I read an article quoting him saying that if he loses he's done and won't run again.
Of course since he never lies we can be safe in knowledge of holding this as gospel.

What odds are they laying that he'd concede a loss or that the fix isn't in?

On the contrary, it means he definitely would run again.

His ego could tell him to make an excuse not to run again. One narcissist skill is to avoid arenas you will soundly lose in, instead - make excuses to stay out of the arena. That could be how Trump handles a big loss.

Undoubtedly he will try to stage a J62. The difference is Dark Brandon is in charge and will be prepared for it.

I love when angry clients start spouting politics when I’m in a position where I have to just accept it.

Angry client calls up so I give them a call back. I apologize for the background noise as I’m in the Asheville area and don’t have internet at home yet so I’m working in a public setting. Cue the rant about how it’s all the presidents fault and the VP gave all our money to immigrants and that’s why I don’t have internet.

Le sigh.

At least when my clients are ranting about the government, I know they’re likely to demand aggressive tax planning.

I have met with quite a few people who really have no idea about my personal politics or background. Some have said some truly offensive things to my face. For example, I don’t look part Chinese unless I’m wearing yellow (which never happens).

I had a crazy moral dilemma the other day at our quarterly HOA meeting.

Our current HOA is run by two friends. One of them is a completely non-serious person - he's constantly trolling people and making smart-ass comments on the FB community page. I think he's on the HOA more as a joke than anything, and we can't really stand him. The other lady is super nice, and I like her a lot, but unfortunately she's good drinking friends with the troll so she doesn't stand up to any of his nonsense.

We had one slot open on the board, and the two candidates were an ex-Marine MAGA guy with a strong financial background, or a young, inexperienced barely out of college woman.

My first instinct was, "Well of course I'm not voting for the MAGA guy." But I realized that if we elected the young college girl we'd probably have the entire neighborhood run by THREE non-serious drinking buddies in charge of the community purse strings. On the other hand, the ex-Marine wouldn't be putting up with anybody's shit, and his finance background would have him really scrutinizing the budget. He would be a powerful counter to the troll.

Ultimately, I had to vote for MAGA. I felt dirty doing it, but it was one of those cases where I needed a bigger asshole to counter a smaller asshole.

That's why I remain independent, even though I was tempted to register as a Democrat when I move. I vote blue probably 95% of the time, but every now and then the Republican candidate is objectively better. Voting for a MAGA Republican is a line I don't think I would ever cross, but I understand your reasoning, and it seems like a job that can't be adversely impacted by trumpism.

Not picking on you, but I fear you made the frog/scorpion choice here. The person without experience might have made mistakes but at least they wouldn't (presumably) have an agenda. Here, you'd vote for them with the hope they'd find their footing and do the right then when the time comes.

For so many of these MAGA lunatics they can never be relied upon to do the right thing; only the MAGA thing. And many of them are absolutely trying to get themselves into political (or pseudo-political) positions as a way to try and wrestle control away from people not politically or socially aligned with MAGA. Some of them are using these types of positions as stepping-stones to get into local politics, and then county. "I served the HOA for 3 years and managed to cut costs and maintain property value. Now I'm running for county commissioner to do the same everywhere..."

Seeing so much of this in my corner of 'merica.

Regardless, in my experience you help people that have been elected or appointed by holding them accountable. Electing a rabid animal instead always ends the same exact way.

You may very well be right, but ultimately he won overwhelmingly so my vote wasn't the deciding factor. This is one of those cases where the real "right" choice would have been to put my own hat into the ring, but I have zero interest in getting involved with HOA politics. God what a cesspool.

I wish I could do that, but I've made decisions (locally and I guess professionally) that have put me neck-deep in the seepage pit thinking I could help make things better. I'm not sure that I am (maybe a little?) but it's coming at the cost of my sanity; I'm not sure how much longer I can keep doing it so I totally get it.

You're a male in a Red area. The GOP is targeting you to try to ensure that you vote. The Dems understand that Tennessee isn't really within reach (at least not outside of local races in the bigger cities), so they're spending their money elsewhere.

Yikes. I've likened what I'm doing to spending time around a radioactive barrel of waste. It's harming me in the short and long term and I'm not entirely sure what's happening. I do think getting overt threats would have me punch out immediately. I'm already a little nervous about that locally as I've discovered I'm surrounded by really awful people, some of whom I volunteer with. If they ever connect the dots...I do have concerns.

Regardless, I can only hope we pull out of the nosedive in a few weeks and it takes the wind out of the deplorable sails for a bit. I fear the short-term outcomes are actually worse - no matter what happens.

Godspeed brother. Godspeed.

The Atlantic compares America's best president to its worst.
Washington’s character and record ensured that almost any of his successors would seem smaller by comparison. But the difference between Washington and Trump is so immense as to be unmeasurable. No president in history, not even the worst moral weaklings among them, is further from Washington than Trump.

Washington prized patience and had, as Adams put it, “the gift of silence”; Trump is ruled by his impulses and afflicted with verbal incontinence. Washington was uncomplaining; Trump whines incessantly. Washington was financially and morally incorruptible; Trump is a grifter and a crude libertine who still owes money to a woman he was found liable for sexually assaulting. Washington was a general of preternatural bravery who grieved the sacrifices of his men; Trump thinks that fallen soldiers are “losers” and “suckers.”

Washington personally took up arms to stop a rebellion against the United States; Trump encouraged one.
It's about as long as most Atlantic articles, and as satisfying to read.

Obama calls out Black men for hesitance with Harris: 'You're thinking about sitting out?

Former President Barack Obama on Thursday admonished Black men reluctant to support Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, suggesting some aren't rallying behind her because she is a woman.

To not vote for the clearly sane and right person because they are a woman but instead sit and hope the old white racist guy doesn't win and put you back decades again and again is STUPID and self defeating.

Apparently FEMA inspectors in NC are receiving death threats and the National Guard is having to run escort for them. Lots of cancelled inspections due to this. These MAGA conspiracies are severely hampering recovery. Probably as intended.

Will you please donate $15 right now?

P.S. I also really hope you can donate weekly to the MAGA Movement all the way through Election Day.

It would mean the world to me if you can afford to give weekly. If you can’t, don’t sweat it and make sure the recurring box is unchecked!

My 90 year old father got his mail in ballot this morning and promptly took it over to a drop box location in his small town in Ohio. When I asked how it went, he just said “I voted for that lady. Not Trump.”. I had to chuckle. I know for a fact his friends and many of his grand nephews and nieces would NOT like hearing that.
