2004 Was a Great Year for Gamers

By MATT SLAGLE, AP Technology Writer

Picking the year's best and worst video games can be a lot harder than playing them. 2004 was a great year for gamers, with some of the most anticipated games of all time being released.
Top-5 list includes GTA:SA, including "Is it violent? Yes. Should children play it? Certainly not. For everyone else, it's an excellent game, packed with enough detail and action to keep you playing for months."

Good stuff in here. We so often give those who make wild claims the attention they're craving, I think the other side of the (mainstream) coin deserves its share of the attention, too.

Meanwhile, in Illinois, our governor is on a crusade to have GTA advertising banned from the public eye.

Hey Jeff, I didn't know you are based out of Illinois. Yes our govenor is a ponce for many reasons. The traffic reporter for the trib also ripped the cta for the gta ads calling the game "reprehensible". I'm quite sure he has never played 5 seconds of it. He gives his email address in the paper so I sent him a long missive on how he's misguided. I wonder if he will have the courage to reply.

Not to mention banning all games with human-on-human violence from ever being sold to minors (going above and beyond game rating system). Depending on how you determine what's violent, this could include football games, hockey games and the Harry Potter series of games (zapping Malfoy with a spell is obviously the first step to going on a shooting spree).

As for the article, it is fairly uncommon to find a non-game industry writer to look beyond the GTA series and see the quality underneath. Also a good call on the Worst 5 list. Things like JFK Reloaded and The Guy Game make the whole industry look bad.
