Airport Extreme in older iMac?

Airport Extreme in older iMac?
I'm looking at a bunch of older (500 Mhz G3, OS 9.1) iMacs at my daughter's school that are speced to take an Airport card. Can they take the Airport Extreme cards as well? Would I need to upgrade the machines to OS X?
