What NOT To Talk About On OO
I feel like it will be interesting to have an almost completely empty discussion thread here.
As the world becomes more complex and challenging, some people will want to talk about things that might be better not posted online. They should NOT talk about those things on OO.
Perhaps it will be useful to re-post this nearly empty thread as a reminder from time to time.

Re: What NOT To Talk About On OO
If we ever get to a point where the thought patrol gets around to scraping OO, everyone will probably already be rounded up or fighting running gun battles in the street.
But I'll say it anyway. The Beatles aren't just overrated, they're plain boring.
And you probably wouldn't know it looking at my posts but I do self-censor some of them.

20 years from now, people are going to pat the pockets of their jacket and find a green beanie cap with a big "L" on the front. They're gonna smile and say, "Wow...what a strange year that was!" before they grab their machete and head out back into the wildlands to fight off the hordes of Proud Boy maga zombies.Max Peck wrote: Mon Feb 03, 2025 11:19 amLet me fix that for you: Never discuss Mario's younger twin brother, especially if you think he might have had some good ideas.hepcat wrote: Mon Feb 03, 2025 11:01 am Side note: my favorite thing is a thread asking people what should be considered off limits in R&P is the least political thread on OO.![]()

Re: What NOT To Talk About On OO
Yeah, so naturally the similarly named Nintendo character has become a symbol, mostly in meme form.
Hilariously, my younger sister who's learning disabled has a number of special interests and Nintendo is one of them. I've liked Luigi since I was a child, and for Christmas she got me a bright green Luigi toque/beanie, complete with the L, with absolutely no knowledge of current events.
I'm seriously wary of wearing it out of the house lest some deluded, capitalism-worshipping wannabe fascist picks a fight with me. I also don't want people to think I espouse murder. My dilemma is that it's by far the most comfortable winter hat I own, with a satisfying, durable knit and sufficient material to fully cover my ears (I have a big head and most hats don't do the trick).

Instead of pepperoni, use sliced hot dogs. Instead of tomato sauce, use ketchup. Top with cheddar on sourdough, microwave on high for 5 minutes. Voila, New York Pizza!

Just to be serious for a moment, I think the scraping is going to be universal rather than targeted, if it isn't already.LawBeefaroni wrote: Mon Feb 03, 2025 10:15 am If we ever get to a point where the thought patrol gets around to scraping OO, everyone will probably already be rounded up or fighting running gun battles in the street.

I'd expect both. I thought the only things we didn't talk about were quotes from a certain comedy troupe and mentioning a name beginning in D and ending in -art?

Or we can just post random stuff in this thread to keep it going:
WhatsApp uses the same protocol as Signal which is great for security. WhatsApp’s terms of service explicitly give them the right to share your metadata with other Facebook/Meta companies so they can profile you and sell advertising. I also think Zuck will play ball.
WhatsApp, for all its faults, is better than many of the alternatives, it’s still not as good as Signal for privacy but of course when you put words to paper as it were, all bets are off.
In both cases of Signal and Whatsapp using Signal Protocol, the contents of the envelope are secure in transit from one device to the other. This is security.
In the case of Whatsapp, the details on the outside of the envelope (to: from: time: date: size of envelope: etc) along with how frequently envelopes are sent, are all captured as metadata which can be (and is) used by Meta, as well as be sold by Meta to other companies, and more importantly, can be provided to law enforcement. This is (a lack of) privacy. Just in case you were trying to use WhatsApp for privacy and not security. Meta has complie with providing data to police to prosecute a teenager for abortion for e.g.

Are we allowed to talk about fight club? Or is Siljanus still upset that we paired him with a bear dressed as a toddler?
