Lost my Steely Dan post in the great outage of '13 so Ill just summarize for those who may want to see the show. It was great! They toured with an incredibly skilled band but heads above the rest was the drummer. He was insanely good. Ive seen some of the greats live like Moon, Peart and Bonham and this kid could easily hold his own with these guys, he was that good. Very fun show. If you like Steely Dan at all go see it.
Well do you ever get the feeling that the story's too damn real and in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage and it seems like you're the only person sitting in the audience?

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis ended up being the second largest concert in Fort Collins history after the Rolling Stones many moons ago. It was an amazing show. It was really cool, when he got to his gay rights song "Same Love" it got the loudest applause for the entire night from what was in general an insanely loud crowd. After the song he talked about how excited he is for how far this civil rights struggle of our era can go/has already gone and asked anyone else who agreed that people should be allowed to love whoever they love by holding your arm with an index finger pointing up-- and I am thinking nearly all 15,000 people did so screaming their asses off with approval like they just saw the Beatles sing Hey Jude. It was an amazing experience.

The other funny story is a bunch of college freshman girls at that concert told my wife and I how great it is that we still get out and do stuff like going to see Macklemore. Talk about feeling old, lol! :D

Saw Murder By Death again on Friday night. Best show yet, since the last time they were here and headlining, the venue was kinda sucky.

Also of note were opening band 4onthefloor of Minneapolis. They were actually missing their drummer due to border crossing issues, but still not lacking percussion as each member is set up with a kick drum. Sounds a bit gimmicky, but I ended up really liking them.

This tour hits Seattle tonight and many US dates remain to come, looks like. Murder By Death are amazing.

Speaking of Border Crossing Issues. How is this affecting your small venues?

That just sounds crazy to me. Most of these small club musicians don't even make $250 a person a night.

I just passed on seeing Depeche Mode. A friend of mine had an extra ticket and asked on Facebook if anyone wanted it. Due to my limited mobility and the fact it was at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn on Friday, I did the honorable thing and told a friend of mine to call him instead of taking the ticket myself. She got the ticket. I just hope this isn't one of those moments of regret.

Adam Ant is playing tomorrow and i kinda want to go... i like the new album; best 'solo' record he's released.

Nik Turner is going to be here, i just found out - i am excited for this one. tickets were all of $12. some incarnation of Hawkwind was touring the US in 1993 or '94, but the Minneapolis show was 21+ and i wasn't old enough... i think it was cancelled anyways. i don't think they've been back since?

coming up:

The Mission
The Orb
Jarboe
Pet Shop Boys (also recently released a very good album)
The Waterboys
The Legendary Pink Dots
Goblin

In a few days, I'll be seeing east coast singer Lennie Gallant at a free concert. Been looking forward to this all summer as I've been familiar with his stuff for awhile. And he's had a song covered by Jimmy Buffett.

Amon Amarth, Skeletonwitch, and Enslaved doing a US tour this winter. Going to be a facemelter, for sure.

Bummed I have to miss Legendary Pink Dots tomorrow night. Have our annual team dinner at work. :(

Going to see Brett Dennen the last weekend of October. Small venue, should be pretty cool. When he released his first album I told a good friend of mine (Wayne) to check it out and he ended up loving it. We wore that album out at work. He passed away in an accident a few years later so every time I hear Brett Dennen I think of him. I really want to go because Wayne would have been right there with me, first in line. This one will be for you buddy!

You beat me to it Skinypupy, I'm all over that Amon Amarth show.

They'll be at the same venue I saw them at last year. Awesome live band.

When browsing the internet to see if there were any local happenings in support of Filipino American Heritage Month, I discovered Lea Salonga is playing at a south suburban university. She is sort of like a Filipino Celine Dion; while her voice is good, that music style doesn't really interest me. I saw her on a lot of talk shows though and she is very entertaining even when not singing.

I mentioned this to a Filipina here at work and her eyes lit up...she wanted more information. I better stop talking about it or we'll never find a baby sitter. :ninja:

Ah, good, I get to avoid the Filipina diva. In spite of a large number of recordings I bought for my wife, it turns out she doesn't like her nearly as much as her former roommate assured me she did. Not really enough to spend $35 to go see.

So the concert slate for the foreseeable future includes likely Ooompah bands at various Oktoberfests over the next few weeks.

I might be the only person on these boards to listen to them and I have no idea what the live show is like (I was sick the last time they were in town) but their star is rising fast and their studio sound is at the top. They've got that Fleet Foxes/Of Monsters and Men/Lumineers vibe going only they're way more listenable from top to bottom IMO and at this point in their careers they're way more accessible. (Six months ago they were play 100 person venues for $10 a pop... And I'm still annoyed I missed them the last three times they were in town)

Izzy, in particular based on what you say you like, I think you would really want to catch them in Dallas.

I just learned of this band earlier this week, gonna go see Lake Street Dive at a small venue in nashville tuesday night. Here they are last year at the pickathon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8tjJWvH8XU" target="_blank

Edit: Update after seeing the show. They were pretty damn good I thought. The lead singer, Rachel Price, was amazing. She could be Scarlett Johanson's jazzy sister. The guitarist/trumpet guy I felt was turned up too loud when playing his guitar, and sometimes I thought the other members were a tad too loud, slightly drowning out rachel's phenomenal voice. Overall, that had a few meh songs, but 85% or so where really awesome. Most of their stuff was original but they did do a few covers which were Rich Girl, I Want You Back, and Faith. Recommend checking them out if you are into their style of music.

Be forewarned, even though the Pixies are touring again next year, they will be sans Kim Deal, even though seating is $74 for the good GA area and $52 for the cheap seats locally.

