Re: What are ya watch'n [MOVIES]
I love a good western so I started watching Costner’s vanity project, Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1.
Good Christ, it’s all over the place. He’s trying to tell like 4 stories across multiple states in the mid 1800s, but he has no clue how to tie them together coherently. People show up out of the blue then disappear again without any attempt to explain who they are or what the mean to the story. Right now I’m at the 1 hour and 45 minute mark and they JUST started the 4th story. I think I’m done for the night.

I enjoyed Horizon, but I don't disagree that it is sprawling. It feels like a movie that will be better in hindsight after the sequel(s) are released and these character start coming together. I still think it would have been much better received as a streaming series, where the jumps between narratives wouldn't have seemed abnormal.

Does it have a robot staring off into wheat fields?
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Re: What are ya watch'n [MOVIES]
Wait for the director's cut. In which they'll introduce stories 5 through 12 without bothering to give you any coherent plot for them as well.
I did watch Rebel Moon II: Director's Cut on Sunday. When I came to, it was Tuesday. But I found that I had become like the main character from Flowers for Algernon....
...well, from the beginning and the end of the story.

Absolutely. It seems like it was made for that, then edited into a movie at times.YellowKing wrote: Thu Jan 09, 2025 10:47 am I still think it would have been much better received as a streaming series, where the jumps between narratives wouldn't have seemed abnormal.

Re: What are ya watch'n [MOVIES]
Cuckoo is on Hulu. I had seen the trailer for this when I saw Longlegs last summer. And after Longlegs, I realized I would have preferred seeing Cuckoo based on that trailer (not that Longlegs is bad, it just felt a bit anticlimactic to me).
I watched it last night and it's another film with a 70s horror aesthetic. It reminded me a little bit of David Cronenberg's The Brood, which I loved as a kid. It's NOT a psychological drama, as some ads seem to want to make it out to be (and which I hate as I feel it's the most overused and lazy kind of horror film for the most part...with some notable exceptions, of course) . It's actually more of a creature feature.
Two thumbs up though. I really enjoyed it. Dan Stevens can do no wrong.

So, I watched TAR, and it was alright? Interesting character study, but I really disliked the ending.

Only The Brave, on Netflix. A great movie about a crew fighting wildfires, starring Jennifer Connelly, Josh Brolin, and Jeff Bridges. Feels quite topical.

Re: What are ya watch'n [MOVIES]
I just got back from Nosferatu, and I agree with all of the up-thread praise for it.
I love how much it captured the tone and feeling of nineteenth-century gothic without falling into a more modern style of horror. I never felt fear; what I felt was dread. It was about the monster's pull on your soul, not his threat to your life.
It's also a very "mannered" movie, not too subtle but never too broad or loud.
Interestingly, I thought the movie was less creepy than The Lighthouse. And I can't decide whether Dafoe's or Nosferatu's was the superior mustache.

Just a heads up: this is on Shudder now. I watched it last night. The lead actress was amazing at conveying emptiness.Jaymann wrote: Mon Jan 06, 2025 8:28 am Based on a YT review, I sought out Red Rooms, a psychological horror movie of the digital age. It is French-Canadian, so you have to be willing to follow subtitles. Not a big chore since the story is not hard to follow and the culture is accessible. Not for the squeamish, though the horrific parts are not conveyed graphically, but rather by showing facial reactions to witnessing the horror.
The motivations of the protagonist can be murky, and some of her actions are a bit baffling. But I like how it doesn't rub your nose in it and leaves you to draw some of your own conclusions. 7/8 bit coins.

Wolfs (2024, directed by Jon Watts), on Apple-.
The premise isn't fresh. But the execution is lovely. I love the title.
Yeah, it's an antagonistic-buddy cleaner/fixer action-comedy. But as one reviewer puts it, Pitt and Clooney exude a charm and classiness that elevate this far above what it would be were it instead The Rock and Vin Diesel starring in it. Everything here is refreshingly understated. The acting, the dialogue, the music, the action. The score gives me nostalgic vibes I can't place. Perhaps that's the beauty of it. It all very much feels in the spirit of all the best noir-adjacent media from 2007, or 2011 (though set in the present day). The action is fine but limited to several scenes. It's a tool of the story; this isn't a shooter. The setting has such a wonderful "metropolitan winter" presence. I might have to make this a routine holiday season watch.
6.5 out of 8.0 tentacles. Definitely recommended for fans of the actors or genre, or just beautifully shot film.
Significantly spoilery trailer that I think sells it quite well if you're not interested in going in blind:

Just finished the much buzzed about A Real Pain written, directed, and starring Jesse Eisenberg. Also starring Kieran Culkin.
Both are absolutely brilliant in this tale of two cousins who embark on a Jewish "tragedy tour" of Poland in honor of their recently deceased grandmother. It's sweet, it's heartbreaking, and it offers no easy answers.

