Just because we use cheats.... (CONTRA!)

Post by Eduardo X »

I was just out with a co-worker picking up lunch when she stopped to ask these two guys for a light. They were talking about "that code."
"Probably every guy raised in the 80s knows that code for Contra."
As we walked away, I told Sara "up-up-down-down-left-right-left-right-b-a-start."
She had no idea what I was talking about. She's one of the people who convinced me to get a PS2, and she has no clue!
It made me sad, but it also made me wonder: who doesn't know that code?

I never knew it but never played much of contra except at friends houses since I was NES deprived, though I had a fine C64. I knew there was a code just never memorized it since they would enter it.

I've seen a lot of references to it though lately.

I don't use cheats when playing games unless I am to the point of quitting a game without one. One the rare occassion that I actually do use a cheat to get by, the rest of the game just doesn't feel the same.

I will occasionaly use a walkthrough to help me if I'm stumped on a quest or where to go and such, but tough areas like 'The Race' in Mafia I try my best to just plow through after repeated attempts. (I made it through the race successfuly :) )

In Gradius 3 that code would explode your ship. You had to use L and R triggers instead, iirc.

I only cheat in games where the cheats are something fun and new, like a riot in GTA or something like that.

That more was a Konami code. It worked in other games. Another was down up L R L R B A - I think in Gradius.

A B B A - Ikari Warriors baby! There was no friggin way to beat that game without cheats.

Anybody else beat Zanac? I did. 8) Yes I am Cool! 8)

Pretty sure it was also the code for Teenage Mutant Nija Turtles - The Manhatten Project.

That was probably my favourite game on the nes. Damn, that game rocked.

Computers are quite different from the wonders of the NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM! The whole point of the NES was ENTERTAINMENT! Can you say that about your precious Spectrum?
Do you still have that Spectrum? It seems people are really getting into them these days (according to Retro Gamer Magazine).

I always used "select start" instead of just "start"

Cause I actually had friends to play with. Unlike all you loner losers.

My friend and I beat it three times through without the code one day.

I think our record with the code was ten.

As you may have guessed, we weren't particularly popular with the ladies at this time in our lives

I used the code for a few days, it helps you learn the game when you do not have to restart every 3 lives

After a day or so, I as able to play the game normally without the cheat and complete it. Once I did it on 1 life

What is sad is that when I go back to play old games like that today, I just get absolutely stomped

It shows you how games of yesteryear and games of today require completely different skills to be good at

I just got the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection and I can't beat either game at all.
I used to play on hard! What happened?

Was almost required to finish that last almost impossible level... to explode the damn head in the badly placed hole in the time we could only shoot horizontally...
