Re: The Trump Presidency Thread
His Puerto Rico tweets are astonishingly callous... I mean, I shouldn’t be surprised at this point but he keeps finding ways for me to drop my jaw even further. In sum, the tweets seems to be saying that Puerto Rico has no one to blame but themselves for all the damage because they didn’t have the resources to withstand the hurricane as well as Texas and Florida. And that we’ll help, but we better get a cut back of the funds because Puerto Rico owes Wall Street money.
Like I said, astonishing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a statement like this from a President responding to a natural disaster.

He's human garbage. not that we all don't know it. Even Rip.
The NFL is all responding in solidarity over One Thing: being against Trump, IMO... (and by that I am saying, "the things our president seems to be ok with....")
I seriously hope the entire 'taking a knee' thing become something everyone does against Trump.

They kneeled before the anthem and stood during it. Jerry Jones trying to split the difference.... They still got booed though, so maybe the boos aren’t entirely about disrespecting the flag since they weren’t kneeling during the anthem....hepcat wrote:That's fantastic. Re: The Trump Presidency Thread
The power infrastructure of Puerto Rico was a huge mess before the hurricane struck and can show what can happen when you allow things to get that bad. That said a real leader would use it as an opportunity to rebuild it better. But in his eyes they aren't really US citizens and certainly not his voting block unlike many of the good people in the USA that keep overdeveloping the flood plains. No expense spared there...Captain Caveman wrote:His Puerto Rico tweets are astonishingly callous... He sees America as 'who is his' and the rest.
He has absolutely NO interest in actually governing in some manner that feeds his need to govern in some manner (he doesn't understand political politics at all, he's entirely UN-re-electable.) He's EMPTY on being able to seem to "actually care" OR (what I thought may be what save America, but seems not to be happening) realizing that if you don't give a shit about 'politics' and if you are above 'being bought' - you could/should STILL see how easy it would be to win the praise of the American people.... and he has so clearly not been that kind of 'new politician' - I can't see how a 'Trumpian' doesn't see that plane as day, yet - they are desperate assholes that have NEVER had a voice in the WH, so - why would they don't want to cut the cable.... sucks.

Not sure if this has been brought up already, but NFL players didn't stand for the national anthem until 2009 when the NFL starting getting paid by the DoD and National Guard. Paid patriotism FTW!

Steelers player Alejandro Villanueva who is an Army Ranger and served 3 tours in Afghanistan stood on the field for the Anthem and now has the number one highest selling jersey on the NFL store because of it.
It's the top seller in the league after the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle broke with his team and walked out of the tunnel for the national anthem.
The Steelers had decided as a group to stay in the locker room. They were one of three teams to sit out the anthem after President Trump said NFL owners should fire players joining the protest.

On the flip side Patriots fans boo their own team at home and yell at them to "STAND UP!"

On the one hand, I think he hates the job. It's work, and we all know he hates that. He'd rather just put his name on shit and collect a check. But the damn Republicans keep trying to make him do stuff. So I could easily see him dropping out after 1 term. Or even before then if they try to cut his golf days down to only 240 days a year.
On the other, his ego is legendarily huge. The thought that someone might beat him at something could drive him to run again.

It is genuinely mind-boggling that Puerto Rico is in the shape it's in and Trump still focuses on this flag drivel. I mean, it's not mind-boggling that he's doing this, but rather it's mind-boggling that even his supporters aren't up in arms.
We truly do have a gigantic swath of the population made up of terrible, terrible people. IMO this is an even greater indicator of this fact than the election & immediate aftermath was. Like, what's the argument for just ignoring Puerto Rico, other than 'those folks aren't real citizens and also they're mostly brownish'?

Re: The Trump Presidency Thread
It doesn't matter - he could potentially win the EC and lose by 5M votes next time. That seems distinctly possible now; rural America has the reins right now. The Dems control 55% of the votes in the House and have far less than a majority of the seats. They probably control approximately the same amount of votes in the Senate (tough to quantify with the split R/D states) but they only control 48 seats there because of the massive small state bias in the Senate.stessier wrote:Yeah - take a tour of the South sometime. This design might have been genius at one time but it will likely strangle this democracy to death eventually. Alternately internal pressure will keep building as truly terrible people pushing rural whiteness on young, diverse, non-racist folks in the densely populated states. And then it will ignite.

Stumping for Strange, trying to win support for Trumpcare, taking meetings (granted, they're mostly just held so his sycophants can jerk him off in public), these all take Trump away from his favorite things: sitting in a chair getting his photo taken for an article written about him by someone he bought, playing golf all day long, and monitoring the world from his secret island lair in order to find out what people are saying about him.Zaxxon wrote:I'm sorry--it almost seems as though you believe that he has actually been doing stuff (other than golfing, tweeting, enriching his family businesses and hearing the lamentations of their women taking in the yuge crowds at speeches in areas friendly to him.hepcat wrote:On the one hand, I think he hates the job. Despair. Absolute, soul grinding despair has been the one thing I've experienced from this fiasco. This is not partisan politics, this is putting a shitty human being in charge, and reveling in it. That's not dems vs reps, that's good vs. shitty. The number of shitty people out there is mind boggling. The fact that they are your acquaintances, co-workers, brothers and sisters, uncles and aunts etc and having been hiding their shittiness this entire time until Drumpf has made it clear that it is now the time of the shitty people so it's ok to let your shitty flag fly, wow. Just...wow.
edit: I see Zax has the shitty people angle covered.

