FCC Chair Throws Water on Crazy Plan for Feds to Seize Control of Our 5G WiFi
I oppose any proposal for the federal government to build and operate a nationwide 5G network. The main lesson to draw from the wireless sector's development over the past three decades—including American leadership in 4G—is that the market, not government, is best positioned to drive innovation and investment. What government can and should do is to push spectrum into the commercial marketplace and set rules that encourage the private sector to develop and deploy next-generation infrastructure. Any federal effort to construct a nationalized 5G network would be a costly and counterproductive distraction from the policies we need to help the United States win the 5G future.
Not too surprising a statement. It would certainly undercut his golden payout on his way out the revolving door at the FCC back into industry.

That's not really fair - he's been in government since 2004 and has 4 years left on his term. I think his ideas are abhorrent, but there is no evidence he's doing it simply because he wants a private sector job.

I can see how that is taken. It was meant as a joke...as admittedly cynical as it is.

That was painfully unfunny, rehashing the same jokes about W.
I'm pretty sure that was the whole point. Painfully rehashed bad jokes are a better choice than Trump.
I thought it was hilarious. Pouting, stereotypically humorless Republicans probably did not find it amusing, however (news at 11!).

Nothing about McCabe being forced out at the FBI? The White House says it wasn’t involved in the decision, so I guess all of Trump’s tweets about McCabe and the report that came out last week about Trump asking McCabe who he voted for is all just a coincidence.

It's breaking now that Wray pressured McCabe to resign after pressure from Trump. That possibly sends a clear message to the rank and file. Not authoritarian at all.
Also this nugget - classy as always.

I'm kind of surprised that they're going to recall the tickets, as opposed to just having Trump give a "State of the Uniom" speech, and then insist that that's the proper term.

I somehow missed this but Tom Nichol's
review of Trump's first year is pretty much on point.
Trump has deprived the presidency of its majesty, its gravity and its ability to inspire. In doing so, he has distilled the role of executive power to its elemental minimum as an almost purely destructive force. When Trump talks policy, he is ignored. But he is still the most powerful man in the world, so there is no avoiding him when he seems bent on creating havoc.

I, for one, enjoy my teeth gnashing as it makes me feel a sense of patriotism I've never felt before to oppose someone as un-American as Trump. I certainly do weep for the damage he's caused to everything he's touched and the future we're handing our children.
I'm not sure why someone would want to enjoy that unless they were dead inside and looking to fill the void with the suffering of others... or "Republican" in today's parlance.
We need a third party for all the sane, displaced Republicans to land. They don't need to identify as "Democrat" or "Independent" but I can't imagine anyone being proud to be what the party has turned into lately.

We could launch a "Fiscal" party for all the Republicans that actually want fiscal responsibility. That should give them enough to build from. It would also preclude anyone who has been cozying up to Trump.

And of course, Pruitt released this statement after the hearing:
“After meeting him, and now having the honor of working for him, it is abundantly clear that President Trump is the most consequential leader of our time. No one has done more to advance the rule of law than President Trump. The President has liberated our country from the political class and given America back to the people.”

I love how all the State of the Union talk has been about how Trump wants to strike a bipartisan tone. Seriously? After all the shit he has done over the past year he has the gall to stand up before the American people and call for bipartisanship. Fuck you, Trump. I wouldn't watch that ape's speech if you paid me.

I am pre-disgusted by all the inevitable political punditry about Trump exceeding (super low) expectations with this speech, while gliding over the horrible content of the speech.

My 8th-grader is required to watch the SOTU for school, so I'll watch it with him. I'm definitely not looking forward to it.
He reports that (to their credit) 97% of his classmates believe Trump is full of bullshit and evil. Class discussion should be interesting.

Reports are Stephen Miller is the speechwriter on this. I'm sure it'll be bipartisan as hell. No wait. I actually expect it'll be full of batshit moments that'll have me hiding under the covers tonight.

IIRC, Trump's first presidential speech on immigration (also written by Miller) hit bipartisan notes and took everyone by surprise with its apparent shift away from the racism of the campaign. Then, of course, the actual policies (also written by Miller) came along.
Expect the same tonight.

Yeah, although the last SOTU also was where Trump called for creation of the office on immigrant crime. There's going to be scary shit like that, but pundits are going to focus on the style of the speech (and whether it sounded nice).
