It's pretty well established that the "big 4" of thrash are Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer.
would Testament and Exodus be included in the 'next lower tier'
For sure. They’re the “first two out”, in March Madness terms. As I go back and listen to “Bonded By Blood”, it always amazes me that Metallica blew up and Exodus didn’t. It’s arguably a far better album than either “Kill Em All” or “Ride the Lightning”.
Suffocation, Deicide, Carcass, and Possessed are first out on the death metal side of the bracket.
Where were Death Angel? I prefer them much more than Testament or Exodus.

Death Angel and Overkill are the other two. third tier? D.R.I, Mercyful Fate, Possessed... ??
I was listening to the soundtrack for the game The Yawhg on YouTube, and it suggested this song by the same singer, Halina Heron. If you like melancholic music, enjoy!

On today's run/walk I listened to Iron Savior - Condition Red.
While I'd love to hear new metal from her at some point, I love Myrkur's new album of Scandinavian folk music.

Nice. We used to listen to that first album and then Animosity back-to-back every day before we went skating pools in 1988.

The new Oranssi Pazuzu album is a delightful bit of weirdness. Reminds me of Thy Catafalque or Ihsahn's solo stuff, or as the YouTube commenter very accurately summed it up, "It's like if ghost fucked Abbath with a flute"

Speaking of untimely deaths, I can't believe it's been seven years since Jason Molina died at the age of 39. I remember posting about it on Facebook like it was yesterday.

My marketing director just sent out the following email:
"Music makes everyone happy and I have found that some of the most enjoyable times I have had recently have been around watching musicians stream concerts, sharing timely songs with friends, or reminiscing about songs I grew up listening to.
Thinking of that, I want to create a playlist for our next "Faces of COMPANY" (a newsletter-thing we send out). I would like to invite you all to send one song to the team and I will create and share our playlist. There are no rules, the song can be what you are feeling now, something that makes you smile, whatever!
Looking forward to listening to all your songs!
I feel like I have a unique opportunity to expand the musical horizons of my team here. So many choices though...

Khemmis is awesome, and that’s an excellent cover. They released a new EP this week, and that was on there along with a live version of “Three Gates”, which is my favorite song of theirs.
Also heard that Wilderun finally got signed to a label this week (Century Media). Thrilled for those dudes, although I’m absolutely baffled at how it took so long. Their last two albums are easily the best American metal in the last decade.

I just discovered a series called "Metal Evolution" that is a fantastic documentary about different styles and genres of metal. The host, Sam Dunn, does an absolutely stellar job of exploring each genre, with interviews from band members, live clips, and other assorted insights. I watched the "Extreme Metal" one last night, and really enjoyed it. He does episodes for Grunge, Thrash, Power Metal, Shock Rock, Prog, NWoBHM, etc. Can't quite bring myself to suffer through the Nu-metal episode.
It's a wonderful series for those who enjoy metal.