I watched Boy Kills World a couple of days ago. Best film based on a graphic novel that isn't actually based on a graphic novel I've seen recently.
It clearly shows that they could have saved the Crow remake simply by having H. Jon Benjamin provide narration for Eric's inner monologue. No film couldn't be made better by doing that, now that I think of it.

We just got back from Heart Eyes and it's a super fun Valentine's Day slasher. Very reminiscent of the late 90s slashers (Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and of course, Cupid). I've been a big Josh Ruben fan ever since his debut film SCARE ME, so I'm really happy this movie's getting great reviews and introducing him to a wider audience.

When Worlds Collide (1951), directed by George Pal. No big-name stars but some familiar faces. How is it I'd never seen this before? Great special fx and reasonably plausible background science, considering it was made before humans had even launched even a satellite, but it's more about human nature than spaceflight and it succeeds quite well on that level. Worth $4 to stream on Prime.

Re: What are ya watch'n [MOVIES]
The Golden Child at the Alamo last night.
Six people total in the theater counting my wife and I.
It's almost like they scheduled it up against some major sporting event or something.
The movie itself holds up quite well even if the special effects, dated even for it's time, absolutely do not.
The exception being the dancing Pepsi can sequence which I had completely forgotten about.
Still, it was good to see it again in a theater setting but with Alamo now automatically including an 18% gratuity to the bill and with an absolutely dismal line up for the foreseeable future, I think we are going to cancel our season passes for now.
If something comes up in the future we'll re-up but it's just not worth it right now.

This Island Earth (1955) is free on YouTube. So many sf movies from that time are Cold War allegories, and this is one of those. I knew next to nothing about it going in and found it suspenseful. Sfx were generally quite good, with a few glaring exceptions (such as aliens that look like Oompa Loompas).

Just watched The Fall Guy with Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. It was a lot better than I expected it to be. I was a fan of the original tv show back in the day so didn't have high expectations for this movie. But it turned out to be a action packed romp from start to finish. It felt a little disjointed at times but overall a fun movie. Worth the watch. I remember when they made it how Ryan was talking up stunt guys on all the late shows he was on. They really are unsung heroes of film.

I liked The Fall Guy too, but I thought it ran a bit too long. I have very little patience for 2 hour plus movies these days, especially when they're of a genre that don't need to be that long. Freaking directors think they're being paid by the minute now.

Re: What are ya watch'n [MOVIES]
Just watched David Lynch: The Art Life, a documentary of his life on Max. There was one point where he was telling the story of when his family was moving from Boise, Idaho. His family and his next door neighbors, the Smiths, were out in the front yard saying goodbye. The story ends abruptly when he said, "...and then Mr. Smith came out of his house. I can't, I just can't go on."
I'm thinking WTF? Did he come out with an axe and start murdering everybody, scarring Lynch for life? They never came back to the story, so I had to look it up.
Anyway, a great look into the life and mind of a great one.

Re: What are ya watch'n [MOVIES]
Calloway Went Thataway (1951) Smoky Calloway was a singing movie cowboy resurrected from obscurity when that new medium, television, introduces him to the nation's children. Fred MacMurray and Dorothy McGuire are ad execs who land the lucrative contract to bring the superstar Calloway back with a TV series and merchandise tie-ins. Only problem is, Calloway disappeared into a bottle 10 years ago and nobody knows where he is. They launch a search that brings look-alike Stretch Barnes to their attention, and they manage to persuade Stretch to fill in for Smoky, even though Stretch is as naive and pure as Smoky is worldly and profane. (Howard Keel plays both rolls.) Things get complicated when the real Smoky turns up, still drunk and eager for a big payday ($2,000 a week...every week!).
Not a knee-slapping LOL comedy, but lots of fun. The full cast includes such familiar faces as Natalie Schafer ("Lovey" Howell), Hugh Beaumont (Ward Cleaver), and blink-and-miss-it cameos from Clark Gable, Elizabeth Taylor, and Esther Williams.
