Help me find this strange game/screensaver/app

Post by AttAdude »

My little sister saw some strange thing on a doctors computer recently. She describes it as a little orange dog that runs around on the desktop. She says it ran around tearing up files and other strange things. I looked at 2 games by Ubisoft called Dogz and Catz, these seemed to be close to what she is talking about but the SSs i saw showed them in a full windowed app not running around on the desktop. Anyone have any idea what the hell mandy is talking about, and or how to find this thing for her computer?

It's not Dogz or Catz. Those are "creatures" type games/apps. What you're talking about sounds like a screensaver only. What kind of computer was it, PC or Mac? A friend of mine had a Mac with a suite of screensavers that did similar things (a robot would shoot up the screen, attack files, etc).

It was a PC. Im not 100% sure that the proggie is a saver. According to my sister the dog was in the way while the Dr was using the computer so he tossed a stick across the desktop to get it out of the way. Im sure it has a saver component to it, but it sounds more to me like one of those virtual assistant type thingies.

Maybe poke around the seedy underworld of "virtual pets" and "virtual dogs" that comes up with a Google search.

Yeah i suppose thats what im gonna have to do. At least im doing it at work so if something blows up and releases spyware and virus shrapnel its not my computer that eats it.

I pretty sure that’s a screensaver called bad dog put out by Afterdark. I remember having it on my system a long long time ago.

I don't mean to be a smartass, but how about calling the doctor's office and asking?

Actually I think it is Dogz (or one of the sequels) especially if he could interact with the animal. Later versions gave you the ability to pick your dog and train it.

Except this "interacted" with the desktop like a screensaver. Dogz is self contained and runs full screen or windowed. The dogz can't walk over to your "My Computer" icon and attack it. It's like Dogz Desktop or something.

Yeah and to my little sister that the important part. The dog attacked a file folder and little papers flew all over the place. Ive had no luck finding it tho. Cured some spyware lol, but no little file attacking dog. :(

My girlfriend has an early version of "Catz" (Catz 2 I think), and it does indeed have a screen saver. The cats will run around and interact with each other. And you can 'paint' the cats to give them a unique color and markings or make them look like your own cats.

And they'll run around on the desktop (I think) in a different mode, but won't interact with anything on the desktop. You can pick 'em up with your cursor and drop them. That part is kinda pointless, but the training, feeding, and playing parts are actually fun in a brainless sort of way.

Yeah I dont think its a screen saver. I remember reading about something like this a few years ago. You'd adopt a dog and it lived on your desktop. It would run around on its own and stuff. You could play with it or feed it or whatever. If you ignored it it would do naughty stuff like bark or attack your folders and stuff.

Right now though i cant find that on the web at all.
