Need something that will burn some hours, but I dont' want to pay $50 or more - anything a bit older that you'd recommend? I'm not looking for Baldur's Gate II, but a solid storyline would be nice...
Thanks...

....Tough to give advice without knowing what you have played and what you are looking for.
For the money, Morrowind is a spectacular value. I simply can't imagine finishing everything in Morrowind.
Fallout, Torment, Fallout2???
System Shock, System Shock2, Deus Ex???
Heck people like Temple of Elemental Evil and Arcanum.

Agree, hard to recommend w/l knowing personal taste & history. Most (all?) of those games are budget so there's little chance of "I spent $50 on this?" happening. Morrowind is a bargain, esp the GOTY edition. NWN hasn't fallen in price (that GoGamer sale is a bargain but temporary!) but there are great mods out that make me glad I have it.dfs wrote:....Tough to give advice without knowing what you have played and what you are looking for.

Sorry, let me provide a bit more information....
Played:
Finally, is Guild Wars an online game? I picked up the box and give it the quick once over, but it wasn't really clear just what it was about. I have personal heartburn buying something then paying X dollars a month to use it. No WOW or similar games in my past or future....
Thanks!
Played:
- Planescape Torment
- Both Fallouts
- BG I and II
- Morrowind, though I have to admit that I got a little bored at the end - and the fact that the various house/clan/profession relationships were murky at best did not help matters
- All of the Might and Magic series up through 8 - actually broke my teeth on these...
- Wizardy 8
- Neverwinter Nights - played it, but I'm not much on multi-player. If there are good single player mods available (and they fixed the horrid camera problem!!) I might give this one another go. Think I still have it at home somewhere.
- Icewind Dale I and most of II (kind of got side-tracked and never finished it.
- I'm sure there's more, but you get the idea

Dungeon Siege doesn't have much of a story whatsoever.
Guild Wars isn't a monthly fee MMORPG, and I did enjoy the "single player" question portion of the game. It had a very nifty RPG feel to it.
However, once I realized that the entire point of the game is to gear you for Player versus Player, I immediately lost interest.
While the story is also thin, I did enjoy playing The Temple of Elemental Evil. The detailed combat is fantastic.
I'm assuming you've gone through both Fallouts and Arcanum?

Maybe next year, maybe no go

Played:I saw Dungeon Siege (or DS 2?) at Wal-Mart for $10 last night, wondered about that one. The Gothic games as well - can anyone give me an overview.

Guild Wars in online. However it has no monthly fee (which is why I might buy it). It is also fairly solo friendly.
Gothics are great games and #3 is due out next year. They are 3rd person, single player, no party RRGs but high quality and well reviewed.
And lastly if you broke your teeth on M&M maybe you shouldn't be biting them. They are computer games, not chew toys.

Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative the same night

I never personally had an issue with the camera, but since there was a 3rd party mod to unlock the camera, I guess enough people did[*]Neverwinter Nights - played it, but I'm not much on multi-player. As for the single player modules, there are a LOT of good single player modules, just don't know how many of them will run with just the original game.

I know you asked for a RPG with story, and you got a list of them now. I wanted to send you the other way. If you have any need for a RPG lite. i would try Fate. Its a really nice indie title in the vein of Diablo. you can download a demo for it and try it out. I really enjoy it and play it those times when i only have 20 -30 mins or so to play games.

A search of the modules on Neverwinter Vault shows at least 50 single player modules that don't need the expansions, 20 with a 9+ score. That includes some very good modules: the Penultimas, Dreamcatcher and Shadowlord series among others. If you've already got NWN they're all free.IceBear wrote:As for the single player modules, there are a LOT of good single player modules, just don't know how many of them will run with just the original game.[*]Neverwinter Nights - played it, but I'm not much on multi-player. Wish I could have linked to the search results but it hides the search string. The link above goes directly to the search page. What I picked was What Version? = "All NWN / No SoU / No HotU / No CEP", I set the Rating = "7.00" or "9.00" and Single or Multiplayer = "Single Player" or "Single or Multiplayer" (I think these two may give different results).

One more, I see Walmart has Vampire: Bloodlines for $12.77 (link). I don't know if that's only online or an in-store price as well. Worth checking out.

If you liked the BG and IWD style of play you might really enjoy Temple of Elemental Evil. The story, well... there IS a story, sort of, and good interactions w/ people, but the main draw is an absolutely oustanding turn based combat system. It also has pretty tasty visuals.
Might be well worth a look if you can pick it up on the cheap.
Another great game I (surprisingly) haven't seen mentioned in this thread is Knights of the Old Republic. Different than the RPGs you described in setting, but one of the most fun and satisfying RPG's I've ever played. Story out the ass, great combat, great visuals... total package.
Not sure what you would have to pay for it, but you could probably trade for it. The only RPG I've ever played twice, and the only game I've ever finished and restarted without getting up from the desk. (And no, I didn't do the whole thing in one session... I'm just sayin').

Kratz, I've played KOTOR three times - waiting for KOTOR 2 to come down in price a bit. Unfortunately, it seems like being the bad guy is much more fun in KOTOR
I wish it would've been possible to really get into the evil part of it - take over the Sith Academy, for example. As it stands, the only thing that really separates "good" from "evil" is how you kill the bad guys and how much whining Carth does. Reason enough to kill that wuss-boy...

Ok, well if you want to actually play the game instead of read about it Best Buy has it for $29.99 (game link this time). I'm surprised this hasn't come down more by now.
