Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
We really should just turn this into the board gamers anonymous thread. I will go first.
Hi everyone, my name is Milton and I have a problem. I cannot stop buying board games. By the grace of God it has been 13 hours since my last purchase but only 5 hours since I last used. I am going to try to stay away from people that enable me to make bad choices on great games but it is just so darn hard. Anyone want to be my sponsor.
My family won't do an intervention for me.
Bought Cthulhu Gloom (only one they had) today as well as hive. Played some catan and phase 10 with one of my friend's family and after me and my friend got in a few games of hive. hive was money well spent but the jury is still out on gloom. Hopefully that will be settled tomorrow.

The latest RPS boardgaming column is great. It includes this observation, which rings very true to me:
The whole thing is worth a read.I think games connect us to a time when we had time. In your youth, time is elastic. You have exactly as much of it as you need. You have no responsibilities. No job, no children. Nothing but time, and friends, and shit to play with. When we play games now, as adults with too much stuff going on, we do so because we’ve made time for them. We’ve set time aside to indulge in some nonsense with people we love. When you make that time, you HAVE that time. And when you have that time, it’s like being back there – back in that place, that living room, that bedroom, that house full of memories. With time to spare, and everything exactly as it was.
When I play a game, It’s like peeking through the window into that house, and it delights me.

Played Eminent Domain and the new Arcana with hepcat and seppe last Thursday. The new Arcana seems to have some imprivement over the original, and was fun even though seppe and I kept getting into multi-turn ties. What is hit-or-miss in the game is the objectives. Since not all of the cards are in the game, you can get screwed by having some of the "collect 4" objectives being unachievable.
Eminent Domain is right up my alley. In concept, it's very similar to Race for the Galaxy. Each turn you choose from Explore (find a planet), Colonize, Military, Produce/Trade, and Technology. The other players can tag along (or dissent to draw a card), but you get a bonus for activating it. The difference is that you keep the card from the draw pile used to activate an option and spend those cards from your hand later to make the option more effective. If you time your plays right, you can have a hand full of 1 option and a deck filled with another to draw. In that way, it's something of a deck-building game, with technology being the cards you "buy" to play for cool actions or to have the flexibilty to boost 1 of 2 options.
It doesn't have much more interaction than Race for the Galaxy, mainly in the tag along or dissent options, the technology race and depleting the option cards. In a 2/3 player game will end when 1 option pile is depleted, or when produce/consume eat up the loose VPs. The 3/4 player game ends when 2 piles are depleted. That keeps the game running fast, so there's not much downtime between turns.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Thankfully Objectives are just an optional game variant and easily removed without affecting the game in any way whatsoever. I think I'll probably drop them from the game as I don't think they're as much as fun as the other variants in the box. Events are the ones I'm curious to try. You basically substitute the neutral stake card pile with a list of game play altering events that affect the turn you take them. Since the end game card (Jubilee) is located somewhere in the bottom 5 of the event deck, you have to go through it at some point.Zarathud wrote: What is hit-or-miss in the game is the objectives. The great thing about Arcana is that it's very modular when it comes to these things. The base game itself is just great, so you could even leave ALL of the 5 variants out of the game and still have quite a bit of fun.
And yes, Eminent Domain is a good game. I think I actually enjoy it a bit more than RftG, to be honest. But since I haven't played Race in a while, I could just be focusing on the new and the fresh.
In any case, I'm happy to have it in my collection.
Yesterday was a marathon gaming session for moi with a new group of folks that invited me to be the 6th in a full game of Here I Stand. Started off at 11am with a couple of games of 7 Wonders because the owner of the game slept in. Lost both...badly (last place both times...no surprise there ).
We started HIS around 2:30. One of the players (the Reformists) had to leave at 8, so that didn't leave much time. Even with a lunch that was a taco bar right next to the game table in order to avoid downtime, we still only made it to the end of turn 3 by the time we had to end it. Good lord, this is a long ass game.
I played the Papacy and most of my time was spent threatening (a hollow threat, to be honest) to excommunicate people or offering to make deals for the eventual requests from England for a divorce for Henry.
I did screw over the Ottomans at one point, and then felt kind of bad about it. He had amassed a large army on the borders of Southern Europe and was frighteningly close to Italy (the Papacy's seat of power), so I played a card that sent Suleiman all the way back to Istanbul. Without that leader's high command rating (which controls the number of troops you can move at one time and in one stack) he was essentially neutered. Since it was the third and last turn, I think he was ready to flip the table and beat me senseless. He wasn't an immediate threat, but I was playing the spirit of the game by looking at the long game...hordes of Muslims sweeping through Christendom is not something the Pope would historically have liked.
After that game, most of the folks had to go. Two stuck around though and humored me with a game of my beloved 51st State. I tried once again to make New York work, but that faction is rather weak in the early game.
I took second though as the Mutant's were helmed by a very capable player who caught on rather quickly...actually, both players caught on quickly and were coming up with combos that were quite good.
It was 12:30 by the time we finished up so I didn't even get to bed until almost 1:30. Needless to say, my tail is dragging today.

