I'll wager that they leave that out as it'll look too weird. Also,
Spoiler:
Hayt is a mentat, so they'll want him to do Thufir's eyeroll thing.

I bet you a pumpkin spice latte it's the opposite. Part 2 makes me think DV is going to lean into the weird more for the next one. And I think the spoiler-ed bit is underdeveloped in the first two and therefore will be dropped.

The character of Thufir Hawat (Stephen McKinley Henderson) was briefly introduced in Dune as a loyal friend and adviser to House Atreides, but there was no sign of the Mentat (human computer) in the recent sequel.

Director Denis Villeneuve has previously said that out of all the scenes that ended up being cut from Part Two, losing Hawat was the most "painful."

"One of the most painful choices for me on this one was Thufir Hawat. He's a character I absolutely love, but I decided right at the beginning that I was making a Bene Gesserit adaptation. That meant that Mentats are not as present as they should be, but it's the nature of the adaptation."

AMC Exec: We Wouldn't Have Made the Dune Popcorn Bucket if We Knew You'd Be Sickos About It
“We continue to learn and evolve. We would have never imagined the Dune thing. We would have never created it knowing it would be celebrated or mocked,” AMC Chief Content Officer Elizabeth Frank told Variety about the overwhelming response to the sandworm bucket, which even got cast and crew talking for its, uh... soft, wormy tendrils, driving people to go crazy with demand for the shai-hulussy-shaped vessel.

I finally watched Part 2. I have to admit that I liked the Lynch version better. I know that it deviated more from the books (I've only read the first three), but that movie was just so damn cool.

Dune 2 was a really good movie and I hope they do make God Emperor. I just preferred Lynch's version with pugs and Kenneth McMillan's over-the-top performance.

Ignoring Sting chewing scenery in Lynch's Dune is like ignoring the fact that Lynch's Dune shields make everyone look like Minecraft characters.

I'm watching DUNE 2 scene by scene on MAX today, and there's a detail I missed when I saw it in the theater. It's also one that doesn't appear in the novel.

When the Emperor decides to come to Arrakis near the end of the movie, he does so on the advice of Irulan and the Bene Gesserit. Earlier in the movie Irulan had advised her father to let Arrakis go to war (Harkonnen vs Fremen) and then show up as a savior, thus calming the planet and securing the flow of spice.

In the novel, of course, the plan is for Rabban to oppress the Fremen and then (once that is done) allow Feyd-Rautha to arrive and replace Rabban as a savior figure, offering relative freedom from oppression once it is no longer needed. The spice would flow.

In the movie, the Emperor's arrival on Arrakis takes the Harkonnens by surprise. When the Emperor's giant spaceball arrives, Feyd-Rautha and the Baron see that they are being outmaneuvered, and the Baron calls on the other Great Houses to resist Corrino power. It's actually the Harkonnens who try to draw on the Landsraad to resist the Emperor.

Of course the result is the same: Paul threatens the spice and the Houses resist his claim, but still, it's an interesting detail.

This is the plan in the movies as well. Pretty sure it's in part one where the Baron describes that as the plan.

I don't recall how the Emperor's arrival is orchestrated in the books, though.

They are on my account (Swedish, but I'd be surprised if it's different in the US).

On that note, there was a Max teaser trailer recently for the new Dune TV show, which takes place 10,000 years before Paul (so, around the forming of the Spacing Guild, Mentats, Bene Gesserit etc):

And a very troubled production, with Johan Renck (Chernobyl) quitting due to creative differences.

Still, Max is part of the old HBO brand. And they've got Emily Watson. I doubted House of the Dragon could be any good until I saw it, so benefit of the doubt until I see it.

Hopefully they ignore Brian as much as they can and write their own stories.

What you DON'T see if you aren't paying very close attention, and this is what Jaymann is referring to, is Paul's volunteer work with the local animal shelter, as well as visiting nursing sietchs to read to elderly Fremen. But that always happens in the background of fight scenes, so it's easy to miss.

Supposedly Frank Herbert wrote the sequel in part because he was annoyed that people were thinking of Paul as a hero.

i was originally going to stop at the first book due to the 'advice' of all these people i had been hearing for years, but i realized they were all wrong. (at least for the Frank-written ones. it appears the ones that say 'don't bother with the Brian-written ones' were actually correct)

The movies hint at it, but the book is clearer (and presumably movie 3 will make plain) that Paul isn't just starting a regular old war. His prescience has shown him that this path will lead to a genocidal cataclysm that will eclipse anything before in history.

That is where Frank really went off the rails -- more so than Brian ever did, although Brian did flesh out that character's back-story.

I was revisiting this thread and was reminded that the first Dune 1 trailer included a cover of Pink Floyd's "Eclipse." ("All that you touch, and all that you see...")

Of course there was no hint of that song in the movie itself, thankfully. I wonder what was the logic of including it in the trailer? Just buzz?

Post from well before Dune 1 was released:
Lagom Lite wrote: Wed Sep 09, 2020 6:24 pm I thought a bit about how the Baron might be portrayed in this, given the glimpse of him in the trailer. I think Stellan might bring a kind of sadness to the character. Not a screaming maniac but a corrupted sick man, sort of wheezing his lines. I think Stellan could play up the bitterness and spite nicely. Portraying the Baron as a highly dangerous man because of his brilliance and insight into the darkness within the hearts of men, and driven by wanting vengeance on the Atreides. But as a broken man rather than a Kenneth McMillan-style madman.
I think LL nailed it. :)
