Unlike the massively expensive Bon Jovi concert that she can't wait to see next week, she is rather ambivalent towards this one and we might both decide it's not worth dealing with the crowds.
Then come on over to Lisle's Eyes to the Skies.
Pat Travers is playing. WAY better than Styx. Much more manageable crowd.
I'll buy ya a warm Budweiser......lol.
The thing about Styx is my wife knows some of their songs. The thought of warm Budweiser, or cold Budweiser for that matter, is probably good for my diet as it suggests a beer-free evening (and that my wife would like).
Speaking of, Naperville Alefest is in a couple of weeks. Sampling 180 beers in just 4 hours presents quite the logistical challenge.

Our Dallas date was re-scheduled for September 18th. Nothing like a Wednesday night concert to get the juices flowing.

We used to be a weekend town. Nowadays we're a day before of a day after the weekend town as Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, and Pennsylvania all take weekend show precedence over Detroit for most acts.

Given that I work weekend nights, it's perfect for me .
While it's not a concert, I picked up tickets to the Oddball Comedy Festival. It's featuring Dave Chapelle and Flight of the Conchords, along with a whole host of other comedians. Should be a great time .

I saw Sting earlier at Pier Six... hadn't been to the venue and liked it. Small and an intimate, relaxed feel to it. I kept getting beers before the lines got long... but they never did. My wife thought it was just an excuse to get more beer. The performance was very rehearsed but I expected that. Decent mix of old songs, and ... not-quite-so-old songs. (I hear he's has a new album coming out in the fall.)
Tegan & Sara and Fun. coming to Merriweather Post Pavillion later this month. I like both artists, and it's another good venue. And it being a night out from the kids and puppy, I'm looking forward to it.
Taking my wife to see Free Hot Lunch this weekend in Madison. It's one of her favorite groups in the whole world, and they're doing a reunion show.
(And I'm betting nobody else on here had ever heard of Free Hot Lunch. Even though they had some mild popularity with some songs that would show up on Dr. Demento back in the '80s.)

I remember seeing him at Chicago Fest I believe once upon a time, long, long ago. Of course, I was probably stoned at the time, so maybe I just imagined seeing him.
In any case, if it doesn't rain, I think we will try to see Styx. It should be amusing, but probably not as amusing as the last few times I saw Dennis DeYoung play at some smaller suburban festivals. Watching the crowd was more entertaining that watching the stage.

I saw Styx last summer and they were way better than I expected them to be. Lots of energy for a bunch of old guys!
Speaking of old guys, in a few weeks Im going to see Steely Dan at the Fox in Detroit. Ive always been a big Steely Dan fan and I think Walter Becker is one of the most under-rated guitarists in the world. As far as The Fox, what a great place to see a show. Fantastic acoustics and the building itself is gorgeous. Should be a fun show.
Well do you ever get the feeling that the story's too damn real and in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage and it seems like you're the only person sitting in the audience?

Steely Dan is one of those bands that toured constantly in the early 90s, playing $10 shows. I really regret not seeing them then. I just can't see paying big bucks to see them and the window to not do that seems to be closed. There were a shitton of bands doing $10 or free shows every year and I just couldn't be bothered. Joe Walsh, Cheap Trick, Pat Bennetar to name a few more. I really should have made it a point to jump on those nights back then. Of course $10 and the associated expenses meant a lot more to me back then.
Steely Dan, IIRC, spent most of their hit-making years as a studio band, and their songs never seemed to be the stuff of stadium shows (a lounge, maybe). All very good stuff, but I've never felt I was missing out by not seeing them live.
If they were nearby and I had nothing else to do, then yeah, for $10, why not?
So Styx was better than I expected -- they didn't completely go the "greatest hits" route, digging deep into Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight in particular for songs I hadn't heard them perform since they were touring on those albums. The ersatz Dennis DeYoung (a Canadian no less!) did an admirable job singing, although I think he was mostly playing "air keyboards." He wasn't the focus that DeYoung always was...the set they played was heavy on songs that Tommy Shaw and James Young sang. My wife enjoyed it, even though some of the songs that were played constantly in the Philippines (especially Babe) wasn't among the songs played tonight. But I was okay with that...I did not miss Mr. Roboto one bit. There was a good, if not bursting at the seams crowd tonight. Many of the young'uns fled early, giving us some space.
There is about 2 dozen places to buy ribs at Naperville Ribfest and we picked the wrong one. Seriously, I think their ribs were smoked over a tire fire. (insertbarfingsmiley)
To be fair, adolescent power fantasy tripe is way easier to write than absurd existential horror, and every community has got to start somewhere... right?

silverjon wrote:Might maybe possibly go to Big Country tonight, but am also wondering if it's worth the $25/head.
For a 1-hit wonder from the '80's? I'm somewhat surprised they still exist, but I'd think they would be doing the local summer festival circuit like others of their ilk.

I think I lost the lottery, at least in the first round.

