver from Washington State. This frees up additional product from Edmonton area refiners to be distributed to prairie markets.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

My parents (well, my mom, since dad died in 2020) go to church with the local CEO of Austal USA in Mobile, Alabama. Austal built Independence-class Littoral Combat Ships for the US Navy, which are now widely derided as costly disappointments.

Canada might do well to avoid American shipyards.

This is true, and there are more of these the further north you go. But it still doesn't explain why it's so high within the city limits. We have a landmass similar to Toronto, but more spread out.

And yeah, this is exactly my reading. It's the sudden attention and the loud MAGA voices, which are loud and arrogant. I know it can't and won't happen, but it doesn't help in making me feel less unsettled. Guess we'll just have to blare out some Nickelback 24/7.

I'm in Ajax and ours is cheaper just because we have a Costco nearby; the local stations lower their prices to compete

Yeah, see we do have a Costco and they put in a gas station about a year ago, but it's still fairly high at 1.49.

It's $1.49 at my local Shell...probably $1.39 at Costco

I know there was talk when Costco was working on building their gas station here, that it would come with lower prices, but it hasn't really happened. It's roughly the same price as other places in the city.

I can only hope that means he's rethinking it. But kind of funny how he made so much noise about it being day-one and now it's delayed. Now he knows though that Canada is prepared for retaliatory tariffs.

Or maybe whichever policy wonk has his ear today told him that he already got what he wanted, like the new investments in border security.

He's doing lots of stuff today, don't sweat it. The last I heard they had something like a couple hundred executive orders written up and ready to go. However those tiny little hands can only handle so many signatures before they cramp up, so it's going to take some time to get through them all.

He can't reason, but he can simply declare victory and turn to the next shiny object: Panama, bitcoin, Ivanka, etc.

Canada might just be lucky enough for that to happen right now.

In other words, let's hope a more pressing concern develops that takes his attention away from Canada. What we need is for it to wash over.

Ah, apparently he's musing doing 25% on Feb 1st now.

"We're thinking in terms of 25 per cent [tariffs] on Mexico and Canada because they're allowing vast numbers of people … and fentanyl to come in," Trump said.

"I think we'll do it Feb. 1," the president said in response to a question about when those tariffs could be implemented.

From what I understand there's very little coming from Canada to US, but much more from the US to Canada, but sure use that as an excuse to tariff us to oblivion

Yeah, in fact one thing Canada could do is demand that the U.S reinforce its northern borders to prevent guns and drugs coming into Canada, since that is the bigger issue. I've heard some our politicians talking about that possibility.

Odds are you're also going to see an uptick in American refugees crossing your border and claiming asylum. Yes: we're going to empty our lunatic asylums and send them all to Canada!

You say that as if any of this has anything to do with reality or rational logic.

Demanding that the USA secure it's northern border is more likely to result in the USA moving the border north, until it feels secure, than anything else.

Yeah, you're not wrong Max. It's just a bullshit reason he's come up with. At least most Americans don't want that, but since a US customs agent was shot and killed yesterday, presumably by an illegal crossing from Quebec, that might change their opinion. I'm sure it'll be enough reason for Trump
