23 and Me Bankrupcy and Protecting Your Data

Post by LordMortis »

I know there have been more than a few here who were tracking ancestry and using sites like this. Posting now before time goes by and this ends up in the data breach thread instead.

From the NYT via FB
The popular DNA test kit company 23andMe announced Sunday that it has filed for bankruptcy and is looking for a buyer. And while the company has promised to continue protecting customer data amidst a possible sale, Wirecutter’s tech experts think you should delete your data now.

Deleted my data/account yesterday. Although this isn't the first time 23andMe had restructured or handled breaches, so I assume that a lot of my data is out there anyway. But still, it's different knowing that someone may literally end up buying people's DNA samples.
