This actually is true. Trump is clearly trying to peel off African American voters. I think some of his strategists see an opportunity in a Pete or Sanders nomination there. This is why Trump has so much advantage. If it's Biden they can calculate they lose the youth vote. If it is Pete and Sanders other pieces are at risk. He has all the time in the world to go after them because he has a lock on the cult.

The official White House Twitter posted this last night:

I'll give them credit for one thing, they certainly know how to coalesce around a message.

It's fascinating to watch how quickly the idea that Pelosi tore up the speech because of those things (not because the speech was filled with lies, half-truths, and fearmongering) and therefore hates America take root in the conservative conscience.Speaker Pelosi just ripped up:
One of our last surviving Tuskegee Airmen.
The survival of a child born at 21 weeks.
The mourning families of Rocky Jones and Kayla Mueller.
A service member's reunion with his family.
That's her legacy.
I'll give them credit for one thing, they certainly know how to coalesce around a message.

Consider that at least 2 of his game show give aways were designed to appeal to them. He made a Tuskegee airman a General and the scholarship. (It also was support for DeVos's charter school initiatives on top). He made references to black unemployment being the lowest ever. It is a clear attempt that has low chances but he has all the space to operate right now because the opposition is feckless.stessier wrote: Wed Feb 05, 2020 10:07 amConsidering all the minorities he was denigrating, I guess I overlooked that or thought people who see through it. I believe that’s because they are desperate for something to say that won’t be laughed at, so they all say what’s agreed upon and wait for the most obnoxious of them to defend it.

I don't care what your politics are, a President who only agrees to lead one half of the country and dismisses the other half as the enemy is a traitor. That's not upholding your oath of office, it's not patriotism. "The party of Lincoln" my ass.

Recent SOTU's have consistently had the element where the President calls out to the audience to personalize an example of a policy or achievement. This was the first in my memory that they were mostly flat out pandering giveaways. You are the last *BLACK* let me say it again *BLACK* Tuskegee airman alive. You are a GENERAL NOW! We respect *BLACK* PEOPLE *AND* THE MILITARY. It's pandering and a trap all in one. You have to applaud it.Unagi wrote: Wed Feb 05, 2020 10:13 am Also.

Re: Political Randomness
To me, the worst part is that while the destruction of our government has been in motion for decades, Donald Trump - of all people - is the guy that finally brought it to it's knees. That this proudly ignorant, racist, xenophobic, corrupt, reality-show carnival barker is the hill that this country has collectively decided to die on, and which has ultimately proved to much for the system to handle.YellowKing wrote: Wed Feb 05, 2020 10:17 am I don't care what your politics are, a President who only agrees to lead one half of the country and dismisses the other half as the enemy is a traitor. I agree that it is depressing but I disagree that we deserve this. This system is what failed - not the people. It was attacked and undermined. We found out the hard way that the system was mostly built on the good faith of fellow Americans to generally respect each other. The white supremecists are in a tiny minority. And the people looking the other way are a superset that is still a minority. The system is holding us hostage to that. I guess we could all take to the streets but the majority is full of people who don't recognize or worse are deluding themselves to the danger. They don't think it can happen here or that it is both side or whatever lie they tell themselves. A lot of people think the center will hold no matter what. It isn't.LordMortis wrote: Wed Feb 05, 2020 2:05 pmI still believe (I have nothing to back it up) that they are the minority I thought they were. I tend to agree. My guess is that the overall number of true white supremacists is probably not that much greater than before, although they are far more visible and much louder because they feel empowered.LordMortis wrote: Wed Feb 05, 2020 2:05 pmI still believe (I have nothing to back it up) that they are the minority I thought they were. However, the huge number of people who tie themselves in knots to convince themselves that Trump's (and the administrations) actions do not have any racial subtext is hugely disappointing. The number of times I've heard "I'm not racist, but..." seems to be increasing by the hour, sadly.