M&K are hit or miss for me. The misses are bad enough that they killed the urge to see them, so I've passed on them more times than I can remember in the last five years. I've heard very little of Cults and what I've heard hasn't grabbed me at all. Usually it's the opposite, I hear a bar or two and find that I'm disinterested enough to listen to something else without giving them enough of a chance.
Free is always good, though. You can be bouncy to M&K beer commercial song ("Daylight"?) and then check out whenever you want after that.

So, I had to go looking - they've got some third row tickets available. Only $164 a pop (with Ticketmaster charges). Never seen them before, and they've been in heavy rotation for me recently. I love close up live shows - but not sure I love them that much.

I failed to mention that Ahmir will also be playing at the show who, according to their webpage, is "the most popular R&B artist on Youtube". From what I can gather, Ahmir takes crappy popular songs and Boys II Men them. So there's that.

You can go a bit further back in the lower bowl for about half that and still get excellent seats. The Fox a lot more intimate than your basic arena. Im around 26 rows back and paid around $90 a seat. One nice thing about the Fox is even way in back, the sound is fantastic.

I figured I'd have no problem getting tickets for either the Vegas or Denver NIN shows in November. Went to buy tickets this morning...cheapest floor tickets for either are $145.
Ouch.
When darkness veils the world, four Warriors of Light shall come.

I saw London Souls are opening for Black Crowes. I figured why not. I've always meant to see Black Crowes and London Souls may not ever make it back to the States. Lawns seats $50. Pavilion $100. Really? $100 to see the Black Crowes. Seriously? So scratch London Souls off the list of bands I'd like to see one day.
You doing City of Lights? I'm seeing a number of people I know or know of performing there, even though they're not listed. It looks like it could be a lot of fun. I've never heard of it until this year. Is this an annual thing or a first time?
I'm sad the Grand Rapids seems to have it goin' on better than Detroit on a lot of things.
City Lights has been going on since 2009, it's an annual thing...
Not at all my scene so I've never been...with the kids and their lights and hoola hoops and furry boots and glow sticks and loud music...I do like Super Dre though, she's cute!
I thought you hated DJ "shows" about as much as me? I guess this being a festival might be more fun...
Probably late notice to go today since it's the second day, but you could crash at my house. We live pretty close to downtown and Calder Plaza...I'd even drop you off and pick you up!
Serious, email me if you're half-way thinking about it...
Anyone want to take my tickets to see Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers perform at the Chicago Theater this Thursday? I can't make the show, and would like to offload them. I paid $120 plus Ticketmaster fees for the tickets, looking for $80 for the pair. Anyone in the Chicago area interested?

WAS going to see The Tragically Hip tonight, but it seems there was a big storm during their show in Buffalo last might and their gear got ruined. So they cancelled.
I cant tell you how bummed I am. I have been waiting forever to see them outdoors. I've seen them many times, but usually indoors during the winter.
Glad the band and fans are okay, just super, super bummed.
I shall be enjoying the smooth jazz/rock stylings of Walter Becker and Donald Fagan, collectively know as Steely Dan in one week. Got friends coming in from out of town and its going to be a weekend of partying! Cant wait!

I am seeing them on Friday. Perfect music for the outdoor venue they are playing at, Ravinia.
Yeah, Ravinia is perfect for them. I'm going there tomorrow to see the Chicago Symphony.
My wife loved the Bon Jovi concert last week. He played 3+ hours, including 7 encores, and didn't finish until nearly midnight. J. Geils Band opened -- without Wolf, their pop stuff sounded terrible, but their blues stuff was good. Magic Dick was over-miked and some of the notes he blew on the harmonica could have served as a weapon of mass destruction. The beer lines were agonizingly slow -- you'd think one of the roaming beer vendors in the seats would take a hint that a lot of people would like something besides Miller Lite or Bud Lite, but for something better, you had to wait in line.

I probably dig them less than you but I dig on burlesque and fire toys and a number of acts I am familiar with will have been there.
Bought tickets to see Pearl Jam in Charlotte with the wife, which gives me the political capital to bow out of the Fun concert, and let one of her friends go in my place. Woo!!
Saw the Breeders on Friday. Before the show we grabbed a drink at a bar next to the venue and on the way out I saw a woman who looked exactly like Josephine Wiggs.
Turns out, it was Josephine Wiggs.
We got there early enough to get a spot right by the stage:
As part of my wife's 40th birthday extravaganza week, we're hitting the Hideout Block Party on Saturday.
1:30 Guitarkestra
2:00 Girl Group
3:00 Jon Langford
4:00 The Both (Aimee Mann and Ted Leo)
5:15 The Walkmen
6:30 Superchunk
7:45 The Hold Steady
9:00 Young the Giant
Unfortunately, I think we're going to end up missing The Walkmen, because that's probably when we'll take our son home to the sitter before coming back in time to see The Hold Steady. Maybe we can catch their first few songs. We also can't go on Friday night, which means we miss Neko Case. Still, should be fun assuming we can avoid rain.

Love Young the Giant. Like Alpha Rev, I can't figure out why they are not bigger than they are.
