Wow, I was playing D&D a bit more than 25 years ago but I don't remember plastic figures. Maybe it was a limited edition bag of figures.
Of course, that was when the D&D manual was (as I recall) a smallish 1 softbound booklet w/a picture of a Beholder on the front. Back then, the DM I played with didn't think he was doing a proper job unless he succeeded in killing all players-usually the same night you rolled up your character. In retrospect, I'm not sure why we played.
