‘X-Files’ actor proclaims he is lifting the show’s Super Bowl curse on the Buffalo Bills
“I am today officially removing my curse on the Buffalo Bills,” Davis wrote. “If they are able to defeat Kansas City I will permit them to go on and win the Super Bowl. Go Bills Go. .......................Cigarette Smoking Man.”

Didn't watch any of the games yesterday. Instead took the kiddo record shopping in the neighborhood and then grabbed some hog dogs. Finally, an enjoyable and productive Sunday.

I went for a great mountain bike ride, then came home and speed watched the games on the dvr with some air fryer wings. It was a great day.

I don't really care about football at all, but have greatly enjoyed the people getting raging butthurt over the Chiefs winning. I've been watching ref conspiracy theories all morning and it's comedy gold.

I didn't mind KC winning only because it means my daughter will watch the Super Bowl with me now.

LOL. It will be nonsense and flags and close calls, and a late KC score to win. Same as every other time.

It's wild how much people believe it, too. I think people just remember those calls because they're looking for a reason to hate the Chiefs. I get it. I hate the Patriots. People get tired of hearing how great Mahomes is. They're tired of those damn State Farm commercials. They're tired of the T-Mobile commercials. So they're looking for reasons to bash the Chiefs. But there is not conspiracy among NFL referees to put the Chiefs into the super bowl. At least not anything that can be proven with facts. Facts don't show the Chiefs getting more calls than other teams nor do they show more drive extending penalties for the Chiefs. They do show that they're in the top third of teams but nowhere near the top. Of course you'd expect a team that wins to have fewer penalties because teams that commit penalties tend to lose more.

Here's a few links for anyone interested. All from the same site.
Opponent Penalties by team that benefited - This is for 2024.
Drive Excending automatic first down penalties - This isn't just for this year, unfortunately. It's from 2009-present.
Passing Penalties the benefited the offense - These are for 2024.

There's lots of other stats there. Maybe someone can find proof that the refs have the fix in.

Any team that has success is going to get the "refs cheating" accusations. Duke basketball used to get that ALL the time. One famous stat for Duke was that they made more free throws than their opponents attempted. People would point at that as proof refs favored Duke. In reality, Duke players just didn't foul a lot (because they were a good team and trained not to foul) and conversely they knew how to draw fouls. It wasn't a ref conspiracy, it was a legitimate coaching strategy.

I also find it funny that people sitting on their couches watching the one camera angle they have from the broadcast know more about what the refs could and couldn't see than the actual refs standing on the freaking field mere feet away from the play.

For the record, I'm not defending KC or any particular call in the game. Maybe the fix is in and I'm just naive. I'm just here to enjoy the memes. :D

Yup. And people (understandably) bitch about the roughing the passer calls, but I think that's the same thing - Mahomes knows what the refs will call and times his slides accordingly, knowing that inevitably he'll get a few roughing calls as a result. I think they should revise how they call roughing the passer, but I think it's silly to think it's some ref conspiracy.

I don’t much care about the penalties. I care about incorrectly officiating the game, all of us seeing that the game was officiated incorrectly during a review, and the sticking with the incorrect call.

It is not possible to have one hand on top of a football, and have the entire bottom of the football hit the ground, and your conclusion is “cool, that’s a catch”. We all saw that it wasn’t a catch. The broadcast booth saw it wasn’t a catch. The longtime ex-official in the booth saw that it wasn’t a catch. Result? Catch, first and goal.

Or the sequence when BUF had the ball with a 3rd and 3. They throw to the TE, who clearly gets a first down. Ref moves it back half a yard. No first down. Then they go for it on fourth down, and they get a first down. The ref with the view of Allen’s front (with the ball) comes in and spots it correctly as a first down. The ref on the other side, who was looking at Allen’s back, marks the ball short. They elect to go with the official that did not see the ball at any time during the play. Go to the review, and everyone can clearly see the ball passed the line to gain. They marked the screen along the line, the ball clearly passes it. Result? Call upheld, turnover on downs.

What I cannot abide is when the technology you have tells you the right answer, and we can all see the right answer, and you go with the wrong answer. That turnover on downs completely turned the game around. Certainly Buffalo could have won later. But they were put in a place where they had to do more, due to official incompetence.

When was the last time a call like that went against KC in a pivotal moment of a playoff game?

