Both of them are near the Ivona's Threshold area on the map. One of them is a two-story building with vine-covered doors and windows, but there's a hole in the roof to get in, and there's loot right by the window so you can see it. There's a ruined section next to the house and it backs up to a mountain, but I can't access the door or the roof. How do I get in??

The other is a cave of those little lizard people up on a rise just out of reach. They leap down from there and attack, but there doesn't seem to be a way to access it. You can see the giant tusk/horns framing the cave entrance, but I can't find a way up and it's leaving a rather large fog-of-war unexplored. Is there a superjump mechanic you get later on or what?
I know both those places, and haven't been able to get into either of them.

In the case of the cave, it's possible that it's not intended to be accessible. I found a post on reddit where someone claimed (but with no screenshot to confirm it) that he was able to climb up the to the top of the hill and drop down into the cave. It involves going around to be back where you find [redacted] and "finessing" your way up to the top. I spent a half hour trying and wasn't able to figure it out. The post also says that there isn't anything interesting in the cave, so doing it would be purely for bragging rights.

Ugh...thanks. Hate unresolved fog of war and teases like obvious loot in an unrecoverable spot. Makes me waste hours trying to accomplish something that wasn't meant to be accomplished.

Time saver tip. It took me about 6 hours of game time to figure this out, but you can remap your quick slot (the ones on the D pad) abilities. On the Xbox you hit the LB to pull up the radial menu, go to the item or power you want and then hit the D pad direction you want to assign it to. I wish the game had the ability to quick switch multiple D-pad setups so that you could have at least 2 different loadouts ready at all times, but I don't think you can do that.

One reason not to play this on GamePass... there a 3.3GB update, it is downloading at 1MB/s max, but dropping to 0 frequently. So much for knocking out some quests at lunch.

15 minutes later. 2.8/3.3GBs... This would be a 30 second update on steam.

Can you post a screenshot with some red circles? I have gotten into every place I have seen at this point but not sure I remember those specific locations. Not much fog on my map of the first area and my gear is maxed for first area materials and 8k in my pocket.

One thing I learned (by trial and error, although I'm sure that the tutorial probably tried to tell me at some point) is that when you aim down the sight with a ranged weapon, hitting that diamond-shaped icon that appears, usually on the target's head, greatly increases the chance of getting a critical hit. Or maybe guarantees a crit, I dunno, you can't expect me to read up on it. I figured it out by accident because I have a trinket that causes critical hits to inflict poison, and I eventually clued in that hitting them there was causing the poison to proc more reliably.

I'm also kicking myself for upgrading one of my weapons to the fine quality tier, then acquiring a unique weapon of the same type from a side quest, so now I'll never use my upgraded weapon again. That's a fat stack of crafting material that I won't get back... Of course, having the upgraded weapon might be why it was so easy to win the battle that rewarded me with the unique weapon, so maybe crafting material well spent? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Next tier weapons when disassembled give a tiny bit of next tier upgrade materials so it's not a total loss. Also, there a TON of spare upgrade materials in the first area. I ended up with 60-90 of each basic upgrade material and converted them all to next tier materials.

Unsurprisingly I suck at melee combat, but I got my first bow, baby. Had a hilarious moment when I shot down the fire thingy. Garryck caught on fire and stood there burning for a while. Fortunately he regens quickly.

Speaking of which, are there any campsites where you can regain health?

You'll unlock several camp sites as you explore. You can either walk up and activate them or fast travel to them from anywhere on the map.

and at those campsites you can turn the food items and herbs you've picked up into better healing/buffing items so you don't need the campsites as often. Though I haven't noticed any downside to using the party camps. They even give you the option when leaving them to exit at that location or back to wherever you fast travelled from.

Of course I had to cheese the first boss battle:
Spoiler:
The infected guy. While backing off with my bow I discovered he would not follow me into the water. So I waited until my companions had him distracted and popped a few headshots. Back off, rinse and repeat. My companions died a few times but they got over it.
I have a feeling this will be my MO going forward.

Oh yeah! I won an Arquebus in a (cowardly) duel for some serious damage. Now with hiding in the grass for stealth, camping, worthwhile exploring, and saving after every kill, I am officially loving this game.

Correct. Avowed was developed as Project Alabama. So far as I know, Obsidian has always used states' names for their in-development projects.

I finally got around to playing a longer session this morning and I'm really enjoying it. I started out as a wizard, but I was getting frustrated with the combat so I switched to Ranger and I'm now having a lot more fun. Picking things off from a distance is much more my playstyle, and playing magic users has always made me feel out of my element (no pun intended).

I was trying to put my finger on this "old school" vibe I was getting from the game, but I couldn't quite place it. Then it hit me. It felt like if someone had made a Might & Magic MMO, or if Elder Scrolls and M&M had a baby. Something about the first-person + the art style.

The MMO feel comes from the excellent exploration. It feels like there are little surprises and pockets of enemies tucked away everywhere.

Anyway, I'm still VERY early in, but it's got its hooks in me.

My original intention was to go full Harry Potter (scholar background, specializing in wands and tomes), but I ended up preferring sword-and-board for melee and am liking the arquebus for ranged combat. However I'm still putting all of my ability points into wizard spells.

But I hear that dual pistols is really fun...

This is me. I am in the third area and having a blast. I basically never use the sword unless there are spider webs or boards to be destroyed/burned away. Even at close range I am using the rifle. I have like -35% reload speed so it doesn't feel nearly as slow. I tried going back to bow to be stealthier, but it's so weak. :P

I saved up enough scratch to buy a fine Arquebus, and boy am I glad I did. Can take out most enemies with one punch. Can anyone tell me about the thick rock barriers with a little symbol on them? I have tried (low level) four elements and shooting them. Am I missing something?

That's the one.

There are a few barrier types that you can use throwables to get past. So far I have seen
Spoiler:
the stone that take grenades, grates that take ice and webs that take fire.
I assume magic could be used for some of these a well, but I don't really do magic. That's my companions job.

Now we're cooking. I got the full totem stat increase item installed in camp. Plus I got my second companion (Marius). He is supposed to help me track my killer. But I figure he will leave after that, so in a tried and true tradition, we will do anything but that until everything else is exhausted. Good times.
