Looking for a reference Flight Sim
Nothing makes your vid card beg for mercy like a good flight sim! With that said, I would like to see what my new card can handle, via a new generation flight sim.
The last sim I played was European Air War I believe, which was excellent. But now I am looking for something more recent, and wanted some feedback from board members.
What I see available now is:
Il2 Sturmovik (sp?) looks like I should try this one, but is it showing some age, graphically? Remember, I would like something with a lot of bling bling (as well as great flight model of course!)
Pacific Fighters? Reviews are "meh" at best...not sure I want to plunk down for something that won't grab me like EAW or WWII Fighters (good ol Jane's, sniff)
MS Flight Sim Century of Flight? I like combat, so I have stayed away from this...
MS Combat Flight Sim...3? Is there such a beast, and should I awaken it?
Seems like the flight sim genre is slowly dimming, (hope not) so if you know of great titles to consider that you don't see here, please let me know.

Pacific Fighters id great. Personally, I'd splurge and get IL2 Gold and PAcific fighters and put em both together for one massive WWII orgy.Carpet_pissr wrote:Nothing makes your vid card beg for mercy like a good flight sim! That said, if you really want to crush your system, Lock On: Modern Air Combat (LOMAC) is the only way to go.

That is pretty much the best deal in town for survey sims. Also, IL-2 FB Gold is also highly recommended since you can install both FB and PF together. Other good survey sims include Jane's Fighter's Anthology, Jane's USAF, Jane's WWII Fighters, and Rowan's Mig Alley. I personally didn't like LOMAC at all, but it's decent, especially for free. Good luck!Gromit wrote:Look here under Latest News.
If you buy PF, they 'll throw in LOMAC for free. Can't really beat that.

Pacific Fighters.
The only reason it is getting so-so marks is because people say it isn't different enough from Il-2, which is like saying the blow job isn't different enough from the oral sex...
Great game, just takes Il-2 to a new level and certainly ups the graphics considerably... and you won't be plowing through crappy documentation to figure out the 1000 keys you need in LOMAC.

Thanks - that's all I need to know...(and a little moreKratz wrote:Pacific Fighters.

Generally I think the mainstream review sites also don't appreciate flight sims, so it's hard to gauge from reviews whether one is good or not.
I even saw a review for LOMAC or PF can't remember which, started out: "Let me say upfront that I don't like flight simulators." What the?!?! Well, then STOP WRITING NOW YOU MORON - your obvious bias against the genre is going to screw up any objectivity! And of course, the score was abysmal at the end.
So to conclude - yes to Pacific Fighters, but no to LOMAC? Anybody else want to weigh in?
I am def getting PF at this point, just want to know if it's worth the extra cabbage to get the bundle of both, since I am only running an AMD 2500 (overclocked though). Gig ram, 6800OC vid card...ram and vid card probably ok, but that processor might get choked up on LOMAC from what I have read about it.
Let me hiijack my own thread and also reminisce about a jet sim from yesteryear - EF2000 - anyone remember that one/played it? FARGIN AWESOME if you ask me. (I believe that was right around the time that the first dedicated 3d chips became available, a la Monster 3D)

No, it'll run fine. I have an Athlon 2000+ and a GF FX5900OC and LOMAC runs really well and looks fantastic. There might be an occasional hiccup where things slow down a bit, but for the most part I'm getting a nice 30+ fps.Carpet_pissr wrote:I am def getting PF at this point, just want to know if it's worth the extra cabbage to get the bundle of both, since I am only running an AMD 2500 (overclocked though). That was fantastic. I wasn't even going to read this thread, and now I bought two new games to add to my backlog.Gromit wrote:Look here under Latest News.

I was going to come in to recommend IL-2, or the subsequent Pacific Fighters (which I haven't played yet, but heard good things about). I have more of a hankerin' for modern jets though - so was pleasantly surprised that UbiSoft let me pick them both up for $40. Sweet.
Thanks for the tip.

Get down on their knees and pray

Make up bags of change
But the monkey in the corner
Well he's slowly drifting out of range

OK, I am looking at options for getting Il2 together with the needed expansions to be able to merge all - there are a LOT of versions out there!
There's the original Il2 standalone, there's some expansion called Combat Over Europe (1 AND 2 believe it or not), there's the Aces expansion, there's the Forgotten Battles expansion, and then you have the Gold edition which combines all of the above EXCEPT the Combat over Europe addons and the original Il-2, I think. Sheesh.
So if I buy the Gold Pack, which is a standalone product as I understand it, what am I missing by not having the original Il-2, and will that affect the combining with PF?
