Thanks Smoove. I was just coming to grips with what was coming, and then you drop the mosquito bomb. We live in Florida. Not only are the mosquitoes everywhere, but mosquito control is constantly talking about the diseases they spread in our community.

I've really been trying to focus on the helpers today as that does make me feel better. I'm inspired by the human spirit and I'm genuinely hopeful we're going to get this all sorted out. But it's going to take a herculean effort and a level of entrepreneurial mentality that likely hasn't been seen for 75+ years.

A little something for everyone today. Where's my lab test nerd crew? $iljanus? A serological assay to detect SARS-CoV-2 seroconversion in humans:
These assays were developed with negative control samples representing pre-COVID 19 background immunity in the general population and samples from COVID19 patients. Results: The assays are sensitive and specific, allowing for screening and identification of COVID19 seroconverters using human plasma/serum as early as 3 days post symptom onset. Importantly, these assays do not require handling of infectious virus, can be adjusted to detect different antibody types and are amendable to scaling. Conclusion: Serological assays are of critical importance to determine seroprevalence in a given population, define previous exposure and identify highly reactive human donors for the generation of convalescent serum as therapeutic. Sensitive and specific identification of coronavirus SARS-Cov-2 antibody titers will also support screening of health care workers to identify those who are already immune and can be deployed to care for infected patients minimizing the risk of viral spread to colleagues and other patients.
Created by a multi-national team. So I guess Trump will be taking credit for it tomorrow?

You are never going to believe what Devin Nunes said about coronavirus and the media
Just a few days removed from suggesting that people should take advantage of the light crowds due to coronavirus and go out to eat and then blaming the media for reporting that he said what he said, the California Republican gave a long interview Wednesday with local conservative radio host Ray Appleton on the topic.
"But I will just say, one of the things you can do, if you're healthy, you and your family, it's a great time to just go out, go to a local restaurant, likely you can get in, get in easily."
And then, in response to the outcry, he told Sean Hannity this:
"What I was saying is you have empty restaurants. You can go through the drive-thru, you can do take-out. It's a great place to go. The media freaks can do [what] they want."

Republicans. Republicans never change. No money for you, Daehawk! (probably -- IDK your situation in detail or if this plan will pass).
Senate Republicans have now released their hotly anticipated proposal to send families direct cash payments, as part of a wider economic aid package aimed at combating the coronavirus crisis. And hoo boy is it disappointing.

Under the plan, the government would provide households an early tax rebate worth up to $1,200 for an individual or $2,400 for a married couple, with an extra $500 for each of their children. (So far, so good). The payments will be based on a household’s 2018 tax return, or if it didn’t submit one, their 2019 filing.

But the checks will shrink for both low- and high-earners. Americans with little-to-no tax liability—aka, poor folks—will only receive a minimum payment of $600, unless they earned less than $2,500, in which case they get zilch. My early reading of the bill is that low-wage workers who simply don’t file federal tax returns—adults generally aren’t required if they earn less than the standard deduction—also won’t qualify. (Seth Hanlon, a tax and budget expert at the Center for American Progress, agreed.) Meanwhile, the payments phase down for workers who make more than $75,000, and drop to zero for those making $99,000 and above (double those numbers for joint filers).

One caveat on the praise is that Burr is not beloved in Trumpworld because he didn't fully protect Trump during the Russia investigation - he never went full Nunes.

On the other hand, how does NC replace its senators? I know NC has a democratic governor now. But even if they hold a special election, a special election in NC wouldn't be a gimme for the GOP, especially now.

Entire state of California on lockdown.
What can I do? What’s open?

Essential services will remain open such as:

Gas stations
Pharmacies
Food: Grocery stores, farmers markets, food banks, convenience stores, take-out and delivery restaurants
Banks
Laundromats/laundry services

Essential state and local government functions will also remain open, including law enforcement and offices that provide government programs and services.
What’s closed?

Dine-in restaurants
Bars and nightclubs
Entertainment venues
Gyms and fitness studios
Public events and gatherings
Convention Centers

Where does this apply?

This is in effect throughout the State of California.
See you soon. Signed, NY and NJ.

I would assume drive-up windows are under the umbrella of "take out". Based on what I've seen in NJ, any place serving food can remain open as long as they're explicitly prohibiting "dine in" as an option. Take out/Pickup/Delivery all viable.

EDIT: No worries. It's a legit question. Shit is crazy.

I'm really happy that Governor Cooper locked NC down early, while we only had a couple dozen confirmed cases. I'm hoping beyond hope that the quick action is going to pay big dividends down the road. While it's not quite as strict as CA's, given non-essential businesses are still allowed to remain open, it was a lot more than many other states were doing that early. I'm really hoping it will be enough.

IMHO, the most important lesson of this pandemic will be that you can't simply shut everything down for months anytime a dangerous new ailment appears. The economic damage will be too great. We desperately need to find ways for most businesses to stay open during future epidemics.
Hijacking to R&P.

It comes down to the calculus of the value of human life. We lose >35k per year in terms of automobile accidents, which represents only 20% of the overall accident rate

The COVID-19 death rate in Italy is close to 8%.
On March 6, the US had the highest death rate — about 6% — among countries with more than 100 cases. Italy's death rate at the time was about half of what it was on Tuesday.
These numbers are higher than the 1918 flu, which was a massive shock to the world as a whole, even when dealing with WWI.

Give it another week or so. Some of the underpopulated states might skate by, but the clampdown is inevitable everywhere else.

I expect MA to follow early next week. I'm planning another grocery run tomorrow, and Wife insists that she must clean out her office while she still can (she's changing jobs at the end of the month), so it looks like we're going to make a foray into the city as well. No traffic and ample on-street parking in Kendall Square is going to be eerie.

I will say the numbers are at least somewhat incomplete without an assessment of how it differed from their usual trading. I would tend to assume (though it's not out of the question) that Burr selling $1.6 million in stock was unusual. $450,000 might be for Inhofe, though it's hard to say. Also matters whether the sales were directed, or whether they were part of some automatic plan.

It seems like if you sensed a pandemic was possible, you might make a move to liquidate, even without any “insider” information. Wouldn’t it be incredibly hard to prove otherwise?

I mean we all know that being a duplicitous asshole is par for the course these days, so I hardly think there’d be much legal leverage to go after him for him telling the public one thing, then doing something entirely different. They do that every day.

Democrats would cry foul, GOP would say it’s business as usual, everyone would retreat to their tribal camps, and it would be forgotten. Isn’t that the way it works now?

:?:

Isn't the story from *today*? How can they poll that quickly?

(This is because everyone's at home, bored, and willing to respond to any telephone call, isn't it?)

So...the people that vote then? Basically that's who gets it? I wonder why that would be? And why exclude the group of people you know aren't going to vote for you anyway?

Mystifying.

And it hasn't broken the Top 20 on Google yet but what's the over /under on 'martial law' trending in the next 2 days?
I'm seeing it spelled Marshal Law. But please, call it shelter-in-place...soon with National Guards!