They're playing the local Opera house. Not the venue for Pixies. Seeing Dead Can Dance there was awesome but Pixies?

Meh.

Friday night was Tanya Donnely's performance as part of Portland's Wordstock Festival

Our seats were...close:

There were four separate performers so she only did four of her songs (although "Honeychain" was a nice surprise) but still - considering her recent retirement talk this was probably my last chance to see her and I wasn't about to miss it.

That's where I tend to see most shows from. That's part of why it's hard for me to go to arena shows. (Though redrun and I are going to seen NIN tonight, and that's my arena show for the year) The other part is warranting the price.

I'm sad at the volume of shows I've been passing. Fuck my back and being exhausted all of the time. It's fricken annoying.

Just got back from the Brett Dennen show. Incredible show for the stupid cheap price we paid ($15). Small venue (300-400 folks), right near the stage.

I love seeing artists who you can tell are giving it all they've got in each and every song, and not just phoning it in. His whole show was song after song of him leaving it all out on the stage. The opening act was even killer (Noah Gundersen and his sis), and Brett brought them out during the encore to do two more songs with him.

All said he played for a solid two hours, and combined with the excellent opener we got 3 hours of kick-ass live music for half of what it would cost us to go to a movie. Good times!

Has anyone seen the current Pearl Jam tour? Seeing them tomorrow night in Charlotte...just wondering if it's good, if they have been playing stuff off the new album mostly, or older tunes, etc. Not that it will change my going of course.

I will say that I tend to get fired up when I hear about certain artists coming to a nearby venue, but then when it comes to actually making the effort to 1. get babysitter, 2. plan trip (if necessary), 3. realize that I will either be driving home REAL late in heavy traffic, or have to get a hotel night, etc...sometimes most of the time wish I had never booked the tickets.

Damn, I'm old.

Haven't seen munch. Haven't done much. If I can get the energy the following are on my list though:

Sleeper Agent Tue 2/4/2014 <<< Definitely. Need to get tix before they sell out
Lord Huron Fri 1/31/2014 <<< Definitely. Need to get tix before they sell out
Creepshow (Reverend Horton Heat and Nekromantix) Sat 1/18/2014 <<< Definitely. Need to get tix before they sell out
Anthony Raneri with Nina Diaz Saturday 12/7/2013
Lucero and Titus Andronicus (Nov 16 and 17) Sat 11/16/2013
Mazzy Star Fri 11/15/2013
Cymbals Eat Guitars Thu 11/14/2013
Sleigh Bells Tues 11/12/2013 <<< Not sure if they sold out yet or not
Limousines Sat 11/2/2013 <<< We'll see what my energy is like this weekend if they don't sell out.

There are probably other things but I have been out of touch for a good long while, so I only see shows when I'm explicitly emailed about them. I don't go looking any more.

I'm finding myself cutting back on concerts just because of a lack of time and energy.

I'm going to miss Mazzy Star next month because I just can't make it to another event - and because they're playing the Crystal Ballroom which is far too large/ noisy a venue for them. I'm skipping seeing the Pixies (-1) because they're playing the wrong venue, too.

Maybe I'm just getting old and cranky.

I cut back a couple of years back. Time, energy, and my back... and my socially anxious side decided I had had enough and enforce this behavior.

I've also become more and more of a venue snob as I see less and less shows and I was already venue snobby before I cut back.

Ha! This is me exactly, and it drives my wife crazy, who loves going to concerts.

I got home from the Pearl Jam concert last night at about 1:45a, I guess, which for me, is not that late (I get up around 6:30 every AM), but man...the energy it sucked out of me...felt like it was 4:30am instead of 1:30a. And I am also a bit of a sound snob, so of course that was my first complaint. I know, it's a rock concert. They're loud...get over it. :music-rockon:

And I don't dance at concerts like some do (wife included). Sometimes I feel like I am the only person in the place that is so intent on and interested in actually hearing the artist perform his/her music, that I don't want to sing with, dance to, or otherwise yell and holler (maybe after songs), because I'm not there to hear ME!

Damn that sounds like an old grouch, and not a little bit anti-social, AMIRIGHT?! :D I told the wife that I am done with arena concerts from now on (I think I have said that three times to her already), and am sticking to the smaller names, at the smaller venues. Case in point: got to see Alpha Rev recently, standing literally right in front of them, in a bar. Amazing lead singer. In between those two, I saw Brandi Carlile a couple years ago, in a church converted into an acoustically awesome sound stage - TINY venue, and of course the sound was amazing. Was able to get so close, I caught one of her guitar picks. So much less stress in those situations than the big stadium or arena tours (though I certainly don't regret a few of those I went to, notably U2, 2x).

See if you can pick me out in this smiley representation of me at the PJ concert last night: :D

A capacity of 2500 seems to be my thresh hold unless there are extenuating circumstances. A capacity of 300 is about what I really like. I also want elbow room in a room of 300 or of 2500. What makes no sense to my snobby mind is that the 300 person show where the artists are really performing for me is only ten to fifteen dollars a pop but when they perform fleas in a circus to 35,000 people or more it's $75 to $150 a pop. My only problem with my 300 person venues are that they inevitably only have a half dozen chairs and my back can't take standing around for three to five hours any more.

I'm debating seeing Flatfoot 56 tomorrow but I also have to go to a retirement party and I know I'm seeing Sleighbells next week and am also debating Mazzy Star... and Cymbals Eat Guitars... And Lucero with Titus Andronicus... That's just way too much for a guy who rarely drags his out to do one thing a month any more.

Demand/popularity.

300 person shows also probably don't necessitate a ticket broker (like Ticketmaster, for one), who takes a big cut of course. Venue size goes up, costs go up as well - security, staff, electrical, etc.
