Just got off the 70000 Tons of Metal cruise. Holy shit, what a ride.
We saw 32 different bands. Met people from 12 countries and 14 states. Danced a folk metal jig with a storm trooper and a guy in a banana suit on the top deck of a cruise ship at 3:30am. Watched a mosh pit in a hot tub. Ate too much, slept far too little (earliest to bed in the last four days: 4am). Met a ton of band members just hanging around the ship. Fleshgod Apocalypse joined us at our table for lunch, we chatted with At The Gates in the customs line, Gregor and Hamish from Vallenfyre sat down with us for a drink before their set, I confirmed my suspicion that Dani Filth is an total douchecanoe, and bumped into quite a few others as well.
Best band: Turisas, with Epica coming in a far distant second.
Worst band: Dead Cross (Dave Lombardo's new band, sadly awful)
I knew this was going to be fun, but I was fully unprepared for the level of awesome chaos that ensued. In a word: EPIC.

Pretty much my experience from 2 years ago.
Any metal karaoke? That was my favorite part.

No, and I'm bummed about it. We were planning on doing it on the last night because shows were supposed to be done by 1am. Unfortunately, there was a huge storm and they had to close the top pool deck. They then had to shuffle around all the shows, so we didn't get out of Turisas until 4am. I was gassed by then and had to try and catch a couple hours of sleep.

For sure do not miss. His solo sets are fun. I like the karaoke parts of the show, where he does covers set to prerecorded backing tracks - one time it was Nirvana "In Bloom" and Morphine "Cure for Pain".

Took the wife to see Garth Brooks last night (tickets were her Christmas gift if you recall).
Phenomenal show - it jumped to my top five concerts of all time, easily. Maybe even top 3. Even at 54, he ran and jumped around on stage all night like he was still in his 20s (though he did occasionally make some jokes about being older and out of shape). You wouldn't know it from the show, though.
Vocally he was just as good as he's ever been. The crowd was raucous, and he took great delight in firing everyone up. Telling the crowd that he understood that people go to concerts "to hear the old stuff," he launched into a whirlwind of greatest hits spanning his career. His wife Trisha Yearwood joined him on stage for a duet, and sang several songs in the middle of the 2 1/2 hour plus show.
The encore was particularly interesting - he played requests from the audience including some deep cuts he doesn't typically play live, then launched into a few covers of artists that inspired him - Bob Seger's "Turn the Page," James Taylor's "Carolina in My Mind," George Strait's "Amarillo By Morning." Incredible entertainer, and if you have even the most passing familiarity with his music I highly recommend seeing him on tour.

I don't really mean to put any damper on your enthusiasm because I can objectively admire a well put together show, but all that would have done for me is make me want to see James Taylor and George Strait again. I'm just not a fan, and wasn't in the 90s either, even when I was going to middlin' crap like Joe Diffie, Tracy Lawrence, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Little Texas shows, usually to see someone better on the bill (Travis Tritt, Martina McBride, Suzy Bogguss). This was at the same time I was seeing Charlie Daniels, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, George Strait, and Alan Jackson, though, so while you can tell I prefer enduring outlaw country, there were folks in there that would make you think I'd like Garth Brooks. I never could stand him. I'm glad you had a good time. I sure like some stuff that others can't stand.
My take-one-for-the-Valentine's-present show was Amy Grant and Steven Curtis Chapman. Never liked Steven Curtis Chapman, but at least as a performer, he's not as deep in the musical ghetto as most radio CCM. Enjoyed Amy Grant, who was trying to add a different flavor to the show, but she was never on stage without SCC.

Speaking of baby... I have two
baby (paying under $100 for 2 tickets) concerts lined up for the upcoming weeks.
The
Subdudes. We are staying overnight and looked around the area for entertainment. Think these guys will be entertaining.
Here Comes The Sun: A Musical and Spiritual Tribute to George Harrison in New York, featuring Godfrey Townsend. Absolutely randy for this event.

About 3 years ago when Ethan was 3 we were driving home from a day excursion at Big Trees in Calaveras County in the Sierra Nevadas. If you are ever up that way you have to go. The trees are one of the biggest in the world. While driving home, we were listening to Toby Mac. You may or not heard of him, he's a christian artist, started out in dcTalk and a long while back they broke up and each went solo. TobyMac is extremely popular in the Christian music world, and is very fun to listen to. Anyways, while driving back on the country roads he started singing along to one of his songs. It was really the first time we heard him sing to anything on the radio and actually knew the words. Since then it's all he listens too.
TobyMac came to Sacramento a few years ago when he was in preschool, but it was a school night and we didn't think he'd stay awake that night, so we decided to not take him. This last Sunday he was back and it was also on a school night. I convinced my wife to let him go and we gave it to him as his birthday present. It was his first concert and he absolutely loved it. He pretty much knew every song and we had fun singing along, dancing and having a great time together. I was a huge dctalk fan back in the day and continued following them in their solo projects, and it was great to share that experience with my son.

