TBH I don't really trust the management team at Disney seeing as how they managed to do something truly remarkable with the sequel trilogy, which is make something that pretty much everyone dislikes for a variety of different reasons. That said, I'm all for letting a thousand (Star Wars) flowers bloom, figuring that of that 20% will be good, and 5% will be great.

Re: [Film] Star Wars Phase Four
My favorite Star Wars movie from the trilogies is still Empire Strikes Back (no outlier there). I am in the rare camp of people who think both the prequel and sequel trilogies are underrated. (Though none of the trilogies - including the original trilogy - are perfect.) Rogue One is my favorite Star Wars movie, which I doubt will ever be topped. Andor, is of course excellent, but I would rate season 1 slightly below Rogue One (in my heart), but that's hardly fair since it's not finished yet. Can't wait for season 2.
Howver, I also always recommend the animated series Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Bad Batch. Clone Wars is indeed a LOT of Star Wars to watch, and not all of it is great. Though very little of it outright sucks.) But, Ahsoka is such an awesome character, and I still will die on the hill of my opinion that the best Star Wars - EVER - is the final 4 episodes of the Clone Wars. But, you really need to have watched the entirety of the show before that to truly appreciate the culimnation of the many story arcs in those 4 amazing episodes. All 3 of those animated shows tell compelling stories and I highly endorse them. Clone Wars also makes the prequel trilogy a lot better.
But that's all just one idiot's opinion!

I dunno, man. I've spawned 3 so far . . . .
(And that will be all, just so we're clear.)

I think Force Awakens and Last Jedi are both good standalone movies (though Rise of Skywalker is hot garbage). The core problem with the sequel trilogy is that none of it fits together as a trilogy (that and doing a reboot for Episode 7 kind of washed away all the effects of the original trilogy).JCC wrote: ↑Mon Nov 18, 2024 2:48 pm My favorite Star Wars movie from the trilogies is still Empire Strikes Back (no outlier there). Also Ewan McGregor was really good as Obi-Wan in the prequels.

I've softened my view on the prequel trilogy over the years, mainly by accepting Lucas' dubious claim that Phantom Menace was made for children. I question why you would make a kids movie centered around blockades and trade disputes, but whatever. At least Lucas understood that trilogies are a continuous cohesive story, and not three random movies slapped together with no plan.
I will never forgive Disney for botching the sequel trilogy as badly as they did. It's not rocket science. Why the hell you would decide to just wing the story and make it up as you go along is beyond human comprehension. Arguably the most important IP in cinematic history, and your idea is "well, I guess we'll just make one movie and see where it goes..." Really?

Making it up as it went along is pretty much how the original trilogy was done as well. Obviously, they could have done better, but I still like all 3 of the sequel trilogy movies. Again I see way more to like than dislike in all 9 of the trilogy movies. And, I can pick nits with all of them too. Re: [Film] Star Wars Phase Four
I think it's the result of studios general aversion to taking risk, which manifests in making things as similar to something that people already bought as possible. So they hired an established director (Abrams) to make a movie that everyone bought and liked already (A New Hope), and figured they would just figure everything else out from there.YellowKing wrote: ↑Mon Nov 18, 2024 4:43 pm I've softened my view on the prequel trilogy over the years, mainly by accepting Lucas' dubious claim that Phantom Menace was made for children. I don't hate the newest trilogy, and yeah - I'd say it's underrated. The prequel trilogy is frequently uncomfortable, but much of that discomfort can be eliminated by simply skipping The Phantom Menace, which I find borderline unwatchable.

That's what I'm talking about right there It's an awkward mismash of stuff. Not doing enough to build itself up in terms of a legacy, but entirely content to grab what it can from the OT. It's as if the ST had been designed by a madlib generator.El Guapo wrote: ↑Mon Nov 18, 2024 3:52 pm
