Saw this on Blues, and thought it was pretty cool. Especially since it claims to know where the term "Easter Egg" came from.
According to Wikipedia, the name Easter egg comes from Dan O'Bannon's horror spoof, Return of the Living Dead. In the film, a container of zombies goes missing and is referred to--in code--as an "Easter egg."
I actually remember being in an arcade and seeing someone unlock the Reptile Easter Egg. I couldn't have been more surprised if I woke up with my head sewn to the carpet.
I also remember the DOOM Easter Egg as well, along with the dead space marine in the Duke Nukem game.
I'm surprised they didn't list the fish and teddy bear crates from BF2. That one surprised me.
That was an interesting article. I might have to try the WoW chicken quest now.
The easter egg I always remember is from the original Super Mario Brothers for the NES. On level 1-2 (I think), if you jumped just right near the end of the level, you could walk through the wall to an area with three pipes. Each pipe would take you to a much higher level. It was hard as hell to get the jump right, though.
In Thief2 there was a level where, if you tossed a viewing orb (the thing that allows you to see the area around the orb) over the wall you could watch a couple of zombies dancing.

"Not only is Final Fantasy Tactics one of the greatest games of all time, but it also features one of the greatest Easter eggs of all time: Cloud Strife, the hero of Square's remarkably popular Final Fantasy VII, is a hidden, playable character. He comes equipped with his trademark buster sword and limit break special moves from FFVII. Finding Cloud, and getting him to join you, was a convoluted process, to say the least, but word of his presence in the game quickly spread--even as many fans of Final Fantasy Tactics continued to believe that this hidden character was a hoax. For good measure, and as part of the process of getting Cloud to join your party, Ramza has a run-in with a girl who looks identical to Final Fantasy VII's Aeris. These cameo appearances helped solidify Final Fantasy Tactics' reputation as a genuine Final Fantasy game, since everything else about it is so different from the series' conventions."

I liked the hidden dead Commander Keens hanging on the wall at the end of one of the Doom games. I think it was the original Doom Ep. 3, the final mission where you fight the Cyberdemon.
When the sun goes out, we'll have eight minutes to live.
I still remember Crusader: No Regret, playing it on Christmas. The entire front end graphics changed to Christmassy colors, Christmas tunes played instead of the regular music, etc.

One of my life's greatest accomplishments was getting to Noob Saibot in Mortal Kombat 2... in the arcade.
It took almost 3 hours. One quarter. 50 human opponents. 50 wins in a row.
At the time I was a legend at my arcade. Nobody cares anymore. Sigh, fickle is fame..

I think we first heard of it in a gaming magazine, but monkeying around with that "dot" (and the magnet, and the bridge, and the "sword", and the ...) was no end of fun.

Don't forget the energizer bunny in the basement bar just over the bridge in canal town in Star Wars Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2.
Always good for a lafff.
Thanx for the Egg Site your Smooveness, I really needed that.
In Interstate 76, when driving the bus, you'd hear screams and yells coming from the back of the bus. If you turned the camera around, you got to see the entire development crew sitting there.
Of course there is the Easter Egg "Easter Egg" in GTA VC. There are tons of others in the GTA series, those crazy rockstars.

I liked the whole secret mission in Starcraft:Broodwar, been anticipating a sequel based on that level alone since I first played it. Hydralist in Warcraft III was pretty neat too.
In Counter-Strike there is a spot in the Office level where you could shoot the wall and there was a picture of a bunny rabbit... but I think everyone knows about that one =)

Now someone correct my memory but didn't Ultima 5 have a Kilrathi spaceship that had crashed into a farmer's field? Or was it 7? Damn, someone help me here.
You do not take from this universe. It grants you what it will.
The training mission in Thief included a basketball court and basket.
On a certain difficulty setting, Cragscleft Prison (in the same game) includes a long waterslide. (Not actually an easter egg-- just an unexpected variation in the map. Similarly, the level Assassins includes an additional chase through the City on a certain difficulty setting if a particular trigger is tripped.)
In the Gold version, Constantine's mansion includes an extra realm, Little Big World, where Garrett's about the size of a cockroach.
Also in the Gold version is a reworked version of Bafford's manor filled with examples of model and coding bloopers encountered during development of the game.

It was 7.

I'm going to go on record as saying that Wikipedia is full of crap. I would suggest that the term 'easter egg' comes not from a B horror movie but, rather, from ...wait for it...easter eggs. Easter eggs on easter-hidden eggs with candy that you have fun hunting for. Easter eggs in games-hidden jokes that you have fun hunting for.

That part of Constantine's mansion was one of my favorite parts of the game. And the bloopers reel was hilarious.