This is me but I'm a Lions Homer, so I don't count. Even being a homer, the playoffs were done for me when the Bills were done (Even as the Bills already won earlier in the season. Bastards). *shrug*

It’s not that the fix is in. That’s tin-hat territory. But the Chiefs are incredibly lucky (and a little crafty) when it comes to being the beneficiary of some obviously bullshit calls. The crew officiating the Bills/Chiefs game actually had an incredibly low number of roughing the passer calls thrown during the regular season, whether by design by the NFL or not. They also had officiated other KC games and handed out a below avg number of flags. I think the NFL did its best to try to avoid the narrative that the outcome of this game was decided by the refs. But still . . . Crucial calls were objectively incorrect at critical moments of the game helping the Chiefs to yet another one score win. The fix isn’t in. But the Chiefs are incredibly annoying.

But it was a hell of a game by both teams. There have been some real Super Bowls snooze-fests. 2022 Eagles/Chiefs was not one, and the rematch this year may be even better!

Yeah, the Chiefs do get some breaks (I saw one start looking at how I'm 9 of 10 playoff games they've gotten more roughing calls/penalties), but what they absolutely excel at is taking advantage of those opportunities.

Other teams do get opportunities but don't take as much advantage.

They are following the patriots blueprint, getting the best qb in the game and navigating the salary cap by not overpaying other skill positions, and keeping a great defense without too many stars together.

You are, oh maybe just a little to close to the subject to be a good judge, wouldn’t you say ?

The rest of America is simply tired of KC (for starters) and perhaps a little tired of the Eagles too (not nearly as much).

While the ‘rematch’ may be a good ‘contest’ or ‘match up’ , it’s a complete and total snoozer for America.

I'll say this. Within a span of about 48-50 hours, the Lions lost a soul crushing game, we inaugurated probably our last elected president, and tOSU won a national title. For me, that's a shit sandwich with shit bread, probably an overpriced artisan shit sourdough. The fact that we'll now be subject to more KC populism again this year is just shit icing, and who puts icing on a sandwich?

I'm just over [North American] football for now. Sorry Eagles, you probably deserve better.

The Eagles do not deserve better. The tush push needs to die and that fan base is a cancer on the NFL. I agree with everything else you said, though.

Fair enough, I guess, if you're talking about Americans that care more about Super Bowl commercials, half-time shows and narrative drama than they do about watching a very good football game.

If you want to watch two competitive teams with HoF-destined players playing football at the absolute top of their game, this match up is not a snoozer by any metric.

Edited to add: Also, I don't understand the quotes around 'rematch' or 'contest' or 'match up.' What do those mean?

I agree. I will say that the matchup lacks an underdog that uncommitted fans can route for. Like if the Lions, Vikings, or Bills had made it, almost everyone could pull for them in support of a tortured fan base. So it lacks that engaging angle. But the game itself should be good.

To some extent I get the disappointment that there aren't new teams or the underdogs like the Guapster mentions, but you've got two good football teams, including the best QB and RB currently in the game, going at it in the championship. I really don't get how this could be considered a snoozefest.

The problem isn’t the game itself, it’s that I don’t care if a meteor hits the Superdome and incinerates both teams inside.

The Chiefs have worn out their welcome and everyone hates them with Brady levels of hate.

The Eagles are coached by the most hate-able human being in the NFL, this side of Deshaun Watson.

I want both teams to lose. That’s what makes it a snooze fest.

Actually, I'm not sure why I put quotes on the word "rematch". But for the other two, it was used because they are two things that I feel mean the same thing in this context. A 'contest' or 'match up' in the way sports fans mean those words. I agree that the game will fit that bill. That's what I meant by putting those two things in quotes. It will be only that - and, yes - that some narrative drama is indeed part of the appeal to any game... You can't say you aren't entirely in the middle of the narrative drama for this game.

I'll watch it, for good football. I won't really have a side that I care about winning though. Snoozefest is a bad word for it. Sometimes those can be relaxing and just fun to watch. But nothing like watching a Superbowl where you care at all about one side winning.

What's most important, though, is when will we stop having to hear people say bundlerooski? I'm not a Chiefs hater (surprisingly since I was a Charger's fan) but I am so sick of the state farm commercials. Every time they come on I feel like Michael Scott when Toby walks in to the room.
