Re: Republican campaign staff crime wave! (latest 2/21)
DC Police found enough evidence to charge a sitting GOP Congressman (FL-R) with assault.
In DC, the US Atty's office handles both Federal and local crimes. Trump's newly appointed acting US Atty is refusing to sign the warrant.
Put bluntly, "The Trump Justice Department is declining to prosecute a sitting Republican Congressman who was referred to them by the DC police for beating a woman."

If I'm reading some of the reports on this correctly, hasn't the woman (who is NOT his wife, that's for sure) stated that nothing happened? He's still a cheating shithead, most likely. But I'm wondering if he's an abusive, cheating shithead who's frightened his mistress into lying, or if he's just a cheating shithead who got caught cheating.
In both scenarios though, that makes him the perfect Trumper.

She has retracted her story, but the police believe they have evidence that it happened.hepcat wrote: Tue Feb 25, 2025 2:05 pm If I'm reading some of the reports on this correctly, hasn't the woman (who is NOT his wife, that's for sure) stated that nothing happened? It is relevant context that the GOP House majority is razor thin, such that a few absences / special elections defeats could plausibly flip the chamber before 2026.

They are looking for criminal charges for abuse, right? They don't need the victim to cooperate (although it certainly makes things more challenging).

I assumed that they would need someone to press charges.stessier wrote: Wed Feb 26, 2025 10:10 amUnagi wrote: Wed Feb 26, 2025 9:19 amStanding ?Holman wrote: Tue Feb 25, 2025 2:11 pmShe has retracted her story, but the police believe they have evidence that it happened.hepcat wrote: Tue Feb 25, 2025 2:05 pm If I'm reading some of the reports on this correctly, hasn't the woman (who is NOT his wife, that's for sure) stated that nothing happened? Individuals don't press criminal charges. DA's offices do - "the people". The whole "do you want to press charges" thing you see in TV shows is misleading.Unagi wrote: Wed Feb 26, 2025 11:06 amI assumed that they would need someone to press charges.stessier wrote: Wed Feb 26, 2025 10:10 amUnagi wrote: Wed Feb 26, 2025 9:19 amStanding ?Holman wrote: Tue Feb 25, 2025 2:11 pmShe has retracted her story, but the police believe they have evidence that it happened.hepcat wrote: Tue Feb 25, 2025 2:05 pm If I'm reading some of the reports on this correctly, hasn't the woman (who is NOT his wife, that's for sure) stated that nothing happened? For lesser crimes or non-violent perpetrators who don't pose a threat to the community, prosecutors may not bother. But yeah, a victim pressing charges isn't required. If it were, no one would ever be charged with murder, right?gilraen wrote: Wed Feb 26, 2025 12:24 pmIndividuals don't press criminal charges. DA's offices do - "the people". They are looking for criminal charges for abuse, right? They don't need the victim to cooperate (although it certainly makes things more challenging).
In this case, if the victim says it never happened (rather than just declining to press charges) it may be difficult to proceed without overwhelming evidence that a crime occurred.
