From what I recall, the release of the Horizons DLC was similarly disappointing and buggy, though from what I have seen and read about the Odyssey release, it does seem to be in a significantly worse state. Frontier Developments has seemingly always had a checkered history of botched releases with each major patch. Suffice to say, I have not rushed out to purchase the Odyssey DLC, and am more than to content to hold off until the kinks are hopefully sufficiently worked out.Holman wrote: Fri May 21, 2021 9:10 am Has anyone tried the Odyssey DLC (which lets you get out and walk around and even fight FPS-style)?
It appears the launch has been rough, with lots of lag and crashes and "mostly negative" ratings on Steam.
I'm sure they'll fix it eventually.

I've already downloaded it (and the first patch).
I have not yet played it; I'm waiting for the dust to settle out and for FD to clear up all the performance issues that should have been expected due to suck a quick transition from alpha to release.
I've actually been on a hiatus from ED for the last several months, after playing with few breaks since release. I've got plenty of other things to do with my diminished free time, notably MSFS and Cyberpunk. Even CK3, which I adore, has gotten scant attention from me lately.

Re: Elite: Dangerous
I haven't fired up Elite: Dangerous in years and haven't been following the game to any extent either, so I was surprised to hear that Frontier is still actively developing new features. In a lot of ways this is sort of the polar opposite of Star Citizen -- the initial kickstarter campaign for ED was pretty low-key, but they did release the game more or less on schedule and a decade later they're still going at it (alongside a variety of other projects). I backed it at whatever level included all subsequent expansions, so I really should dust off my HOTAS and find some time to play it again. Eventually...

I used to be able to dock at a fast clip on the C64 Elite using a big red Wilco joystick. Sync up the rotation and you could blast in more quickly, without crashing. Took a lot of practice.

I was crazy about Elite back in the day. I actually went and bought a C64 after I already had my Amiga 500 just to play Elite and Autoduel, because I had no idea when or even if they'd be ported to the Amiga.

Re: Elite: Dangerous
I'm not sure "still" is the right word there. For a while it seemed to me like FD had abandoned new development on the game, or at least made it a lower priority while they pursued other more interesting/profitable things.Max Peck wrote: Wed Oct 30, 2024 5:57 pm I haven't fired up Elite: Dangerous in years and haven't been following the game to any extent either, so I was surprised to hear that Frontier is still actively developing new features.
Apparently some of those other things (IIRC Jurassic World 2, F1 Manager(s), Warhammer) did not generate the revenue that FD expected. Now they've "rediscovered" E:D and have recently started to release new content, like 4 new ships, Power Play 2, and this.
At least that's my take on it.

"Still"... "Again"... Either works, I guess.
Like I said, I haven't been following them all that closely and was surprised that more stuff is in the pipeline.

Re: Elite: Dangerous
I just recently got interested in playing a space game again, so I re-installed Elite Dangerous and added the Odyssey DLC (the only DLC I didn't have before).
I last played in 2021. I was surprised to find my old character and upgraded ship still waiting for me. Is there any reason I can't just pick up from there? Will my old save perfectly adapt to a couple of years of upgrades and Odyssey?

I really want to try this in VR, but don’t really have a room setup that’s conducive to hooking a VR headset up to my gaming PC. Might need to figure that out…

If it's a Quest variant you can go wireless.

Re: Elite: Dangerous
Yeah elite has recently had a little bit more attention paid to it since Odyssey release with a big thargoid story arc and new ships. I've been only playing last 4-5 years with my dad (74) as an evening thing, but i have about 5000 hours according to Steam. he plays a lot more as he's retired. I look forward ot the next stage with system colonisation and base building. I think it could really boost it up again.

Re: Elite: Dangerous
Thanks, I didn't know that. I have a Quest 3, but have never really looked into if/how to get it connected to my PC. Partly because I'm lazy, and partly because I'd have to pry it from the kid's hands to ever play it.Punisher wrote: Sun Nov 03, 2024 2:33 pmWhat VR set do you have?Skinypupy wrote: Sun Nov 03, 2024 11:03 am I really want to try this in VR, but don’t really have a room setup that’s conducive to hooking a VR headset up to my gaming PC. So big release today of the colonisation features. You can now build your own space stations and ground bases in unoccupied systems. Lots of bug fixes and the new mandalay ship available for purchase.

As Max Peck and Unagi observe above, I already addressed this directly within the second sentence of my response to your original question in the Video Games Randomness thread.Daehawk wrote: Sun Mar 02, 2025 2:02 pm is this playable just fine wit ha KB and mouse or is it more suited for a KB and joystick?
However, I thought I'd check to see if you had previously posted within this thread, and indeed you did. So, I've included those earlier responses below for your benefit:
Daehawk wrote: Wed Jan 14, 2015 9:36 pm Doing the tutorials again. One the first combat one against a shieldless ship it took real time of 23 minutes for me to hit and kill it. i kept swinging wildly past it and would only get a hit sometimes. A lot of the time I'd be jus ta hair off and have my stick waaaay over and it would not get onto target then all of a sudden Id roll WAAAay past him. I could keep on him and keep him in front of me but could not keep the crosshairs on him.
Im still trying to get used to this stick and roll instead of twist rolling. I may not be able to do it. That would ruin an otherwise great game I see in front of me. I want to play so bad. I dread having to fight the guy with shields...or two of the enemies. Hope I can p[ass these tutorials. But man Im tired after that battle. Seriously in my arms and neck Im give out.
Daehawk wrote: Wed Jan 14, 2015 9:43 pm Ok battle with the 2 shielded ships so far......flipping battle over and over. I speed up...slow down...and simply loop loop loop. I have one in front of me and shoot him till shields drop then by then he zooms over me even though Ive slowed and am looping up....by the time I loop over he is again looped and behind me. I hardly see them as Im looping around. They loop faster. If I slow too much I loop slower...if I speed up I loop slower...seems to be a sweet spot in the middle of the throttle but even then Im slower than them.
EDIT: Got them both in 15 sec by diving instead of climbing then throttle to zero and sat still and finally got missile locks.
To put it bluntly, based on your thoughts and experiences playing this when you were a decade younger (Daehawk wrote: Thu Jan 15, 2015 12:37 am Ya I gave up and stepped away before breaking something. I just cannot aim.

Re: Elite: Dangerous
Something that I've wished for but which will never happen is that Frontier would release a "remastered" version of the original Elite based on the ED engine (minus the galaxy simulation). My head canon is that it would serve as a demo that shows off the graphics with greatly simplified gameplay and would be presented as an "in-game" training simulator.

Id like a modern Space Rogue or perhaps even more Sundog.
Someone was working on a game that gave me Sundog vibes years ago but nothing came of it..Northstar or something.

Re: Elite: Dangerous
Northstar was being developed by Kerberos, but I haven't heard anything about it for at least a decade or more. Given the sort of games they've released since the SotS2 fiasco, I doubt that they have it in them to ever make the game they envisioned when Northstar was first announced. Sure they're (nominally*) the studio that made Sword of the Stars, but they're also (nominally) the studio that made Fort Zombie.
* I have no idea how many of the people that made SotS are still there.
