And there he goes...
As Trump got more and more exposure over the last month Republicans didn't just decide they weren't interested in having him as their nominee- they also decided they flat don't like him. Only 34% of GOP voters now have a favorable opinion of Trump to 53% who view him in a negative light.

Man, the 'campaign' that Trump has been running is really an unmitigated disaster, I think. It's really hard to think of him actually getting the nomination. Meanwhile he's shattering his image as a smart, if ruthless, businessperson - it's hard to see him as anything other than an oaf now. And turning off viewers in large numbers - I read that the Apprentice numbers are way down.

Mitt Romney's health care tightwire act
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Mitt Romney stoutly defended his Massachusetts health care law in the face of its conservative critics, and called yesterday for replacing President Obama’s national plan with a more state-based overhaul of the US health care system.

In the first policy speech of his budding presidential campaign, Romney gave his strongest endorsement to date of the Massachusetts plan, including the decision to require residents to obtain health coverage.

“A lot of pundits around the nation are saying that I should just stand up and say this whole thing was a mistake, that it was a boneheaded idea and I should just admit it,’’ Romney said. “But there’s only one problem with that: It wouldn’t be honest. I, in fact, did what I believed was right for the people of my state.’’

But his plan for the country is radically different from his plan for Massachusetts. It includes no mandate for individual coverage, and changes tax laws to encourage people to buy their own portable insurance rather than relying on their employer’s coverage.
But Republicans won't let him have his cake and eat it, too.
WASHINGTON — The opposition among Republicans to Mitt Romney’s health care record runs deep, from the visceral vehemence of the grass-roots Tea Party movement to the dressing-down delivered yesterday by the bastion of conservative intellectuals: the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal.

...

Under the headline “Obama’s Running Mate,’’ the Journal questioned Romney’s very “philosophy of government,’’ an indictment that conservatives usually reserve for at tacks on liberal Democrats.

Instead of running for president as a Republican, the editorial suggested, he should be a candidate to replace Vice President Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket.

...

“Romneycare is an albatross around his neck,’’ said Blakely, in an interview. She suggested that Romney’s health care record cannot be explained away by charts and graphs or by a political argument — only a complete and unequivocal apology will do. “He needs to say, ‘If I could do it over, I would never have done it.’

...

“Game over, Mitt Romney,’’ conservative commentator Erick Erickson declared on his radio show last night. “Everyone’s been waiting for him to distance himself from Romneycare, but instead, every Republican will be distancing themselves from Romney.’’

...

“Mitt Romney, he’s OK with socialism at the state level, but not on the national level,’’ Erickson said.
Ouch.

From my perch here in Liberal Land, Romney appears to be the Republicans' only electable candidate (combining moderation with star power). The article says that NH voters are not as harsh on him, so it would be wrong to count him out just yet. But it sure does look like the Republicans are doing all they can to ensure Obama's reelection.

The good news for Romney is that if he can somehow survive the GOP primary, all of this opposition and consternation on the right would probably help him a great deal in the general election. The bad news is that he's virtually certain to lose the GOP primary.

This means a shake-up, since he has been polling consistently high.

Where do the Huckabee voters go now? I don't think Romney is their natural second choice.

He might have won the nomination but he would not have beaten Obama. Better to wait for 2016 when neither party has an incumbent.

I quite possibly would have voted for Huckabee if nobody else joins the race that I like better. The answer from me is: I don't know.

More candidates join the race?

I've been wondering about this. It seems like the 2012 GOP nomination race started about three days after Obama was inaugurated, and people are already tired of the old faces. There's plenty of time this summer or fall for a newcomer to join the ranks. Plus, now that Trump's basically over, the media is ready for the next contestant. So who's waiting in the wings?

I halfway expected Stanley McChrystal to move in, but I don't think any GOP'er can base his whole candidacy on the GWOT with Osama dead.

Who else?

Unless he goes overboard pandering to wingnuts between now and next April, I will support him in our state's primary. The nomination is usually sewed up before our turn to vote comes around but that might not be true this time with such a weak field and a divided party.

I wonder if Mitch Daniels (Gov of Indiana) will run. Part of my thinking is based on Barbour's withdrawal. I read somewhere that the two are friends and made a promise they wouldnt run against each other. SO i am wondering if barbour withdrew to give daniels a chance.

I am really curious about Huntsman actually, very, very curious how he will present his candidacy. But the candidates have to get in now and start building a network in Iowa. Tons of summer events they have to hit, since Iowa voters expect to be individually courted by the candidates staff. (By the way I hate how our system is set up currently, think it gives too much pwoer to the early nominating states...I need to look into how this evolved).

I have no choice but to announce my candidacy, to prevent this socialist from gaining office.