Very. Already shot them an email with the details. They're all friends of Mick's (who you met at the last octocon)...although he was the one playing the Ottoman's so he might be rethinking the get together now.hentzau wrote:These folks OctoCon worthy?

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
we played a game of Quarriors as a warm up to Merchants & Marauders. I lost both games.
Quarriors was 4 players, while Merchants & Marauders was a 3 player game.
Has anyone played Tales of the Arabian Nights ( http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/ ... ian-nights" target="_blank )?
I just ordered this last night. Been wanting it, and finally broke down and bought it. It sounds like it would be pretty fun(ny).

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Arabian Nights is a really neat activity, but it's really not a game. The whole thing is very random, and while you can make nominal choices as a player, you don't have much, if any, impact on whether you actually win or not.
Basically, think of it as the kind of thing you'd pull out as something to do at a small gathering while hanging around drinking. It does have some down time issues with more than 3-4, which is fine in the aforementioned "hanging around drinking" situation, but less awesome in a game night scenario. It's a unique story telling experience, and I quite like it, but it's not in the running for what to play when people come over specifically to game.

I can't imagine, even at my most inebriated, hearing a bouncer offering me an hour with a stripper for only $1,400 and thinking That sounds like a reasonable idea.-Two Sheds

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
I've heard Tales of the Arabian Nights described as a board game version of the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books. I've wanted to get it several times, but always chicken out. I'm fairly excited to play my review copy of Space Empires from GMT. Barring the upgrading of ship rule (it seems far less of a book-keeping nightmare to use the instant upgrade optional rule) the game look simple to learn but full of strategic choices. I'll probably try a solo scenario tomorrow. I'm also anxiously waiting for Elder Sign to arrive. I've heard very good things about Dungeon Run, but it looks like it got delayed to October.

Played Dungeon Run at gencon. My son & i liked it and would have bought it if it was available. You build the dungeon as you go along. If multiple players are in a room they can help or hinder each other. I played a dwarf and went my own way and ended up far from the main monster. My son played Stabbins the goblin, who went after the wizard type character early & often. He had some ability or something that he could still an item or treasure or something so he tried to use that. You have to beat the big monster to get big treasure (summoner stone which gives you extra powers when you pick it up). Going off on my own worked for me because by the time i got there the other 3 had fought and the weakened survivor was no much for a dwarf with a big magic sword.baelthazar wrote:..... Apparently there's going to be another Tangathon staring tonight at 10 pm EST, going for 48 hours. I really don't need to pick something up, but I'll probably check it out in case Imperial 2030 comes up again.

bah, no more game sales! Add me to the list of folks who've splurged lately and have to stop ASAP. After picking up Twilight Struggle and the Summoner Wars Master Set at Gencon, I happened to see someone auctioning off the FFG remake of Horus Heresy on the BGG Marketplace and took the plunge. I've been intrigued about it since demoing it at Gencon two years ago but wanted to wait for a deal.
In the meantime, I'm still curious about Earth Reborn but I need to wait a while for that one.

