Argh! I think my Microphone Just Died

Post by Kasey Chang »

This mic is a big head condenser mic with USB port in the back, but I guess it *could* be the cable. as I did keep it at a 90 degree bend for a while. Fortunately, replacement cable is just $2 on Amazon... from Monoprice, even. However, if it's the mic, I may just dump it and replace it with a sleeker looking one.

* I use a USB microphone on a swing-arm, purchased back in 2017 (arm added later)
* The microphone seems to have failed. No longer recognized by Win11 PC. Not sure if it's the cable, or microphone itself that failed.
* Cable is only $2.00 for a 6 ft version (USB-A, the flat plug too USB-B, the "square" plug, usually seen on printers) so I ordered THAT.

EDIT: The plot thickens, the microphone is back in service, but I already ordered a replacement on Amazon. Should I cancel the replacement (there's still time, as I chose delayed shipping for the bonus bucks due to Prime Day traffic)? Or should I return it when I get it?

I'm thinking that if my existing mic is this flakey, it may fail again, then this replacement Mic (HyperX Solocast) won't be on sale for $33.

On the other hand, I'm extremely tight on money this month. I can use that 35 (33+tax) for something else.

Normally, I'm all in favor of backups, but if money is tight, cancel it. There's always better technology and another deal down the road.

Looks like my microphone finally died for good, as no amount of fiddling will get it to come back on. So I spent $20 to buy a Joby Wavo Pod. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be compatible with my existing shock mount, but I have an adapter that will just connect it to the arm. For $20, I guess I can't really complain that hard.

EDIT: Given that a NEW shockmount will cost me at least $15, I say I'll do without, at least for the near future.

At any rate, sounds like it was on its last legs so hey, they didn’t break the bank on the new mic. With that adapter so it stays on the arm the Joby Wavo Pod looks like a good budget choice. ...Hopefully it'll work out without any more compatibility headaches.

Windows and NVIDIA app are giving me problems. I had NVIDIA and NVIDIA Broadcast working properly, except now I can't get them too work either in just audio capture (microphone to separate track instead of mixed with system sound) or trying to add voiceover to my existing recorded video (as either part of audio track 2 or as audio track 3). The audio track that's supposed to record Broadcast now just get BLANK.

I've checked all settings thrice, then read that someone went back to GeForce Experience app, which is like predecessor of the NVIDIA app. So I uninstalled the NIVIDIA app and reinstalled GeForce Experience. They even use the same keyboard shortcuts, and I tested a recording and played it back on VLC. The microphone track did get my audio correctly. I'll have to try Davinci Resolve next.
