What if you played a game you did voiceovers in?

Post by Jow »

Here's a little blurb from a Gamespot interview of Wil Wheaton. In it he talks quite a bit about gaming. In this blurb, he's talking about playing Ghost Recon 2 using a character he did the voices for in his group. I laughed my ass off contemplating this and figured I'd share this.

WW: Ghost Recon 2. I play David Foster in Ghost Recon 2. It's really a fun game. Squad-based stuff is great. It's a big improvement over the original Ghost Recon. In terms of gameplay, it's just a lot better. What's very, very funny is that in the game, the player plays Capt. Mitchell, this kind of badass guy. David Foster, the character that I created, is one of the ghosts. So I'm off on this mission, as Mitchell, and I'm taking myself, as David Foster, with me. We go through this courtyard, and I think we've cleared this area out. So I say, "Alright, Foster. You take the right flank. I'm going up the middle." So I say to myself, "You got it, Captain. Advancing." And these two enemies jump up out of the grass that I didn't see, and they shoot me, as David Foster. So, I, as David Foster, fall down, and I hear myself in the game going, "Aahhhhhh! I'm hit! I need a medic. I need a medic!" So I go, "Oh, crap!" I drop everything and go running through the line of fire to save myself, and I die. And I hear over the headset, "Foster's down. Foster's down!" And in the middle of the night, at my house, I go, "Nooooooo!" I restarted the game, because I wasn't about to let myself die. I tried to tell this story to my wife, my brother, [and] to a few other people, and they just didn't seem to understand why I thought that was such a big deal.

I wouldn't want to let myself die either, even if I wasn't playing myself as myself but as someone else while myself was actually another.

Good grief, talking about an existential dilemma there.

Wow I never really thought about that, must be strange since throughout the game they are always saying his name. Closest I've ever come was naming the main character in an RPG my name.

There's something about Wil Wheaton that makes me think that if I ever meet him, I'll just kick him right in the jimmy.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

Are you just too damned cool for Wil Wheaton?

I'm not sure I understand the hostility here either.

Seems like an alright enough guy to me.

I'm sure he's a great guy in person and he was just doing his job back in the '80s, but it takes a lot to wash away the foul taste of Wesley from our collective Trek consciousness. Some resentment is inevitable.

I personally never had a problem with Wesley Crusher. It's too bad I never caught Arena while he was still one of the co-hosts.

I wish my mother had named me The Nameless One, so I could have played Planescape Torment and been able to empathize that much more.

My wife gets upset when she hears Kelsey (BG2 mod) die. It doesn't bother me too much, though.