Jow, I have a copy of Earth Reborn that I might be able to sell you for cheaper than retail, if you are interested. It has never been played, although I really really want to, but I don't think anyone I know would play it with me. Too complex for the wife (and too WAAAR!), and too tactical for my gaming group. The unopened retail sells for anywhere from $55-$65, so, if interested, PM me with an offer. That goes for anyone here, actually. Great game, great idea, no players for me. Someone here might as well benefit.Jow wrote:bah, no more game sales! Add me to the list of folks who've splurged lately and have to stop ASAP. The last Tanga sale didn't wow me, but that was because I owned so many of the games already...

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Just wanted to post a follow up about Quarriors. My son and I still love it, and have played at least 20 games so far. All of them 2-player however as we've yet to get my wife to play along. Our first initial games had a similar random setup, mostly expensive creatures and expensive spells that didn't seem worth getting over the creatures. I was a little concerned until random chance started giving us different setups. We've had games where the big guys rarely came into play, games where spells made all the difference, and just about everything in between.
Most of the games have been close, competitive battles till the end... with a few exceptions. One game saw a lot of Growth and Portal spell usage and when the same combo came up in a later game I tried to use them the same way. My son wasn't interested however, and picked up a bunch of small creatures off the bat while I was trying to create my dice/quiddity "engine." End result was he kicked my ass 20-1... he just had too many creatures in play throughout and kept killing off the few I was able to play. Granted I had bad die rolls as well (kept rolling quiddity instead of creatures) but it was certainly an interesting game. A few games later he looked like he was going to repeat that, with a score of 19-1, but then I finally started getting more creatures in play and actually prevented him from getting his last point and came all the way back to win 20-19.

Like an addict, I added Gears of War to my Elder Sign pre-order. The reviews were all saying "Castle Ravenloft with guns, better baddie AI, and cleaner rules." YES PLEASE!

Played Citidels (which doesn't work as well with 9 when the game only supports up to 8) and Longshot, which, while it was based a lot of luck, was also a fairly close game and lots of fun.

Reading over on BGG, I just found out about Risk Express. This game looks like a perfect filler game, but it isn't available here in the US, and it appears to be out of print over in Europe as well.
It has a mechanic that looks reminiscent to Elder Sign, but it looks like a simpler, quicker game based on game play time and reports. I'm really itching to get this game now, but not willing to pay $40 plus shipping for what was probably a $12 game originally.

Risk Express was supposed to be the only good game in the line of "Express" games that Hasbro put out a few years ago and as such, was never released in the US. I made a mockup using files on BGG but haven't gotten around to testing it yet.hentzau wrote:Reading over on BGG, I just found out about Risk Express. We played the new Star Trek: Expeditions game today. A decent co- op that we all enjoyed but not as good as Pandemic in my mind. Still a keeper though.

Did you see the interesting stuff about Risk Legacy, where each game you play changes the nature of the board and the cards? I liked ST:E well enough, but don't see myself playing it a lot, and I definitely am not buying it myself. The other Star Trek game, Star Trek:Fleet Captains, will be coming out this fall. Tom Vasel of the Dice Tower has already declared ST:FC "one of the best games I've ever played." He's done literally thousands of reviews. It's definitely got him excited.edosan wrote: We played the new Star Trek: Expeditions game today. A decent co- op that we all enjoyed but not as good as Pandemic in my mind. Still a keeper though.

I'm not sure it was ever released in the US. If you look at the listing on Funagain Games and other online retailers it was always listed as an import. I think the English language version was only ever released in the UK.Defiant wrote:Actually, the express series was released in the US (eg, Battleship Express, Monopoly Express, Clue Express, etc)edosan wrote:Risk Express was supposed to be the only good game in the line of "Express" games that Hasbro put out a few years ago and as such, was never released in the US. Anyway, I'm looking at printing up my own copy right now, since the durn game is scarcer than hen's teeth right now, and if it ever gets re-printed I'll snag a copy.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Played EDH Emperor with Kenetickid and his wife, our friend Dennis, and my two older kids. My daughter and I were on the winning team each game (five games).
Played 51st State with my younger son and Dennis and Remus West, Remus won by 6 points over my son. Played two games of Dominion, one won by Remus and one by Me.
The end of the Summer! Back to school for the kids in the morning, so gaming turns sporadic. Boo.

