[TV] Daryl Dixon (Walking Dead spinoff)

Post by rittchard »

I've never been a huge fan of Daryl but apparently he has/had a big following in the Walking Dead fanbase. With the main series over and Fear the Walking Dead ending, you might have thought the franchise is ready to retire. But they seem to be barreling ahead with plans, Dead City (Maggie and Megan) aired a few months ago and the Rick and Michonne series I think will come out next year.

Only the premiere episode has aired thus far, and finds Daryl floating his way to France. This allows kind of a fresh reboot without too much baggage from the series, and this turns out to be a really good thing. Sure, fans of the series are wondering how any of this might tie in to the main world and whether Daryl will ever get back to the US and rejoin Rick or Judith or Carol. But in the mean time, he's making his way around France, killing zombies, getting innocent people killed, and of course killing bad guys himself.

I was pretty disappointed with Dead City and I am a huge Maggie fan, so I had fairly low expectations for this series. But it surprised me for the most part and introduced enough interesting things to make me want to give it a thumbs up and mention here.

Anyone else watching? I'd say whatever your status is with TWD in general, it's at least worth giving the first episode a chance.

Nah, I felt like they already milked that cow for more than it was worth. Not really interested in the further adventures of _____.

Same. I can't remember when I bailed on TWD. I read the full run of the comic but didn't find the show nearly as compelling after the second or third time they made it seem like a character died and took it back. Fear the Walking Dead lost me much more quickly.

The first season of TWD was amazing. Sometimes one and done is enough.

How does one "float to France" from the east coast of the United States? :?

I guess I'll have to watch to find out.

They milked this franchise for every ounce they can get but they have no other ideas so they just keep going back to TWD. My guess is that the writers and producers are the same ones who screwed up TWD so badly so I have little motivation to subscribe to yet another streaming channel to watch it. Maybe when it's available on Netflix or Max.

Looks like they're live streaming a Joe Bob Briggs special tonight on Shudder for this. I actually will watch it now.

My assumption is that he either stowed away on a ship heading there or was kidnapped by a ship heading there.
Or he overinflated his tires and rode his bike there.

A quick googling suggest upturned rowboat/sailboat/launch/thing. I mean, I guess if you ended up in the gulf stream, and then the wind was just right at the right times...

Sorry I didn't keep up with this thread (work got really busy ugh), though it seems like there's been little interest.

Short version: the conclusion was pretty good and overall I'd give the series a thumbs up. Much much better than the Maggie/Negan show. Season 2 bringing back Carol will be a welcome addition. Daryl is a good character but inherently he's kind of a mumbler so it's hard for him to carry an entire series alone. They added some decent characters to this show, but having Carol to play off of will definitely pick things up a notch or two.

Now to dig up my Fear thread!

I made it through the first episode after Joe Bob Briggs hosted a showing of it on Shudder. I had no desire to go back to it.

I've watched nothing, but I still want to know how Darryl got from (what, Georgia? the Carolinas?) to France in a Walking Dead world.

Maybe just claim that plate tectonics are also subject to zombie reanimation and acceleration?

I mean, that would work, right?

Alexandria is relatively close to Washington DC - remember a lot of the early seasons they were heading that way because Eugene lied to them. So anyway I guess it’s close enough to an ocean outlet, he gets kidnapped and put on a boat to France.

Also, they made a big deal out of Daryl finding those water wings in the final episode of TWD.

I was feeling generous so I tried to watch it last night on the Netflix. Made it 30 minutes into the first episode and gave up. The magic...it's gone.

It just feels like a chore to watch yet another tale told in the world of WD. And I think that's because they've worn out their welcome by telling the same story over and over and over again. They either need to go away for a decade and come back when folks are feeling nostalgic, or they need to think outside the box and do something really fresh and new.

The last WD show we watched was the Rick + Michone series. I thought it was pretty bad.

They just all have the same damn story. Our heroes meet up with a power hungry group/leader, have to fight them, then they enjoy a light lunch. There is no deviation from that in ANY of the spin offs either.

Yeah that might have been it for me. I can't spoiler a show that's almost a year old, right?

Upon arrival he discovers new friends and helps them against people that were bad. Or were they? Now his new friends are double crossing him! Surprise!

This was in the first 15 minutes. Like I get it, people are the problem in the Walking Dead universe - even in France.

What they NEED to do is make an entry told entirely from the zombie's point of view. He gets up, realizes he's at the bottom of an incline, spends 8 episodes trying to get up the incline, realizes in episode 9 he can turn around and go the other direction, etc..

It would certainly be more exciting than anything Fear the Walking Dead did.

I got bored and watched the first half of S1e1.

Aside from whatever it does to the TWD world, it's just a mishmash of How Americans Imagine France:

Focus on food? Mention of the WW2 relationship right away? Frickin DRESSED UP NUNS SINGING??

I was bored and watched it on netflix/AMC plus. It was a chore. I usually just had it on while I was reading or playing a game on my iPad. Otherwise I would never have finished it. It's just...not good.
