I *really* hope they can do it justice.Apple TV+ has ordered a series adaptation of the William Gibson novel “Neuromancer,” Variety has learned.
The 10-episode series hails from co-creators Graham Roland and JD Dillard. Roland will also serve as showrunner, while Dillard will direct the pilot.
Per the official logline, the series “will follow a damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high stakes crime with his partner Molly, a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes, aiming to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets.”
“We’re incredibly excited to be bringing this iconic property to Apple TV+,” said Roland and Dillard in a joint statement. “Since we became friends nearly ten years ago, we’ve looked for something to team up on, so this collaboration marks a dream come true. Neuromancer has inspired so much of the science fiction that’s come after it and we’re looking forward to bringing television audiences into Gibson’s definitive ‘cyberpunk’ world.”

Will it ever go to another service? If so, I'm in. If not, maybe.

Re: Neuromancer coming from Apple TV
If anyone can do it justice, it would probably be apple - they are doing very well with their SF series thus far - quality writing and acting.
Fingers crossed, because I remember the first time I read it, I had to constantly re-read sections and eventually the entire book it was so complex and new.

It's what they used to call a "miniseries."
As far as I can tell, they're filming the novel itself, not opening up an "extended Neuromancer universe" with new stories (although that might happen anyway).

I doubt it. AFAIK Apple doesn’t shop out their original content like some (most?) others do.Jaymann wrote: Wed Feb 28, 2024 5:14 pm Will it ever go to another service? If so, I'm in. If not, maybe.

Re: Neuromancer coming from Apple TV
William Gibson was online saying that he is involved in the project, but it is not "his" project.
He's being consulted, and he gets to read all the scripts and make suggestions, but he's not the show-runner.
(This doesn't rule out that he might write some of those scripts. He has done screenwriting before.)

I recently tried to install the Apple TV app on my Android and got rebuffed. Apple really doesn't like playing well with others, so...I'd be highly confident that it's never going to be elsewhere.Carpet_pissr wrote: Wed Feb 28, 2024 7:37 pmI doubt it. So trying to download an app is piracy?

I mean, there are two direct sequel books that can be mined without needing to write "new stories".Holman wrote: Wed Feb 28, 2024 6:43 pmIt's what they used to call a "miniseries."

Re: Neuromancer coming from Apple TV
No, he's saying that if Apple makes it harder to find their products (e.g., making it harder to download their apps, not licensing shows to other platforms, etc.), people will resort to piracy.

Re: Neuromancer coming from Apple TV
No. Failing to provide a functional app for customers using non-Apple hardware seems like a recipe for encouragement of piracy.

That makes sense. If I were to sign up for A-TV it would be on my TV, not my phone (though it is an i-phone, hmm).

Re: Neuromancer coming from Apple TV
I did temporarily forget about the sequels, but I would guess that the initial 10 episodes (even if they get renewed for a next season) will just cover NEUROMANCER. There's a lot of plot in that book.Pyperkub wrote: Thu Feb 29, 2024 12:27 pm don't forget that there are 2 sequels - Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive.

Re: Neuromancer coming from Apple TV
speaking of Wm. Gibson (i said this elsewhere): kinda too bad about _The Peripheral_, but there was soooo much padding and ... nonsense additions that were being thrown in that i stopped caring. _Agency_ would make a good series; hope that happens.Holman wrote: Thu Feb 29, 2024 7:06 pmI did temporarily forget about the sequels, but I would guess that the initial 10 episodes (even if they get renewed for a next season) will just cover NEUROMANCER. They offer constant promotions. I’ve never paid for Apple TV+ and have probably had it for 12 months (not consecutive) at least.Pyperkub wrote: Sat Mar 02, 2024 2:59 pmThat won't get you neuromancer thoCarpet_pissr wrote:FYI: free access to Apple TV+ for a couple months:

Neuromancer: Peter Sarsgaard Cast as Major Villain in Apple Series
Sarsgaard will appear alongside previously announced cast members Callum Turner, Briana Middleton, Mark Strong, Joseph Lee, and Cleménce Poésy in the 10-episode drama. Turner plays Case, and Middleton plays mirrorshaded street samurai Molly. Mark Strong plays Armitage – Case and Molly's mysterious ex-military employer – and Joseph Lee plays Hideo, a professional bodyguard.
It's almost as if people are the problem.
