Home Networking Question
My Current Setup
Shared DSL via a Netgear RT314 4 port router using DHCP
1 WinXP Home PC
1 Win98 PC
I want to add a WinXP Pro PC to this setup.
My XP Home and Win98 machines can see each other and the WinXP Pro machine. But the WinXP Pro machine doesn't see the other two PCs.
All three PCs have TCP/IP, Client for MS Network, and File Sharing installed. Same Workgroup name. Different machine names.
The cables are good. The WinXP pro machine is getting an IP and can surf the net.
Any ideas on what to check next?
Thanks.

When you say "Can't see" do you mean they don't show up in the Network Neigborhood or that when you try to search for them across the network k(by computer name) you can't find them?
I go to LAN parties every few months and we always manage to get a network running between various O/Ses - but there's always people that for whatever reason have to search by computer name to be able to see things.

This is a fresh install of XP Pro by the way if that makes any difference.

Then that is why it doesn't work. The firewall blocks everything. If you have a gateway router you could probably turn it off. Otherwise you need to configure it to not block traffic from you local subnet.glr200 wrote:Rip wrote:Have you done SP2? Is the firewall on? In the network properties how many connections are there and what do they say.
I updated to SP2 and the firewall is on.
Where in Network Properties do I check the number of connections?
Thanks.

the firewall included with WinXP does not block connections from within your local network...your PCs should all see each other through the Windows firewall without any special configuration. as far as i can remember, the WinXP firewall only blocks connections to the internet...it doesn't have any effect on your local network. i have it enabled on both my PCs right now and it didn't require any special action for them to see each other.

I think it depends on if you use the network wizard or not. I hate that crap. They just keep dumbing it down, and in the process overcomplicating it.disarm wrote:the firewall included with WinXP does not block connections from within your local network...your PCs should all see each other through the Windows firewall without any special configuration. as far as i can remember, the WinXP firewall only blocks connections to the internet...it doesn't have any effect on your local network. i have it enabled on both my PCs right now and it didn't require any special action for them to see each other.
I usually just use a hardware gateway/firewall and turn the wincrap one off.
