Mr. President (GMT boardgame) coming to Steam
Big news for political boardgame fans.
GMT Games has just announced that Mr. President, their big, complex, solitaire-only game of managing the US presidency, is getting a Steam implementation. The announced release date is July 2025.
This is especially nice because the game has a significantly larger-than-average board footprint, and it takes a while to play a 4- or 8-year game. And since it is already a card-driven solitaire game, AI won't be an issue.

Dangit, I paid $69 last year to get in on their P500 price for the 2nd edition printing. I wonder how much it will cost and whether folks who own the boardgame will get a discount? Probably not.

Added to my wishlist to support the idea, but I'm not really sure it's a game I'm interested in - though I do know it's quite popular.
Here's hoping it's a strong success and it encourages GMT to add even more board games to Steam

Looks like you just saved me a hundred bucks or so. Thanks! Gonna cancel my preorder from my FLGS.

Yeah, I own a first edition, which I'll probably never put on the table now.raydude wrote: Mon Feb 17, 2025 6:50 pm Dangit, I paid $69 last year to get in on their P500 price for the 2nd edition printing. Still, this game was the brainchild and long-standing design project of Gene Billingsley, founder and owner of GMT. He has done a lot for the wargaming world (probably more than anyone in the past 25 years), and it's a personal-level enough hobby that I can feel OK about subsidizing the dream.

Actually, if you haven't been charged yet for the 2nd edition (and I don't think anyone has), you can cancel your order at GMT right now.raydude wrote: Mon Feb 17, 2025 6:50 pm Dangit, I paid $69 last year to get in on their P500 price for the 2nd edition printing. While you input your credit card at the time of ordering, P500 orders aren't actually charged until four or five weeks before shipping, and I don't think they're there yet.

Incidentally (as an unrelated tiP) check with GameNerdz or Miniature market for pre-orders of p500 games now. Depending on where you live (SEE: Anywhere but California) it's likely cheaper to order it from a vendor than have GMT ship it. For whatever reason, they refuse to modernize and still insist on receiving, packing and then shipping their own orders; they're terrible at it. I think they're testing the waters with major online vendors to see if it's viable, but it's still too slow - they insist on filling the p500s first (apparently) before releasing stock to the 3rd party vendors for shipping.

This is exciting. I really wanted to try the board game, but I had zero plans on actually purchasing it due to the large footprint and having too many other games in the backlog.

You're right! I cancelled my P500 order. It seems like a great game and while I'm a little regretful for doing it, they have over 1550 orders for it so I don't feel too bad. Besides, I still have my P500 order for the 5th printing of Empire of the Sun. Public service announcement: it's at 200 pre-orders, so if you want to get in on a game that lets you play WW2 in the Pacific Theatre, please do so!Holman wrote: Mon Feb 17, 2025 7:44 pmActually, if you haven't been charged yet for the 2nd edition (and I don't think anyone has), you can cancel your order at GMT right now.raydude wrote: Mon Feb 17, 2025 6:50 pm Dangit, I paid $69 last year to get in on their P500 price for the 2nd edition printing. I'm still waiting on Enemy Coast Ahead: The Dambuster Raid, 2nd Printing to hit 500.

It's almost as if people are the problem.

I'm sure they'll get a lot of cancellations, but I'm sure that they expected that when they made the announcement.raydude wrote: Tue Feb 18, 2025 1:44 pm You're right! I cancelled my P500 order. In any case, they'll still get money from the Steam version, and they'll probably reach a *much* larger audience for the game without having to ship so many pounds of paper and cardboard from China.

I heard about this game on a podcast and I was interested in checking it out. This announcement is very timely. The overwhelming percentage of my recent PC gaming is digital board games.

Re: Mr. President (GMT boardgame) coming to Steam
Positive feedback about Mr. President has led me to believe that its availability on Steam will provide easier accessibility for all its fanbase. The game functions best when restricted to solitaire format along with AI systems.
