One criticism I've seen is that the Atlantic here just seems small.

In the Silent Hunter games, the ocean was scaled at about 30% of its actual size, but that was enough to give you a sense of vast emptiness and distance. I've seen UBOOT's Atlantic described as feeling like "the size of the Black Sea."

Is that you players' impression? Is it an immersion-breaker?

I haven't had any feeling about it being too small.

Um, I didn't notice a single thing like that.

It's not like anyone is going in real-time from one end of the Black Sea to the other, or with the Atlantic, so if that was a dear friend of mine that said that to me, I would honestly tell them I don't really understand what they were getting at.

I suppose there can be some points in northeastern scotland (or perhaps all over) that have coastlines that shouldn't see other coastlines - and I don't notice that type of shrinkage.

So perhaps it's fair critique if you are familiar with the coastline.

(or make for some unfair 'choke points'....) ?

Given the recent sale, I dove in and bought the game. ALAAAARM!

First question: are there any must-have mods I should know about? I'm a veteran SH3/SH4 player and would love as much complexity and historical realism as possible.

4 I can recommend right now:

GJC's Big Radio Collection
[2024.1] Functional RDF antenna
Authenic Goods
[2024.1] Community Patch *(not entirely sure how much this may still be needed, but it's updated for the Release, and during the final Beta was helpful with a couple little things) - not really a "realism" thing...

Those 4 do work with the Release version (even the 2 that say they are out of date)

The Release version has put a number of the older mods 'out of date' and some people report they indeed need some attention still.

Also, one small heads-up: There isn't really a pause in the game. It just slows the game down very very much, but if you are under attack, and need to deal with something IRL, you should be aware of that. (saving is always an option, and likely a good idea anyhow)

Also, FYI

non 'steam' Screenshot (F10 by default) are stored in:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\LocalLow\Deep Water Studio\UBOAT\Screenshots

tips:
  • you can click-n-drag your officer's portraits to be in what ever order/position you like
  • you can grab the rim of your gyrocompass, rudder control, etc - and undock them from the upper right corner, and move them - say, to the far left corner where they can stay out forever. (some people like that)
  • N will use the free-cam (should you allow yourself that)
  • Hold off on assigning specializations until you find people with Sea Wolf trait
  • If you want to assign a task the priority 10 or 11 (or 12, etc) - clicking on the number 1, once to select the whole number, and then once again to the side a smidge to get a blinking cursor where you can enter the number 0 or 1 (or 2, etc) to make the 2 digit number you want.

70% off until Feb 1st.

Also, reasonably big update yesterday on (enemy) Damage Simulations

snip:
Engine rooms. They are usually located behind the funnels, towards the stern. Damage here often leads to a major fuel oil or lubricant fire and immobilizes the ship.

Ammunition storages. Damage may trigger a powerful secondary explosion that often seals the fate of a ship.

Boilers. They are always located beneath the funnels and may explode with a burst of hot steam when damaged. In addition, disabling all boilers on a steamship, immobilizes it.

Cargo holds. Hitting cargo holds can have varying effects depending on the cargo. For example, if a ship is carrying coal, there is a chance of starting a fire.

Armor. The largest ships in the game, such as cruisers and battleships, now have protective steel armor belts that can block most shells. They also provide a limited protection from torpedoes.

Torpedo belts. These are also present only on the largest warships and provide an additional protection from torpedoes.
