Updated county impacts as of noon today. Amount of rainfall expected has doubled and sustained winds up by 20 mph, gusts up by 10 mph. Nasty . Glad I've got the septic folks coming tomorrow morning to pump the tank.

5pm EDT advisory. A glimmer of good news for us and our west coast family. The track of Milton has pulled (or is it a slice?) a bit to the right. The eye coming ashore significantly south of Tampa Bay would actually pull water out of the bay, limiting the storm surge. The track crosses Florida and exits south of us, putting us on the weaker left quadrant. But it could wobble back so we'll just keep waiting...

Earliest Reasonable Arrival Time: the primary graphic, which identifies the time window that users at individual locations can safely assume will be free from tropical-storm-force winds. Specifically, this is the time before which there is no more than a 1-in-10 (10 percent) chance of seeing the onset of sustained tropical-storm-force winds – the period during which preparations should ideally be completed for those with a low tolerance for risk.

Most Likely Arrival Time: the graphic that identifies the time before or after which the onset of tropical-storm-force winds is equally likely. This graphic would be more appropriate for users who are willing to risk not having completed all their preparations before the storm arrives.

10pm CDT update. Another slight shift to the right. Fingers crossed that these shifts are maintained or even increase. It will save a good deal of the St. Pete/Tampa metro area from heavy storm surge and will lessen the winds we see here, although there will be more rain. If the shift continues I wouldn't be surprised to see the Naples area given a higher estimated peak storm surge.

In spite of forecasts that today would be pretty dry, it has been raining most of the time since sunrise . I half expected the septic people to bail on me but they did show up and fortuitously it stopped raining just after they arrived... till about ten minutes after they left. But the important thing is that even if the ground gets saturated I have a thousand gallon tank available.

Little change in the forecast cone. If the storm moves along the track in the center of the cone Tampa Bay will be spared a lot of the surge, but the Port Charlotte/Cape Coral area will see bad surge. However, the estimate of effects for our county look better than the estimate yesterday:

Yeah, I been watching the news. Apparently there is an enhanced chance of EF-2 tornados all afternoon and evening. A 10% chance of an EF-2 within 25 miles of any point in the alert area.

The 5pm EDT advisory. The track has wiggled back to the left a bit :( which brings the eye right over us again. The NHC track tool shows that at 2am, assuming the eye follows the track, the center of the storm will be over Lakeland, FL with winds of a strong Cat I.

The Spectrum weather storm forecast for our county is a bit better still, although I'm pretty sure we've had more than five inches of rain already. Interestingly the "Worst Weather" start time has been pulled back to 9pm tonight. Milton has dropped  to a Cat III which, according to the experts, means the storm winds aren't as strong but would be in a bigger radius. I'm OK with that .

Well, that was exciting. Just went through a tornado warning. Waterspout just off Cocoa Beach, moving at 40 mph headed in our direction. We moved to our long walk-through closet with chairs, back up lights and my phone. Sadly we don't have the helmets and the whistle they recommend. Happily the rotation dissipated before it reached half-way to us.

You be careful too up in Jacksonville, from Yale Climate Connections just now:
When Milton emerges off the Florida east coast on Thursday morning, the hurricane’s wind field will be even larger, driving a storm surge of three to five feet to the coast of northeastern Florida and Georgia. Water levels at Jacksonville, Florida, are predicted to peak at about four feet above the high tide mark near 3 p.m. EDT Thursday, which would be the highest water level ever observed (records go back to 1928). Widespread evacuation orders have been given in the region.
And there is this:

Well that’s not a great sign. Watching local news and the tornadoes did a lot of damage already, and the storm hasn’t even made landfall yet.

Also, Siri would always say “port street Lucie “

After a day filled with rain, gusty winds and a nearby tornado, since about sunset it has been all calm outside. Practically no wind, the rain has stopped and it looks to be nice for a while at least (we are where the first "a" in Cape Canaveral is located).

Thanks, we're hoping for the best too.

Looking at the 11pm EDT advisory, figuring out where the eye is, the rate of travel and the distance to us, I figure the eye will go over us at about 4:30am. Unfortunately, just like Hurricane Ian a couple of years ago, it will be dark and so nothing to really see. So I'm hoping to sleep through it...

We just got a wind gust and I heard the roof creak a bit :ninja:

Well crap, we've got some damage :(. I fell asleep at about midnight, sleep solidly till about six. Woke up and it was quiet outside. Then, in a couple of minutes, whoosh!, the eye finished passing over up and it started blowing really, really hard. I waited a few minutes then went out on the covered porch and also looked out from the garage. A few shingle tabs on the ground but nothing else.

Then a lot of crunching aluminum noise and the entire aluminum roof over my back patio tore off, thankfully not while I out there. And it shredded the screening over the pool cage. At least the pieces didn't end up hitting my neighbor's house, but I think they did damage the shingle roof and maybe the solar panels for the pool. I'll have to wait till daylight and for the wind to drop to assess the damage.

We never lost power, at least not so far. It's still blowing hard and from a different direction than during the night so we might still lost power.

I'm hearing the storm hit a large mass of dry air - and that ended up keeping it to the level it was. It could have been much worse, but it hit a 'dry' wall that tore it up.

Looks like Tampa dodged a bullet, relatively speaking. The predicted massive storm surge and related flooding does not appear to have happened:
