I really only worry about heavy movies with complicated plots and such.
If star wars was released now I could probably watch it as it was released. There just aren't a lot of details I would need to remember from film to film.
Same with the Marvel movies. Just need a vague understanding of each one.
From what I remember of the original dune movie there were a lot of important plot points. Spreading it over 2 movies meand I need by closer attention to it.
If you say that the 2nd movie doesn't end in a cliffhanger then we can watch it and hope that if/when the 3rd drops i don't need to remember too many details or if it's really far away I'll wait for streaming and watch all 3 at once.
you're overthinking it:
the second Dune book (Dune Messiah) came out a few years after the original, so there is a recap of sorts included. i am sure the movie version will do the same.
Villaneuve does make the implied post-events of his adaptation pretty clear (without overly hitting you over the head with them) so the need for Dune Messiah is lessened. (i'm pretty sure Herbert primarily wrote the sequel because people were completely misinterpreting the point of the original story...)

Paul is a hero, right? That's the main thing I remember.
I only remember parts of the original.
There was a lot of sand.
And big worms but no big fish
There was knife fights against people with Minecraft styled shields.
I think there was s rock star in it but can't remember what song he sang in it.

Oh and Paul complained about how sand is rough and gets everywhere, right?

Forgot that. Also he was the chosen one. I think he had a high midichlorian count or something because he got powers.
