I'd be happy to speak with them.

I'll lead the Torpins a little away from the others.

My name is Talon, my friends call my Doc. You will address my Talon. As a paladin of Heronious I will determine what happened here. I will ask you questions and you will answer. Speak truthfully and do not conceal anything.

So tell me what happened here.

Markus, Keviolis, and Mickal:

We were traveling to find honest work when we were attacked by those brigands

(These guys are deviating from the truth)

Torpin2, Torpin4, Torpin7:

These men were fleeing the scene of the crime, a local merchant was robbed, when we attempted to apprehend them they resisted most violently

(Perhaps not the whole story)
"Where are you off to?"
"I don't know," Snufkin replied.
The door shut again and Snufkin entered his forest, with a hundred miles of silence ahead of him.

I want to pull Markus away from the rest of the group and begin questioning him separately.

It is very obvious from your honesty and composure that you are the leader of this group of travellers. I wanted to ask you a few questions away from the others of your group so as not to disturb them too much.

What line of work are you in?
Where were you coming from, and where were you headed to?
Did they ambush you, or did they just attack you on the road?

I ask these questions one at a time, waiting politely for an answer and responding appropriately.

What line of work are you in?
We are messengers
Where were you coming from, and where were you headed to?
Headed south to Mistywood from a small village northeast of here, Rosehaven by name
Did they ambush you, or did they just attack you on the road?
They rode us down on the road and gave chase when we scattered...
"Where are you off to?"
"I don't know," Snufkin replied.
The door shut again and Snufkin entered his forest, with a hundred miles of silence ahead of him.

Given my rudimentary knowledge of this area, does this sound plausible?

What message were you carrying when these men attacked you?
Is it possible that this message is the reason you were attacked?
If you had done nothing wrong, why did you scatter when you spotted men in the livery of one of the princes?

Now that we are not fighting, I'll take a closer look at the Torpins. Do they have any special insignia on them? Are they guardsmen? Royal guards? Regular soldiers?

So you were merely upholding the law? That is very commendable. What did these ruffians steal? And isn't this more of a matter for the city guard to deal with?

Let me know if I need to make more rolls.

If either of you have appropriate Knowledge Skills use them, otherwise make INT rolls.

Also:

Sense Motive rolls.

We had no current assignment... but they came upon us quickly and attacked!

They are Regular Soldiers

We were on hand to give chase, and I am sure the city guard will be along shortly.

I tell Markus to rest and relax from the stress of the attack, then go pull Keviolis and ask him the same questions.

What line of work are you in?
We carry messages and sometimes packages, couriers
Where were you coming from, and where were you headed to?
Headed south to Mistywood from the North
Did they ambush you, or did they just attack you on the road?
They stampeded us off the road!
What message were you carrying when these men attacked you?
Is it possible that this message is the reason you were attacked?

We are not currently employed, but they accused us of thievery! When we tried to explain we had no knowledge of the crime they attacked us!

Thank you for being honest with me, friend. I have other questions for you, though.

How well do you know Markus?
How long has he been the leader of your little band of couriers?
What reason would he have to lie to someone who just saved your lives?

As usual, I wait patiently for the answers before ask the next question.

Sense Motive (if needed for these): 14+9= 23

OOC: I'm not absent from the thread, I'm just letting those better at talking do their thing. I'm not even particularly good at looking menacing. While the interrogation goes on I'm walking around keeping an eye out for anyone or anything else (with very pooor stealth skills) approaching our little encounter.

So now I'm not good at talking, huh? Thanks a lot, Coop.

Freakin' Plano people... :P

I also realized that I don't think I ever wrote up a background story for my character. He HATES injustice more than anything because of an incident as a child where he was wrongly accused and sent to jail. He was acquitted eventually, and instead of going back to the streets, he was given the opportunity to join up with the local monastary as a book keeper. He read voraciously about laws, rulings and how to work your way to the truth. He believes that truth is paramount to everything. Because of his extensive mental and physical martial arts training as well, he has an amazing ability to tell if someone is lying through body language and facial expressions (sense motive). He is also just now starting to learn that to get to the truth, one must sometimes "work with the suspect" (going to work on diplomacy and bluff skills).

We have traveled together a few times when our messenger routes coincided.

When we were at the pub discussing recent events and plans for work he suggested we come this way, so we agreed.

Lie? What is he lying about? Is this why we were attacked?

Friend, I don't know why he would lie to me. But, this makes me think he has reasons to lie to you as well. He said nothing about accusations, just that they rode down upon you and attacked without notice. Why don't you tell me your version of what happened here and we can see about clearing your name of this supposed crime

As the interrogation continues a horse can be heard walking up to the group from a distance. As the horse comes closer it is easier to tell that this horse has been breed for war and the man riding the animal is a human man with a normal build.

As the unknown rider approaches the group the man speaks out "Hail Allanon! Its me Gideon, what a surprise to meet you on this trail. It seems that you've found a bit of excitement as usual... what happened here?"

Gideon you ol' son of war. Thrown my sword in with this lot here, on our way north to see what the green skins are up to and we come upon these dogs going at each other. I followed the lead of our good friend paladin over yonder and we quickly brought an end to the scuffle, my sword even got to taste what they were made of but barely. Couple of the fellas are giving them the once over so as we can do what is proper *rolleyes*. Me I stay out of such nonsense, Johan and I are just keeping an eye out for anybody else to play with for the time being till we can get back on the road

North you say... well that does sound like a bit of action as the green skins are causing all kinds of trouble I hear. Glad to see you found some proper companions to slay those beasties with. I was pondering heading up that way myself but had no real reason to.

I guess if these men are of good standing with you then I could travel with them as well, that is if you were in need of a master of the woods such as myself. Its been to long since I've last gotten a chance to shoot at something other then what I would be eating that day. Hercules here could also use the exercise, couldn’t you boy *pats the horse*.

Speaking just loud enough to be heards

I don't see why we don't simply had over both groups to the local authorities and let them deal with it. Of course if it was up to me we could just bind them all to trees here and let mother nature decide their fates.

*Kupa hears Allanon's mutterings and smirks a bit as he walks over to where Doc is speaking with the Torpin's, not entirely gently shouldering Doc to the side.*

All right ya dogs. Doc here's been easy on ya and I'm done with it. I've sensed evil among ya and bled some of ya dry in defense of these others. I've heard ya say you expect the city guard along and I'm inclined to leave you bound here for them to deal with ya or nature if it gets to you first. Do any of you care to give me the straight story or do we leave you in the care of these other 3 you were so intent on cutting down?