Take a look at Battleship Express, for example, which doesn't say imported. Of course, it could be that the Risk one was different.hentzau wrote:I'm not sure it was ever released in the US.
Anyway, I'm looking at printing up my own copy right now, since the durn game is scarcer than hen's teeth right now, and if it ever gets re-printed I'll snag a copy.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
We played a 5 player game of Twilight Imperium over the last two days...so much fun that game is.
I have King of Tokyo coming tomorrow. That looks like a fun game for me and the kids. Also have the 3 Hero Expansions for Defenders of the Realm arriving tomorrow, so I am sure I will be playing quite a bit of that for the next while.
I have also bought Carcassonne for my Android phone, and I am REALLY liking it. I may pick that up (actual boardgame format) sometime soon....speaking of which, anyone know what expansions are worth getting for that series?
Chris

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
3.5 days of gaming at Tacticon 2011 in Denver!
Thursday night: Played Settlers. Yeah, I know. But this was with the Cities and Knights expansion, and was really pretty fun.
Friday: First up was Age of Conan. Was really confused the first few turns, but by the end, we'd kind of figured things out. Seemed all-right, though I'd need another play to really know.
Friday night I played a 4-player game of Through the Ages with two new players. I was cruising along, first in science and technology, but then blundered by buying a wonder which I never finished building. By the game-end, I didn't have enough actions and turns left to complete it and a Age III wonder that would have scored me Culture. Still, the game was a lot of fun.
First up on Saturday, I learned the new Civilization board game from FFG. It was good fun, and felt quit a bit like the computer game. Due to a fluke, I now own this game, as well as Ravenloft and Earth Reborn, due to a new friend's generosity in giving me a great deal. Though I liked this game, TtA is still my favorite game of this type.
I then played Twilight Struggle, teaching a new player. Going easy on him early( was the Soviets) cost me, as I was losing the Influence game by turn 7. I was forced to leave when my Saturday night Arkham Horror game began. There were 6 of us, and I drew old reliable Harvey Walters. We played with The King in Yellow, the Dark Pharaoh, and the Dunwich Horror expansions. Things were going well, and then two different players had characters devoured by a monster and an event. Then, one of those players had a second character devoured. We were still doing ok, and had three players in the Other Worlds when an environment came up that said that "Gates cannot be sealed." We plodded along for nearly two hours waiting for the environment to be replaced. Blarg. No fun. I still love the game, though.
First on Sunday, I played a game of Mansions of Madness, with four players, one being the Keeper. We did great at first, but the bored Ashcan Pete player spent too long in the basement fighting Cultists, and we slowly went insane when only two players were trying to complete the objective.
Finally, as the Con wound down, I got to play one of my most desired games: Dominant Species..what a brain-burner this one is. I really enjoyed it, but resigned myself that the game is so interlocked and dynamic that long-term planning isn't worth the effort. I'd love to play again, but doubt I'd be able to find others ready to invest the time to learn it, and play it.
Overall, an awesome weekend.

Been hearing some great things about Star Trek: Fleet Captains. It's a bit pricey at a MSRP of 99.99, but you can get it online for 69.99 on average. Tom Vassal was raving about it in a recent review and the owners of our local game shop had nothing but love for it after a demo game at Origins this year.

Based on Tom's review and his own research a friend of mine is considering picking that up.hepcat wrote:Been hearing some great things about Star Trek: Fleet Captains. It's not shipping until the 16th according to most sites, so I'll hold off until I see if the price drops a bit on release. Sometimes the pre-order pricing on games doesn't reflect the final online price. But yeah, i think I'll most likely bite.

So who wants to play a game where you spin a dreidel to knock down Nazi guards in order to liberate concentration camps?
