I was banned from Twitter for something I said back in Oct 2023. I appealed but was denied or ignored. Other than clicking on some of the links people post here, I never thought about it again. A couple of weeks ago I went to deactivate and couldn't because I was permanently suspended. The FAQ said I needed to appeal my banning which I did and was re-instated almost immediately. All I said in my defense was that I didn't violate any rules.

I have followed everyone here I could find. A search for "disarm" only led me to actual comments about disarmament.

I don't do X-Twit, but I've always been fairly prolific on FB. A lot of OOers are friends (many of them more than virtual thanks to social media). I'm probably easier to find if you know my last name, since as far as I know, my full name is unique. PM if you wish for more information.

His URL is

AT based TikTok and Instagram alternatives incoming courtesy of BlueSky?
https://techcrunch.com/2025/01/15/blues ... p-flashes/
More good news for those looking to exit Meta’s social app ecosystem in favor of a more open alternative: An independent developer is building a photo-sharing app for Bluesky called Flashes. The soon-to-launch app is powered by the same technology that underpins Bluesky, the AT Protocol, and has been built using code from the developer’s earlier Bluesky client, Skeets.
When launched, Flashes could tap into growing consumer demand for alternatives to Big Tech’s social media monopoly. This trend has led to the adoption of open source, decentralized apps like Mastodon and Bluesky, among others, including the recently launched Pixelfed mobile apps, built on ActivityPub protocol, also used by Mastodon. It’s also, in part, what’s fueling TikTok users’ shift to the Chinese app RedNote ahead of the U.S. TikTok ban — that is, U.S. users are signaling that they would rather use a foreign adversary’s app than return to Meta at this point.

This is real. Seriously. This is Zuck's best effort.

It looks like some bad straight to DVD kids animation from 2004. Plus, you in a virtual world. You can have your group in any space in the world (universe even) and you have it in a mid-tier high school gym?
This is the kind of product from a company with zero imagination wanting to spend as little money as possible to create a $500B TAM out of thin air for something that kind of already exists. But slurp it up. They feed, we eat.

I have a Meta Quest 3, but I haven't gone near Meta Worlds, mostly because when I'm in VR, I don't want to interact with random people.

I only went into one of those "random people" games one time on VR. I was sitting there minding my own business trying to figure out the controls and some kid yelled at me "OK BOOMER!!!' And......I'm out.

That's pretty much my experience from the one time I tried a 'hangout' VR program. 12-year-olds shouting memes and squealing at their cleverness. Admittedly, those apps are like the internet - you have to find the 'websites' like OO (individual rooms/groups) - or else you're just trying to have a conversation in the YouTube comment section.
I never actually bothered trying to do the legwork.

So, I viewed the video, and it has AI written all over it. The jokes and dialogue in general remind me of the AI generated Seinfeld parody on Twitch from a couple of years ago. Very stilted with the AI diving into tangents full of unfunny humour.

Yes, but this AI has access to all of your private government (and Facebook) data. It's sure to have meaningful insights into what's bothering you!

Speaking of which...
I haven't really touched my Facebook account for the past few months. I only keep it around for two sisters, one friend, and my semi-estranged son (and his family, including all three of my never-met grandchildren.)
I just got done posting that I'll be leaving the site for good, including Messenger. I made sure that those people all know where to find me. It's a blow not being able to get updates on my son and his family, but I just don't want to be a part of that ecosystem anymore.
I'm going to be leaving the post up for two or three days, then deactivating the account.

I haven't actually connected mine to FB. Rather I created a Meta account under a different email address not associated with my FB account. This being a Meta product though, it still has a tendency to recommend random strangers as friends.

I was a robust Facebook user from 2009-2020. Since then I've checked my account maybe once every six months. I have a good list of friends and relations there (although I don't know how many of them have quit or gone quiet as I have).
Now that I'm getting a divorce after 26 years of marriage, I do feel the need to reach out and contact people I know. Facebook seems like the easiest way to do that, but I really hate giving Zuck and the rest of the social media industrial complex what it wants.
So far I've been relying on individual phone calls, but my wife and I have agreed that we'll make a mutual announcement of our split on Facebook when the time is appropriate. I expect that I'll have to field a lot of replies then.

And I deactivated my account earlier today. The only reason I didn't delete it entirely is because I want the option to jump in if I need to contact one of the couple of people that I only have the ability to contact there.

How do you delete it entirely? I made a short lived account years ago, deactivated it, and those asswipes are STILL sending me notifications. Another lesson: If you for any reason start a social media account, use a throw away email address.

Isn't there a way to turn off email notifications? I believe I did so years ago, and I never receive any.

Not that I can find (gmail). I tried right clicking on an email to see if I could block, but saw nothing.

I don't have facebook, but why not just change the email address to a dummy or throwaway one?

If it's been that long, deleting it entirely would be as easy as changing the address.
