I think it's even simpler.

Trump never references Hannibal Lector as a threat, which he would do if the riff were about fear-mongering immigrants. Instead, he always says something like "the late great Hannibal Lector, who had a friend over for dinner." He treats it as a funny joke and expects a laugh.

And that's it. He thinks he came up with this funny joke ("a friend over for dinner") himself, and he's going to repeat it every time he has an audience. This is a pattern common in people whose brains have turned to mush.

This does raise an interesting question that I never thought about until yesterday, as the GOP has been hammering Harris because he laughs too much. Pretty sure Trump even called her "Cackling Kamala" at one point.

Outside of maybe a quick chuckle at one of his own stupid jokes, I don't think I've ever seen footage of Trump ever laughing. How miserable of a life it must be to be such a raging narcissist and sociopath that you have no capacity to even be able to laugh.

Taking you at good faith, I'll just tell you that unless you're spelling out the whole name of the NAACP, you shouldn't use that word. It is WIDELY known to be racist in that usage in modern time. And even if you somehow missed that obvious message, there is NO WAY a Fox News host is unaware of it.

Maybe my parents were just older than most of yours. My folks would both be 99 this year. Even though I'm still under 60.

I'm pretty sure even during WWII they were aware that some of the names they used for the Japanese were offensive. They were the enemy at the time, so I'm also sure that was intentional.

Were you and your family still at war with Japan after WWII?

What irritates me is that they still intentionally or unintentionally continue to pronounce her name wrong.

Right, because he really needed to add "college" to clarify he wasn't talking about a middle school or high school sorority.

My parents (just shy of 80) still use "colored" (rarely) in random conversations. Not in a hateful way, but (like you mention) I think because they're "stuck" in what they heard growing up. They are also very fixated on identifying non-white in discussions or conversations when they relate how they met with a "Black nurse" or the new "Indian doctor". I'm not excusing it, I'm just relating.

The change in labels (to me) is no different from my (our?) generation that was told "queer" was unacceptable but has now been fully reclaimed by the LGBTQ+ community. It still sounds wrong to me to say/hear it, but times have changed (for the better, obviously).

Regardless, I have no doubt he slipped and said "colored" because that is what he's used to hearing/saying when he's not a TV personality. I obviously can't speak to whether or not hate is in his heart, but he doesn't have a problem taking a check from Fox News, so...

No way. There's no way to listen to that in good faith and think he said college, regardless of predisposition or where you grew up. Sebastian Gorka just dropped "colored" on another news program not long ago, so maybe he thought it was OK now. And like Smoove said, there's no need to go back to stress that he's talking about a "college" sorority. It doesn't pass the smell test.

I will say that I tend to pronounce her name like kuh-mall-a and not comma-la as I've recently learned is the correct pronunciation.

Yes, I have the superhero version stuck in my head. I have to actually visualize "Comma-La" to make sure I get it right.

I think that is culture signaling. When I first started to notice a pattern of mispronunciation, and by whom, I thought (justifiably IMO) that they were just showing their inner assholes. But I really think it's a groupthink thing now, where it confirms you belong to the "team". At least some of that, and probably a legit ignorance of how to pronounce non-"white" names well since so many in the MAGA movement are the "stay with my kind" types.
