Octopus Overlords

Caught Gogol Bordello and Flogging Molly last week. It's the first time I've been out in a loooong time.

1) Gogol Bordello put on a week show until their 3 song encore, which was the GB I've come to know and love. I don't know if they've changed their game or if they were deferring to Flogging Molly.

2) FM were great but I'm a little surprised at their evolving set. "Black Friday Rule" for instance was no where to be found and the Whistle the Wind album is no longer the emphasis of their show.


I stood for most of over four hours and my back wasn't killing me. I *really* need to get out more if my back can take a whole evening again. That's the first time in years this has been the case.

I recover worse and worse for the next day though. Having been jelly fish in jelly fish heaven for the last few years, not only did a get the bad hang over but my calves and lower legs felt like they had been through a major work out the next two days simply from the act of standing for four hours.

Contemplating adding Van Halen to the Summer of Old Fogies pack - anyone seen them recently? With Jr and DLR fronting again? Is it worth it for someone who hasn't seen them before?

Did you catch Mariachi El Bronx? They seem like they would be fun live...


Tonight is Melvins with Le Butcherettes opening. I'm stoked!

Spent last night discovering Le Butcherettes. They're a Mexican garage/punk band fronted by a girl who looks like she knows how to put on a show. Very much looking forward!

I enjoyed the few minutes of El Mariachi the Bronx that I caught. The went on stage promptly at 19:00 and we though doors were at 19:00.

As a huge Van Halen from back in the day, I'm not sure I'd be too excited about this. Dave's voice is shot, and they'll completely ignore the Hagar years in the show. There's also something weird about seeing Eddie and Dave palling it up on stage when you know they can't stand each other off stage. (Compared to one time when I saw the Black Crowes play, and Rich and Chris Robinson seemed to be going out of their way to antagonize one another - much more enjoyable!)

Ya, just look at their recent Jimmy Kimmel performance and that will give you the answer.

Just saw the dead at Levi's. Quite a show, but transportation still sucks, in and out.

tonight was The B-52s at the local zoo (on Pride weekend). this was one of the very first concerts i ever missed (they played at the Minnesota State Fair in 1992 with Violent Femmes, but i didn't have the transportation to get there), so i'm glad i finally made up for it. no Keith on tour and no "Quiche Lorraine", but it was a very fun show. and they played at least one track from all of the albums!

Veruca Salt tomorrow night. Will there be anyone in the audience under age 35??? I'm trying not to care.

It was a great concert, mostly middle-aged folks like me, but very enthused middle-aged folks. My overall take was much like the first time I saw Veruca Salt at the Metro 21 years ago -- damn these ladies can rock. Their albums emphasize melody and harmony, but live they are a dense wall of crunchy guitars.

Saw Lord Huron again tonight. Loved it. Next show I'll probably see is JD McPherson in September.

I have a couple shows coming up this fall/winter I'm looking forward to.

August is Alice in Chains
December is Machine Head

Saw Rush a few weeks back. First time seeing them inside and I loved it.

How was it?

Well I've been listening to him since the mid-80s (when I was embarrassed about it) and I'm easily entertained, but I'd say it was incredible. I'd never seen him and my jaw was on the floor with how well it was done. I don't want to spoil anything, but he went way past expectations. All I'll tell you was that there is a lot of dead time on stage between costumes and setups, but they totally occupied it with a huge screen playing montages of samples of just about every time he's ever been in any media anywhere. It was incredibly well edited and integrated into the show.

Just back from the best half of the Tossers at the Abbey Pub.

Usual awesome plus 2 new songs.

I don't know what you people are doing wrong. My son's first concert was a St. Patrick's Day street party with Collective Soul 10 years ago when he was 6. His second was a crawdad festival in the street with Drivin' N' Cryin'. His third was a $100 second row seat to Mark Knopfler. Maybe it's because I have a boy.

Went to see Ace Frehley.
Blended right in with the crowd.....

Yep, look at my first post to start this thread.

My son was 7 when we took him to Iron Maiden. By the time he was 10, he had been to see GWAR, Opeth, and Slayer with me. I think having a boy matters. He's not into metal as much, but he still goes to most shows with me.

And BTW, one of my favorite college memories was going to a bar and having Driving N Crying show up and play. They killed it!

We have some pretty funny pictures of my son at about age 12, with Kevn Kinney of Drivin' N' Cryin' acting like my son is giving him advice about something.

The show was actually pretty impressive. As we walked in they handed each of us a little plastic bracelt that did nothing until the show started - then they lit up to match the color scheme of the lightshow. They changed colors and at points only the floor or the stands were lit. It was clever and looked amazing:



She was backed by a live band but her vocals were clearly helped by some backing tracks. In the middle of the show she did "Mean" solo on acoustic guitar as if to remind everyone that she can actually perform without all the tomfoolery behind her.

I'm not sure if my fiance or Elise did more dancing but I know Elise will remember this weekend for a long time:



The crowd was sort of the inverse of the Rush show - 80% female and under 25. At least it made for short lines in the men's restroom.

I was not implying you shouldn't take her to her favorite artist. I was explicitly stating that you shouldn't let her like that artist

Just kidding of course. I don't even try to discuss music objectively because it doesn't work. I mean compared to popular music, there is an absolute measurable quality about movies. Which of course there really isn't. Which is my point about music.

Oh, and along those lines, as much as I think Christian music is the ghetto of the music biz (and I'm a Christian, and I wore out the music myself 20 years ago), I had to admit that the Skillet/Third Day concert I took my son to was actually one of the best put together 5-hour shows I've ever seen. Too bad the musical talent didn't match the staging, presentation, and pace IMHO.

And I was naturally joking. I'm thankful my son doesn't like some of the popular music that I can't personally stomach. As a parent, you take one for the team for your kids and do things like this.

Both Ghost and Allegaeon are playing here on Oct 28. Now I have to decide which one to see.

Leaning towards Ghost, as Allegaeon is going a co-headling show with Act of Defiance (a "supergroup" of ex-Megadeth, Scar the Martyr, and Shadows Fall members) who I don't care for much.

Never found the appeal of Ghost

Do like Allegaeon and Act of Defiance though

Next week I'm seeing Tinariwen for the 3rd time.
Last time I saw them I could have licked the one of the band member's toes if I had wanted to (2nd from left).
I'll be in the balcony this time though.

I'd love to see Ghost...such a spectacle...
