"Will you honor your treaty obligations in the event of Russian aggression?" is not the same as "will you protect us from Russia?".

Lastly, NATO requires members to spend a percentage of their GDP on their OWN defense. Not pay it to the US as if it's protection money. That members are not spending enough on their defense is a valid complaint, but no one is getting screwed, and NATO members contribute regularly to NATO military operations (of which there is no defined "dollar value" that must be part of every operation).

The US receives the exact same amount of dollars whether NATO members meet their NATO obligations on defense spending or not. Zero. Using this for political purposes is misleading at best, dishonest at worst. And since it's drumpf, assume the worst.

I don't think so. Pretty sure I read that all members except Finland are now spending at least 2% of GDP and many are over that. They started reluctantly raising their budgets in response to trump's bombast and really stepped up their games when Putin invaded Ukraine. Finland will be in compliance by 2026.

Yes - much of the 800 billion spent on defence by the Us does not go on defense for nato but other operations while most budget by small nations goes to their own defense.

Yes Denmark “only” sent 2000 troops as the magats like to point out but how many per capita did a small Us state send? The Canadian Armed Forces had the highest per-capita casualty rate among coalition members. I can’t recall their pm saying America only gets help if it buys more of our stuff.

I think it’s clear most European nations need to spend more on their own defence. Even if the Us was not there. As the head British general said the other day we are in our generations 1937 moment and we need to consider building the army to be prepared for when Ukraine falls.

Personally trump is a fool though. We have so much surplus stuff we could give like old Bradley’s etc to help build up those forces but it needs to be about friendship not about being a mob boss.
