I wouldn't be surprised to learn that a Utah bill to ban "porn in schools" is aimed at thwarting sex education that deals frankly with contraception and non-missionary non-procreative non-hetero sex.malchior wrote: Tue Feb 23, 2021 6:49 pm Super weird note on that. Companies that provide digital services to K-12 Utah public schools could see new porn filtering contract clauses under a proposal that earned committee approval on Friday.
HB38 would require the providers of digital services and products used by Utah public schools to have mechanisms in place to block all “obscene or pornographic material,” according to bill language. And failure to successfully block such content, or quickly address any issues of explicit material making it past filtering mechanisms, could lead to loss of payment or contract termination.
The proposal’s sponsor, Rep. Travis Seegmiller, R-St. George, said his bill was crafted to help keep companies from inadvertently blocking appropriate content and avoiding practices that could be characterized as censorship or “book burning.”
...
Committee members voted unanimously to advance HB38 to the full House for that body’s consideration.

I'm sure that will work out fine. These companies have been holding back their flawless filters for just such an opportunity.

South Dakota AG admitted to police he was reading Joe Biden conspiracy theories while driving, he at some point hit a man, the man came through windshield, the AG left him to die on side of road, and the body wasn't found until the next morning. He has so far been charged with 3 misdemeanors not related to the man's death. Unreal.

Re: Political Randomness
WaPo
Days after South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg fatally struck a man while driving in September, detectives told the Republican official they had found a pair of broken reading glasses inside his Ford Taurus. They belonged to the man he killed.
That was a problem, detectives said, because Ravnsborg, 44, said he didn’t know he had hit a man until the following day, when he returned to the scene and found the body of Joseph Boever, 55, in a ditch.
“They’re Joe’s glasses, so that means his face came through your windshield,” one of the detectives said in an interview released by the South Dakota Department of Public Safety on Tuesday.
...
Last week, prosecutors announced three misdemeanor charges against Ravnsborg. If found guilty of all charges, Ravnsborg could face up to 90 days in jail and $1,500 in damages.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

What's galling is his defense continues to be he thought he hit a deer. If you have the time to watch the video, it's clear he is lying to the police. They essentially pull a tacit admission out of him of the whole thing. Yet he is digging in - probably because he has a belief that his wealth and power will act as a shield. We'll see.

I guess - IMO he is screwed in a civil suit. The video sinks him. He should have far more criminal liability tbh. That he is only charged with misdemeanors is outrageous considering the video. I expect that is why they released it because even the police are like...this is fucking bullshit people.Isgrimnur wrote: Fri Feb 26, 2021 12:39 pm I mean, he's only been charged with misdemeanors, and probably won't spend a day in jail.

The video is hard to watch as the police describe what happened to the victim during the accident and where they were finding parts of him inside the vehicle. The victim walking was on the shoulder with a flashlight that was on and shone "like a beacon". Ravnsborg killed him while he was going 65mph+ down the road, reading on his phone.malchior wrote: Fri Feb 26, 2021 12:32 pmWhat's galling is his defense continues to be he thought he hit a deer. When I watch these videos I don't know how cops can remain composed and continue trying to coax details and confessions out of people by being friendly and pretending to be an ally to them. When you're sitting 2 feet from someone who's giving you graphic details about how they abused children or murdered people... I don't think I'd be very friendly. I don't think I'd be an investigator for very long at all.
The hole this guy digs himself into is impressive, doubly so when you consider his position. I would expect someone familiar with the law to never even have sat for an interview.
That should leave the door open to something like vehicular manslaughter, yes?malchior wrote: Fri Feb 26, 2021 12:18 pmHe has so far been charged with 3 misdemeanors not related to the man's death.

Capitol Police officer suspended after a congressional aide spotted a copy of the 'The Protocols of the Elders of Zion' binder clipped in his work area. WUT?
U.S. Capitol Police suspended an officer Monday after a copy of an infamous antisemitic tract was found near a Capitol Hill security post Sunday, alarming a congressional aide who viewed the document in plain sight at the checkpoint.
Photographs provided to The Washington Post show a printed copy of the Protocols of the Meetings of the Learned Elders of Zion on a table inside an entrance of the Longworth House Office Building.
The Post provided the photographs to the Capitol Police on Monday morning and requested comment. The department said Monday evening that acting chief Yogananda Pittman had suspended an officer pending an investigation “after anti-Semitic reading material was discovered near his work area on Sunday.”
“We take all allegations of inappropriate behavior seriously,” Pittman said in the statement. “Once this matter was brought to my attention, I immediately ordered the officer to be suspended until the Office of Professional Responsibility can thoroughly investigate.”

So apparently if you swing the needle far enough to the left it comes back around to Fascism. I unequivocally do not support anti-Semitism but this feels intrinsically wrong and a slippery slope. The articles available don't offer much detail other than to quote “We take all allegations of inappropriate behavior seriously...", so simply reading objectionable material is now inappropriate behavior? Was the officer known to make anti-Semitic comments or behave in a manner that indicated they were racist? I suppose the case could be made that it was found in the workplace but this feels very akin to book banning/burning.malchior wrote: Mon Mar 15, 2021 7:11 pm Capitol Police officer suspended after a congressional aide spotted a copy of the 'The Protocols of the Elders of Zion' binder clipped in his work area. If you're going to read problematic material, for whatever reason, perhaps don't do it at work and visible in a manner in which the people whom you serve might see it and find it objectionable, regardless of context. Especially when you are a public employee who has the power of life and death hanging from their belt and working in the nation's capitol.
It's almost as if people are the problem.
