Focus on the first syllable. Did it have the same vowel sound as the word "cot" or the word "cup"?

If the first syllable sounds like "cot", then the word would either be "college" or "collared" as in "remember to wear a collared shirt to your interview", (or "the police collared the suspect outside the liquor store") or "collard" as in greens.

To my ear, it sounds closer to the sound in "cup", which is why the word reads as "colored". I don't think he meant the obscure word "cullage", which would be nonsensical in context. I believe he actually intended to say "college", but his diction was not up to the task.

Also, it's "yani" not "laurel".