Re: The Trump Presidency Thread
Interesting. Well if they were still in the dressing room I actually don't have a huge problem with it.
Can I just say that I find this flag/anthem/patriotism link to the military to be profoundly weird? A country is more than it's military, and the anthem, flag and patriotism is about the country. How/when did the military replace country in all this? It feels like the military is on the wrong side of this equation.
Standing at attention during anthem = honor for country
serving in the military = honour for country
Somehow it's become:
Standing at attention during anthem = honor for military.

Re: The Trump Presidency Thread
On a personal note I was at a random Fox and Hound for MNF last night in NC. Several people stood for the anthem, hands on hearts, hats off. And then stared down the rest of us with eyes of judgement for not participating. It was fucking creepy. There are a lot of very malleable minds out there. Hoping to impose their very angry worldview on others. I find it comforting that Trump is a huge fucking moron and hasn't truly capitalized on that. We could be in far worse trouble I think. But that is short-term comfort.

I admit, I am desperate to believe that Trump just Can NOT be re-elected. I seriously can't accept that our country has turned into 'that'. Although, perhaps I need to.GreenGoo wrote:Agreed. At no point during this have I thought to myself, ok, it was a mistake, people understand that and have learned from it, and a feeling of hope for the future has returned.pr0ner wrote:If you genuinely think Trump is not re-electable, I have a bridge in the Sahara to sell you.Unagi wrote:He sees America as 'who is his' and the rest.
He has absolutely NO interest in actually governing in some manner that feeds his need to govern in some manner (he doesn't understand political politics at all, he's entirely UN-re-electable.) He's EMPTY on being able to seem to "actually care" OR (what I thought may be what save America, but seems not to be happening) realizing that if you don't give a shit about 'politics' and if you are above 'being bought' - you could/should STILL see how easy it would be to win the praise of the American people.... and he has so clearly not been that kind of 'new politician' - I can't see how a 'Trumpian' doesn't see that plane as day, yet - they are desperate assholes that have NEVER had a voice in the WH, so - why would they don't want to cut the cable.... sucks.
Also, I need to stop posting drunk.

The fun part in all this is that I'm fairly confident those assholes didn't get up for the anthem at FnH dinners in the past, just as virtually no one stands at home when the anthem comes on.malchior wrote:On a personal note I was at a random Fox and Hound for MNF last night in NC. We could be in far worse trouble I think. But that is short-term comfort.
But now that the uppity minorities are peacefully using the anthem to protest clearly terrible treatment by police! No, not that one... Disrupting the pomp and circumstance of the ceremony! I really hope you took a knee. That would have been great - assuming you survived the encounter.malchior wrote:On a personal note I was at a random Fox and Hound for MNF last night in NC. Oh man - you got so close! The correct answer was, "now that uppity minorities are not respecting Trump."Zaxxon wrote:The fun part in all this is that I'm fairly confident those assholes didn't get up for the anthem at FnH dinners in the past, just as virtually no one stands at home when the anthem comes on.malchior wrote:On a personal note I was at a random Fox and Hound for MNF last night in NC. I just maintained my bar stool. I was by myself having just stopped in for a rare beer. It is a mix of locals and business folk (myself being in the latter group). All the business folk just kind of exchanged WTF glances and let it be. Taking a knee never crossed my mind but could have been hilarious.stessier wrote:I really hope you took a knee. Re: The Trump Presidency Thread
I've never stood for the anthem when watching on TV or at a bar. In the stadium, yes, but anywhere else where it isn't being played live? Nope.

The only reason Trump hasn't issued an executive order requiring the Bellamy Salute, which was the original "correct" way to salute the flag during the anthem is he probably doesn't know what it is.

I spent 90% of the money I made on women, booze, and drugs. The other 10% I just pissed away.

Re: The Trump Presidency Thread
I'd love to get to the point where standing for the national anthem is less about expressing anger towards those who don't, and more about respect for our country.Skinypupy wrote:That sort of thing creeps me the hell out.malchior wrote:On a personal note I was at a random Fox and Hound for MNF last night in NC. Re: The Trump Presidency Thread
I've seen this since someone post 9-11 wanted to fight me for not taking my hat off during a 7th inning stretch rendition of God Bless America. These are the same assholes. They suddenly decide what is the proper mark of respect and reverence, no matter how ironic or contradictory. The guy actually said "You take your fucking hat off for the Anthem!" I've made it point ever since to keep my hat on during that "anthem."Skinypupy wrote:That sort of thing creeps me the hell out.malchior wrote:On a personal note I was at a random Fox and Hound for MNF last night in NC. I've always found it funny (not haha funny, just peculiar) sitting in a bar watching the people on TV stand for the anthem while everyone is sitting doing shots and talking. But did I think it should be different.
Why do you stand in a bar when the anthem is on TV?
Answer: "Because I respect the flag and this country!"
Truth: "Because some brown BLM asshole didn't stand."
When did you start?
Answer: "As soon as I knew how to walk!"
Truth: "This week."
Also, what happens in a bar with like 5 games on at once? Do they just keep standing? Which TV do you if there are two anthems going? Which one gets sound?