No worries. My wife is a bigger fan than I was, though I did listen to his greatest hits back in the day.
The interesting thing about Garth Brooks is that he took such a long time off (essentially nearly two decades) to raise his kids. So in that time he wasn't really making new music or doing anything of note.
Yet he can come back on tour and sell out an arena three nights in a row. That's amazing to me.

Finally got a chance to see Behemoth last night. They're exactly as their name suggests: massive and terrifying. They played their last album,
The Satanist, in it's entirety, then did three encores. A truly fantastic show
However, it was the opener Myrkur that was more interesting. The waifish blonde woman with a
voice that could blow the doors off the building mesmerized an entire room full of fans of one of the most extreme metal bands on the planet. She did a couple acapella numbers during which you could have heard a pin drop. She closed with a cover of Bathory's
Song To Hall Up High" that literally had people in tears. I've never seen anything quite like it before.
I knew she'd be good (I was a big fan of her debut album last year), but she was captivating in a way I've never experienced at a metal show before.

Yeah, not sure why I've never seen Behemoth... they are awesome live, I'm sure you can concur. Really like the Satanist album.
Gojira is headlining this fall, I'll be seeing them in October. This might be my most anticipated show this year.
My wife likes Rob Zombie and Korn, so I'll be taking her to see them later in the summer. I have a mild desire to see Korn, so I'll enjoy that show.
I'd really like to see Heart/Joan Jett/Cheap Trick at Red Rocks this fall, but it's sold out already and $100+ a ticket might prevent me from seeing that.
Summer Slaughter 2016 is hinting at Cannibal Corpse/Nile co-headlining that tour, so I might hit that up as well.
Denver Riot Fest hasn't announced the lineup yet, but the last couple years they've had some really good acts, so I'll probably be going to atleast one day of that festival.
More to come as summer approaches so we'll see.

They just announced a SLC show the day before Denver (13th, I think). I might go check it out. I absolutely loved
The Way of All Flesh, but was really underwhelmed by
L'Enfant Sauvage. Will see if their new one floats my boat before grabbing tickets.

Probably going to regret not going. The Satanist is my favorite album by them and still listen to it regularly.

for some reason the Napalm Death/Melvins/Melt Banana show sold out and i was unable to attend. (i was also unable to obtain a satisfactory price from people trying to resell their tickets.) going to the rescheduled Tanya Tagaq event two weeks from now, and John Carpenter in a few weeks (
that new album from last year had some pretty fun tracks).

Considering a
trip to the desert. Not really a festival person, but the lure of seeing all these acts in one place is pretty strong. I've seen them all individually many times, but never together
The bill reminds me of those old 60s posters where you would see these great acts together.

I'm assuming the show is done by 4:00 every day to allow concert goers to hit the early bird specials in town.

The Melvins in all their many different forms always sell out here. Of course the play small venues. Add Napalm Death to that ticket and I could instant sell out ticket hoarding and scalping happening.

My son and I have tickets to see Symphoria (formerly the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra) in concert next Saturday. They're doing a sci-fi show, which will mostly be Star Wars, but with a bunch of other familiar stuff thrown in. Some Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica (the old version, I assume, but I don't really know), Last Starfighter, etc.
If possible, we're going to try to scramble out of there and make it to another show the same night - this time a local Iron Maiden cover band named Powerslave, who are performing with a Heart cover band and an Alice in Chains cover band. It'll make for a long night, but we've seen Powerslave before and they're pretty good.

Speaking of, got tix to see Melvins here in August. Looking forward to it but it also made me realize that I don't see NEARLY enough shows anymore because the last show I went to was Melvins last June. Ah well, they are always great...always. And they always bring good openers with them. And it's at a great venue that features all MI micros on tap and like 25 pinball machines. One of my favorite venues ever...
I think this will make the fifth time seeing them...

Denver and Chicago Riot Fest lineup announced and other than The Misfits and Jane's Addiction, nothing at all there to make me go and sit for the two bands I like.
Probably for the better, I'm just too damn old for festivals any more.

There's a few that I like as holdovers from my punk/ska days (namely Bad Religion, NOFX, and The Aquabats), but any festival that includes "Hellzapoppin Circus Sideshow" I have to avoid on sheer principle.

I don't do festivals but Jane's + Misfits would be enough for me except the price for festivals is usually too much for me anyway.
Looking at Denver...
***Original Misfits
Death Cab for Cutie
***Jane's Addiction
Deftones
Descendents
***NOFX
***Bad Religion
Motion City Soundtrack.. I think... Hard to remember
***Sleigh Bells
***Suicidal Tendencies
***Me First & The Gimme Gimmes
Against Me!
F****d Up (obviously edited for editorial purposes)
***Juliette Lewis & The Licks
Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas
For a $130? If I had the energy, I'd be in. For sure not missing the *** groups. If there were conflicts in schedules to miss some of these bands, the less likely I would be to go.

I'll be at Riot Fest in Chicago. My boss is buying 3-day passes for everyone in the office this year.
The band I would most want to see (Wolf Parade) is only going to be playing Denver though.
I really hope it's not 90 degrees and sunny that day. I should be okay mid-September but it is Chicago.
