Maxtor shelves plans for 2.5 inch drive

Post by Rip »

Was a little suprised by this. Especially given that laptop sales are brisl and all use 2.5 drives. Maybe they want to leapfrog to something even smaller?

How many companies are selling drives in that segment right now? (Ten, I think.) Who wants to be eleventh to market ahead of the growth curve?

Not too sure what to think about what this may mean for the company. When Maxtor purchased Quantum back in '01, I'm guessing they were thinking that they'd have broken Seagate's hold on the SCSI market a bit sooner than in '05.

It's possible to overdiversify. Were Maxtor to give up on its desktop product, then I'd be scared (as an employee in that industry *and* as a consumer of desktop hard drives).
